The 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will be the 101st edition of the oldest ongoing competition in American soccer. The 2014 field of teams is the largest ever, with 80 teams over 8 different leagues. Every game is single elimination, which brings a lot of intensity to every minute of every match.

Tonight starts the 3rd round of the US Open Cup, where 2nd division teams (NASL teams) begin playing. In the 4th round, MLS teams will join their tournament.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Lamar_Hunt_U.S._Open_Cup for all 3rd round match ups.

If you want to follow the Triangle's local team, the Railhawks play at 7pm tonight:
Charlotte Eagles @ Carolina Railhawks at WakeMed Soccer Park
(Winner will host Chivas USA)

they've got nothing on the Fresno Fuego!

(to be serious, I think a tournament like this would be excellent in hockey or baseball)

Gameday!!

Carolina Railhawks host Chivas USA tonight at 8pm

Be Bold! Be Orange! Go Railhawks!

FYI: Over the past 3 seasons, the Railhawks have defeated Vancouver Whitecaps, Chivas USA, LA Galaxy (twice), and have lost to Real Salt Lake, Chivas USA, and Vancouver Whitecaps. With a 4-3 record vs MLS teams over the past three years, they have shown they can hang with the big boys.

^typically B+ teams. For example LA Galaxy is yet to bring Landon Donovan, Beckham, or Kean, but everyone else yes, including Robbie Rogers last year. Chivas USA did not bring Bocanegra last night, but they have brought Juan Agudelo before. It's pretty much all starters minus their top 2-3 stars due to long travel.

Gameday!!

Carolina Railhawks vs LA Galaxy
at 7pm in Cary, NC

Word on the street is that Landon & Keane are both going to play. Landon was quoted as saying that they are tired of losing to Carolina, and will make the trip this time.

SUUUUUUCKS that the Railhawks chose this week out of all weeks to re-sod their stadium's field. This means that the most important game of their club's history is going to be played on the practice field. Last two matchups vs LA have had 8000-9000 fans in attendence, but the practice field seating can only support 3000 max. Tuesday evening game on a practice field?!?!? WTF indeed!

Anyways, Go Railhawks!!

Well done, Landon. Had to take your lazy ass to Cambodia. Now, instead of playing in front of 70,000 in the most popular event in the world, you're on a rec field playing the Mudcats.

Semifinals Pairings:

Winner of New England Revolution @ Philadelphia Union
@
Winner of FC Dallas @ Carolina Railhawks
---
Winner of Chicago Fire @ Atlanta Silverbacks
@
Winner of Portland Timbers @ Seattle Sounders

The coin-flip has been kind to the Railhawks this tournament. IF the Railhawks beat FC Dallas, they would host their Simifinals matchup. That would make it 5 rounds in a row. The odds: (50%)^5 = 3.125% chance of winning a coin-flip 5 times in a row, crazy.
