Best idea ever!!!

Unless you are in the Soda (fat juice) industry I don't see why one would be against this, even the most die-hard heart bleeding liberal.

yes and this goes with the same justification that those on welfare should take drug tests.

I have no problem with people smoking pot. Though if you are on welfare you should not be buying pot with your money.

But soda is one of the cheapest foods you can buy per calorie. We should ban people from foodstamps if they don't buy soda, because clearly they are not being thrifty. Why should the taxpayers be buying these people premium foods?

but not long ago Fox News et al were attacking food stamp recipients who bought fish and other seafood. Those foods are very healthy, if food stamp recipients are only allowed to be healthy food then why were they being criticized for buying seafood?

we have an economic impact and healthcare costs due to sugary drinks not just from food stamp recipients, really we should tax them for everyone or ban them from everyone instead of sticking it to the poors

I don't get that. If they spend there money on seafood and run out early, tough shit. Better seafood than fucking twinkies, candy bars, and soda.

What about diet soda? It's zero calories. And if you're going to ban sugary soda, why stop there? OJ and most other juices you get at the grocery store are sugar laden. Poor people shouldn't even be able to buy bottled water since they can drink from the tap and plastic bottles are bad for the environment. I say they shouldn't be able to buy anything to drink period.

I do not support the government regulating any kind of food for anybody to buy.

the problem with saying "you shouldn't buy/do x if you're on welfare" is that it stems from the belief that people are only on welfare because they're lazy

which is really dumb

The purpose of food stamps is to give folks in need money for subsistence. Soda is not subsistence. I'd argue Diet Sodas should be included too. Soda is a luxury not a staple. If you require food stamps to feed your family than you should be thrifty enough to drink water.

We could reverse your argument and say why not let folks on food stamps purchase beer....
If we are going to allow soda that provides no nutritional values than why not let people get alcohol.

you're going to have to include cookies, chips, snacks, frozen foods high in fat calories, etc. Really, what you want is just veggies since they have no fat and minimal calories, although corn and potatoes aren't good for you, so nix those as well. The point here should be to remind people how poor they are and that they shouldn't be allowed 'luxury' items like soda, snacks, meat (it's expensive!), etc. These people are getting handouts from Uncle Sam, so they shouldn't get anything extra. It'll just spoil them and make them even lazier.

What does "its a luxury" even mean? It's not up to you to decide what is and isn't a luxury. We give poor people money for sustenance. That includes vices such as soda and beer.

really, food stamps should be vouchers for gruel. The entitlement needs to stop and nothing more than basic sustenance should be provided for these lazy leeches. I'd say just bread and water, but bread is nothing but carbs and obesity/diabetes are at an all time high.

actually, we should hand out packs of cigarettes with the gruel vouchers while we are at it. poor people don't work and just sit around all day, so they need something to keep them busy. it would also kill about a 1/3 of them off. sure it'll take decades, but poor people tend to just stay poor anyway.

my point is, with that many people, you're bound to get complaints about nearly every food/drink/need possible, so it's pointless to think that your opinion about what can and can't be bought is pointless

This may be a dumb question, because I don't keep up with such programs.... but don't "food stamps" already have stipulations - on what can be purchased and where it can be purchased?

I'm open to a fat tax.

I really didn't think so many people would be in support of food stamp dollars being used for soda.

I have no problem with foodstamps but there is already a precedent for inhibiting the purchase of certain items like
alcohol. One could argue that juice while also high in calories and sugar at least has vitamins and nutrients.

Soda has no nutritional value thus I do not consider it a food item.

i think it's funny how people complain all the time about a nanny state, but then turn around and think it's OK to try to control and punish poor people. again, this sub-humanization of poor people is really sickening.

I wonder if HUR has ever stopped to think about how humiliating it must be to actually use food stamps. There are labels all over the grocery store in CA saying what qualifies as WIC. It's usually the cheap shit like a block of generic colby jack cheese, not expensive aged parmesan that people end up getting. If you've ever stood behind one of these people in line, you can see the shame in their eyes about having to use their card. And normally what's in the shopping cart is bare bones basics.

A personal anecdote - the person that was in front of me wasn't shamed at all. Rather profane though, talking to her cousin on her iPhone 5.

It might be. Universal basic income could work.

We shouldn't be micromanaging how people spend their food stamps. Research has shown that aid generally works better when given with fewer caveats. Poverty isnt a character flAw (especially in our country where we're getting poorer despite working harder) .

I can't believe anyone would support these measures. But then again, I was watching cspan where chuck grass key and Harry Reid were trying to talk about campaign finance, and they were both crochety, demented, rambling old men. Reid kept calling the person he was taling to Mr President, and they weren't a president . He apologized and still kept doings it. It's unfathomable these Geriatrics are running the country. Its no wonder our government is the way it is when you see this .

seriously, just read 1 academic article about this. Don't be emotional.

here's a wild idea: how about instead of trying to pass legislation to make sure poor people don't have access to soda, why aren't we doing more to educate them and empower them with nutritional and financial wisdom? isn't it more rewarding and satisfying to teach people how to help themselves, as opposed to punishing them? WWJD or something?

the price of luxuries and electronics are falling while the price of essentials (food, housing, etc...) are radically rising. There was a good article not long ago titled "why poor people can afford things but not important things" or something like that but I can't find it. its really not that hard to afford a smart phone, you can do that with a minimum wage job, but you still can't come close to affording everything else. the cost of that smartphone isn't enough to make a difference in relation to the cost of everything else.

this is obvious if you think about it

^^ and ensire minimum wages that keep pace with inflation so that each new generation isn't poorer than the last. And ensure kids have access to training. And factor in financial assistance for job losses from mechanization.
