New endurance race format offered by TrackDaze

Quote :
"What is RaceDaze?

RaceDaze is our vision of how to simplify Amateur Road Racing. First, forget complicated points systems, classing, and arbitrary vehicle values. We believe that by taking the tried and true “Run What You Brung” element of bracket racing and combining it with a reasoned, calculated, and scientific approach to leveling the various performance capabilities of vehicles we achieved our goal. In RaceDaze Endurance Events, what matters most is Consistency and Preparation, while still rewarding speed and skill.

How does it work?

Form your team, pick your racecar, and register for the event. At the event, use your qualifying session to determine your “dial-in” time. From that dial-in time and based on the overall lap times of the entire field, RaceDaze’s proprietary calculation will determine the starting order and handicap for each team. That’s it. No vehicle value, no themes, no performance limitations. Race what you want, how you want. Let your teams' speed, skill, consistency, and preparation separate you from the competition.

The Cars.

What’s eligible? Any properly caged and log booked racecar. Any class, any power, any tire… Corvettes to Miatas, Porsches to VWs, BMWs to Hondas…

The Drivers

Who’s eligible? Any RaceDaze, NASA, SCCA, ChumpCar, 24 Hours of Lemons, or other nationally recognized licensed racer with prior wheel to wheel racing road-racing experience. All drivers must submit an application with accompanying driving resume or current license credentials for a RaceDaze Competition License. Advanced Level HPDE and Time Trial Drivers without prior wheel-to-wheel experience are eligible for a license after successfully completing the RaceDaze Pre-Comp School.

The Prizes.

Real prize money. Purses for overall victory and class winners. We’re not talking nickels or dimes, plaques, or cheap champagne

Save the Date
When: July 5th-6th
Where: Summit Point Raceway
What: 9 hour Endurance Race

Registration opens March 1st!

No way I would be able to do an event like this in 2014, but the format piqued my interest. What do you guys think?

Sounds like a wonderful idea, but I'm concerned about the feasibility of so many different types of cars on the same track. What happens when a 911 GT3 gets sideswiped by a Chevrolet Corsica LeMons car going into Turn 8? It's a racing incident - in Chump or LeMons, people will shake hands, exchange a beer and laugh about it. But will the 911 GT3 with $20,000 in damages be happy with that result?

Even a less extreme example - is it really safe to put a twin turbo 300ZX or C5 Corvette with track suspension on the same race course as a bunch of 140 HP hatchbacks and similar that have been built on a Chump/LeMons $500 budget? We already have retarded speed differentials in Chump that lead to 40+ MPH closing speeds because of different people interpreting rules differently and frankly, that's dangerous without a full field of battle-hardened endurance racers. You never know if the guy in front of you really knows the limit of his brakes or even if it's the same guy who was in that car the last time you passed him.

Again, I love the idea.. sounds like a wonderful system, but I wouldn't enter a car until I see how the races go. Especially not a nice car!

Note: I've been racing in ChumpCar for 3 years with a team that fields two cars.

i'd love for this to be a non-endurance race format. exact same rules, just 30 laps or something

^ why not just do 30 laps and call it a day? Having more time just gives you the option of running longer if you want.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

how would you keep drivers from sandbagging their dial-in time to get an unfair handicap? This format works for drag racing, because it's easy to spot someone not running full throttle. Identifying someone running incorrect lines or partial throttle during a road race would be a lot harder to differentiate from someone getting comfortable with the track as the day progresses.

^^ it sounds like the scoring is heavily based on consistency. If you are all of a sudden running faster than your qualifying speed then you don't do as well as you would matching your qualifying speed. Would be smart to run a little bit slow if you are in a fast car, to account for having to slow down to safely pass. I would hope that drivers in fast cars would handle them responsibly, knowing that there are slow cars on the track.

It does seem like a recipe for disaster though. Why don't they match similar lap time cars together in groups? hmm...

If it was a shorter timed race I'd be interested. Like maybe heats of 30 minutes to an hour with different groups running. If you run a fast car you will do more laps and burn more consumables. If you run something more pedestrian you can go out and have a fun day on a budget and without destroying too much shit.
