I'm selling my RX-7. I rebuilt the engine last winter (15,000 miles ago) and replaced 2 of the 3 plates and all seals, o-rings, and gaskets. I also replaced the radiator at the same time and installed a fuel cut-off switch in the steering column. The car runs great, no oil leaks and no carbon build-up on the seals, but it's too small for my new job and doesn't get nearly the gas mileage I need. It has the boxes in the back instead of seats (not that the seats were ever big enough for a normal sized person) and the radio has been replaced with an aftermarket one. It passed inspection just fine last year, no accidents, and the oil-drip system was turned off to allow for pre-mixing 2-cycle oil into the gas. There are no back speakers (I have them, just never installed them) and the shocks that hold the hatch open are worn out (but I have the replacements and installing them is easy just requires 2 people).

Fuel cutoff switch in the dash? Mixing 2-cycle oil into the gas?

This is quite common. 1/14/2014 5:49:23 PM |

Rotaries consume a little oil by design.
I'm guess the fuel cutoff is to alleviate flooding issues.
What I'm confused by is what 2 "plates" were replaced in the engine?1/14/2014 8:57:08 PM |

The engine has 3 plates (front, center, back) and a chamber with a rotor between each plate. Two of the plates were replaced during this rebuild with the better ones from the '91 engine. 1/14/2014 9:20:50 PM |

The oil is to keep the apex seals in the rotor housing lubricated. The oil squirters can fail or gum up, causing these seals to fail prematurely which results in an manditory engine rebuild. As a solution to this, you simply premix oil and fuel every time you get gas. 1/14/2014 9:48:55 PM |

apex seals are the weak link to the reliability issue, but aside from the that, the design is pretty solid.

What kind of gas mileage do you get, Dr. Ro? 1/16/2014 12:00:11 AM |

Good luck with the sale! I will have my '93 FD for sale shortly once it's fixed and finished. 1/17/2014 1:51:42 AM |

Gas mileage? It's a sports car. The average is somewhere around 19mpg. It accelerates very quickly and could be a great drifting car with the right suspension upgrades, but the gas mileage isn't great. 1/17/2014 6:44:19 AM |

19mpg seems high for an '88 RX-7 1/17/2014 7:39:13 AM |

There are no cylinders in a rotary engine. It has 2 rotors for a total of 6 chambers (1.3L) and has something like 150-160 HP. Most of the engine is a '91 and it was just rebuilt 15k miles ago. Most of my driving was on the highway while I was using it, so the mileage estimate may be a bit high. 1/17/2014 7:06:30 PM |

If I ever blow the engine in my Locost 7, I want to put a bridgeported to hell 13b in it (I don't think an LS1/T 56 would fit unless you built the car around it from the beginning.) 1/17/2014 11:53:55 PM |

I know that you can put a sbc in it. I've seen it, but I don't know what work was done to do it.
a 3 rotor would be epic. 1/18/2014 6:51:57 PM |

Please youtube how a rotary engine works. : ) Then you will understand how this engine does not have any cylinders.1/19/2014 7:19:50 PM |

You can if you build it for that from the ground up. I don't think the engine or transmission would fit as it is now. 1/20/2014 9:50:20 AM |

Hey Ro, how about some more photos. Perhaps from the rear and interior, as well as under the hood.
