What's the problem with that? That's a smooth soft way down, heck, a shortcut to the road down there if that's where he wanted to go. I use close call when there could have been potential nontrivial damage to the car or the person.

^imagine that car traveling at ~35mph as it crosses the peak of that slope, into oncoming traffic below - that's enough for me to categorize that as a close call

Having worked at a firehouse that responds to a portion of the beltline for the past 7 years this does not surprise me. People have become absolutely out of control while driving. Obviously I contribute it to the engagement of cell phones. It's pathetic how disengaged people have become while driving. The number of vehicle crashes we respond to have tripled in just the past 5 years. [/rant]

Surely there can't be any real data to support that...

The citywide run reports don't lie. It's gotten so bad with drivers not paying attention that it's protocol for us to close down lanes even if the crash scene isn't in those lanes just to get cars slowed down. Pay attention next crash you see on the beltline or interstate. You'll see 2 fire trucks. One is there as a "blocker" i.e. put in place for cars to plow into in advance of the crash scene. The personnel will get out of the fire truck and stand on the side of the road to stay safe. The other fire truck is protecting the crash scene while the personnel is attending patients.

In fact, try this: stop your car on the side of an interstate and stand next to it. See how long you can stand there. LOL.

I saw that on my way to work yesterday, I laughed out loud....

Stupid drivers!

ironically there always seems to be something odd at that intersection, from a stuck car to a bobcat with a thrown track..

^^i guess you could contact the office of the fire marshal for them or you could wait until they're released for '13 and i'll post them as long as they're public information. not sure why they wouldn't be.
