So I just happened to find this record lying around at a friends place and he didn't want it, so I figured hell, I'll take it as I'll take pretty much take any vinyl offered that is even somewhat valuable. Well I looked this record up and was like WTF!!!??

http://www.popsike.com/php/quicksearch.php?searchtext=Tool+Aenima&incldescr=&sortord=&thumbs=&currsel=&pagenum=2

Some of these are going upwards of $600-$700 for Original Prints, but there seems to be multiple ones. I am wondering how I can figure it out without opening this still sealed album. The numbers and info on the back to me match up with an original 1996 pressing by what is given on the link above. Does anyone know how to figure out for sure? Also I'll entertain any offers made through PM while I try and figure this out.

Here is a current Ebay Ad on one (open and used, asking $400): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tool-Aenima-LP-Vinyl-1996-Zoo-Entertainment-1st-Pressing-OOP-/201006109968?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item2ecce5d510

Pictures:

This is where the fun part starts. According to the manufacturing number and info it was printed in the US and it has the same numbers the original pressings do.

So does anyone know how to tell for sure between an original pressing and a reissue (both are rare, but originals are extremely valuable on Ebay).

I guess what I need to know is if this is an original pressing from 1996. If anyone can tell me how to find that out I'd greatly appreciate it.

^^
Thanks for that link, it seems the 2008 reissue reads "6 1422-31087-1 1" not "72445-11087-1" like mine does.

One released in 1996 for $250 says:

"Back bottom reads:
"The BMG and Zoo Entertainment logos are trademarks of BMG Music • ? © 1996 BMG Music • All Rights Reserved • Manufactured and Distributed by BMG Entertainment, New York, NY • Printed in U.S.A. • 72445-11087-1""

So it seems I may indeed have a sealed 1996 copy.

Perfect storm here.

Sealed copies of desirable records are rare, and depending on what it is, they're worth 2-4x a very nice opened copy.

'90s major label stuff is rare, to the point that a lot of popular catalog titles that are available for $4 in every used CD store in America pull three figures on LP.

On top of that, Tool is one of those bands with enough obsessive fans to push numbers even higher than the already silly prices a sealed '90s record fetches.

Sell it on eBay and split the profits with your friend.

I will say that all of the Aenima LP reissues are bootlegs, and they have the same catalog number as the one you have, as opposed to the ones starting with 6.

That's not to say that there isn't a legit '96 pressing with a 7... catalog number, but it's a little suspicious.

I realized that first number is the bar code number, not the number at the bottom and both the reissue and originals are the same, including mine "6 1422-31087-1 1".

Thanks for the info vinylbandit

vinylbandit, I found this site last night, http://toolvinyl.com/tool-vinyl-buyers-guide/

Quote :
"Catalog#: 61422 31087 1 and 61422 31145 1 - Pressing A (1stPressing)

It has a larger, more blurred "TOOL AENIMA" print on spine, only Zoo logo on back (no BMG logo) smaller barcode (1 ¼” L x 5/8” h), barcode is 61422-31087-1, catalog number on spine 61422-31087-1. Also a larger Zoo logo on spine(logo is ¼” diameter) (as compared to the 72445-11087-1 pressing.) The vinyl labels are significantly different as well. The back bottom reads: "The Zoo Entertainment logo is a trademark of Volcano Entertainment. • ? © 1996 Volcano Entertainment LLC 1540 Broadway New York, NY 10036 • Warning All Rights reserved • Unauthorized Duplication Is A Violation OF Applicable Laws • Manufactured and Distributed by BMG Entertainment, New York, NY • Printed in U.S.A. • 61422-31087-1", Has Tool Aenima sticker front top left of shrink wrap, Has Parental Advisory Sticker on bottom right of front sleeve, Shrink wrap sealed from front top to bottom center of back sleeve side, Some copies have cut-out indicating promotional copy.

Catalog#: 72445 11087 1 - Pressing B (2nd Pressing)

Release has four black labeled sides, other than the runoutgrooves there are no side indications. Side A ends in a locked groove. This jacket has smaller "TOOL AENIMA" (the logo is 1 1/4"” long) and "Zoo" (13/8” L x 7/8” h) logos. Its barcode is larger and has a VERY faint catalog number on the bottom of the spine (it may be hard to see.) Back bottom reads: "The BMG and Zoo Entertainment logos are trademarks of BMG Music • ? © 1996 BMG Music • All Rights Reserved • Manufactured and Distributed by BMG Entertainment, New York, NY • Printed in U.S.A. • 72445-11087-1", Catalog number on bottom spine 72445 11087 1, Large barcode (13/8” L x 7/8” h), Vinyl -has four black labeled sides, other than the run out grooves there are no side indications. - All vinyl have 72445-11087-1-A1 REI on them, Has Tool Aenima sticker front bottom center of shrink wrap, Has Parental Advisory Sticker on bottom right of front sleeve, Shrink wrap sealed from front top to bottom center of back sleeve side, Some sealed copies have over barcode sticker – 614224 11441, Comes with printed inner sleeves"

I guess I have a 2nd Pressing then? Two things missing though, mine is not "72445-11087-1-A1 REI" and it also doesn't have the Parental Advisory Sticker. I'd like to figure out if I have a legit or bootleg without opening the thing.

It sounds like due to the huge number of bootlegs that the 2nd pressing is easily worth $200:

Quote :
"The 2 official pressings are essentially identical, gatefold jacket, printed inners, black vinyl, ornate grayish center-label. On eBay, they range anywhere from $150 to $400."

It is in fact a Bootleg copy and average value is $50-$70. They could tell based on where the seal is made at, the originals are on the back (about half way down). Oh well, still a cool find though.

Eh, so it's not a payday, but agreed still a cool find. If you could get 50-70 that's not exactly peanuts, or just enjoy it as part of your collectio
