In 1997, the Hartford Whalers move to Raleigh and become the Carolina Hurricanes.

That same year, the Binghamton Rangers (previously the Binghamton Whalers), move to Hartford and become the Hartford Wolf Pack (apparently named after a class of submarines, but strangely similar to Raleigh's NC State Wolfpack). The Hartford Wolf Pack serves as a minor-league farm team for the New York Rangers.

In 2010, the New York Rangers secondary farm team, the Charlotte Checkers, becomes the primary farm team of the Carolina Hurricanes (formerly Hartford Whalers).

That year, the Hartford Wolf Pack change their name to the Connecticut Whale. The name did not last and has since been changed back to Wolf Pack.

Moral of the story, screw Hartford and all of Connecticut.

Technically, the Carolina Hurricanes played their first two seasons in Greensboro not Raleigh. When the Whalers moved down to NC, the Raleigh Entertainment & Sports Arena wasn't going to be finished for 2 years.

Fun fact: when the Hurricanes moved to Greensboro, they displaced the AHL's Carolina Monarchs who were moved to Connecticut and became the Beast of New Haven only to dissolve two seasons later.
