A consortium of local governments and universities also are planning a North Carolina Next Generation Network to cover the Triangle as well as parts of the Triad. The North Carolina Research and Education Network already operates a fiber-based network across the state, but it is for non-business use. MCNC, which is based in RTP, operates the network. However, private firms can lease unused fiber that is part of NCREN. RTI Fiber is one of NCREN's customers. RST plans to offer a variety of services over the network in addition to high-speed Internet. Other services that can be supported over the latest version of Internet protocol technology will include: uncompressed 4K television VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) online education telemedicine HD video security/surveillance a la carte movies and programming Video and TV services are expected to be added by the end of the second quarter, according to RST. Limerick launched the company along with Doug Brown and Randy Revels. All are natives of Cleveland County, where Shelby is located. "

I called and talked to a sales rep. It isn't available residentially yet, but they hope to offer it by Q4.

This is what happens when marketing language goes full retard.

Internet of Everything is Cisco's made up language for the more commonly used "Internet of Things," which is about connecting anything and everything to the network (whether private or Internet). What RST built is a really fast infrastructure, which is awesome, but has nothing to do with the Internet of Everything other than being yet another transit segment.

Unless you are a business and want to pay for a fiber line, they are not Google and giving you a actual fiber. They want to do wireless "last mile".

So you highly will not get gig fiber to your home.

Really all they did was build a statewide fiber backbone. And want to offer last mile service, but not as fiber for most places.

That said, if they plan to offer "gigabit speeds" as the article states, I wouldn't care much if the layer 1 is fiber, copper, or RF, as long as I got reliable, consistent service. especially if my alternatives are crime warner and uverse.

Not really. They are using MCNC fiber for their longhaul. RST didn't physically build all of their fiber network.

^^Actually they are just leasing off of MCNC. MCNC has been building it out. They are simply renting that and reselling it. Not holding my breath on these guys, but any competition is fine by me.

I tried to inquire about leasing fiber off MCNC back when they were still doing construction. Talk about a clusterfuck of of a cagey industry.

No one wants to tell you anything about who owns what or where because of all the agreements and peering and reselling.

Granted I didn't really know as much as I thought I did, but I did research and was like ok so there's fiber buried like 5 feet from my building and I want it. PS: it's not that easy.

The articles were a little hazy in the details... Some sounded like fiber to the home, others sounded like it was aneighborhood fiber node withe wireless build out.. But it comes down to options.

Example: crime warners pricing in Wilson, nc is pretty low because of competition from greenlight, Wilson's muni fiber.

Yea I never looked at the exact path of the fiber, but after your post I wanted to check it out. After checking their Google Maps file, I found that MCNC has fiber running right beside my apartment complex. Same goes for one coworker who lives in Chapel Hill and another in Durham. Too bad we can't buy network service from them directly. Maybe that is a good sign for getting connected when RSL starts service.

I doubt google will run away. They want to run FTH, too.

I think google is interested in this market for what it is: a highly educated area with boom tech industry. They want in.

Also, if rst runs fiber the neighborhoods to suit their wireless nodes... Google may just buy them. See: provo. Then either do FTH, or adopt the wireless model as a new implementation strategy for google fiber, enabling them to research better/faster ways to deploy in other cities.

North State Communications in High Point/Greensboro. 80/30 for $45/month (for the 1st year, $55/month 2nd year, $65/month 3rd year). Their base speed is 30/30 for ~$35/month. Also supposedly releasing gigabit fiber by the end of this year to their fiber customers:

With my TWC bill perpetually spiraling out of control and a flyer hung on my doorknob for North State, I decided to look into them. They're a local ISP for the High Point area, with a few outlying communities and part of the southern tip of Greensboro. The customer service rep was very nice, not pushy at all, didn't try to up-sell me. I signed up for their service and they came by to install it a few days later. They already had fiber running on my street so they just ran a fiber line to a junction box they installed at my house, and then ran a fiber line directly to my living room.

I've only had them for about a month so far, but no issues at all. Very fast.
