When I stayed here a few years back this place seemed pretty cool. It had that vintage feel like you were going to the beach in the 80's with your parents, but it was clean and fresh despite the old bones. Plus it seemed cheap at the time. I enjoyed it.

eh, i've learned to take TA reviews with a large grain of salt. Most of those people go out of their way to find stuff to nitpick and bitch about. and they're probably terrible people to vacation with in general. 6/13/2014 10:57:53 AM |

^ yeah i ignore the nitpicky people, but when 3 different people in the last 6 months say the carpets are nasty (eg) i tend to give them a little credence. 6/13/2014 11:00:18 AM |

Yeah, out of curiosity I checked the one I recommended. At first glance it looks pretty good with 4 out of 5 stars. 59 out of 80 reviewers said it was either "Excellent" or "Very Good" which isn't bad for an inexpensive beachfront hotel. The most recent reviews, however, don't paint the best picture of the place. 6/13/2014 11:52:52 AM |

I try to just skip the 5 star reviews since I don't trust them. I mean I'm sure most are legit, but especially for these smaller places, they can be suspect. 6/13/2014 3:09:22 PM |

Hatteras, you say? http://innonpamlicosound.com/ It's soundfront rather than oceanfront, so you'll have to get in the car to go to the beach. But it's a short drive (~5 minutes) to the accesses by the lighthouse. And the inn itself is beautiful, porches overlooking the sound, fantastic restaurant on site, just a really nice place. My wife and I stayed there in May for part of our anniversary trip and we'd definitely return.
For Nags Head/KDH/Kitty Hawk we like the Surf Side Hotel for beachfront. Nice facility, nice rooms. We've also stayed at Shutters on the Banks and had a good experience, though it was off season. And the Cypress House Inn is where we had our wedding reception--it's across the road from the beach, but directly across from an access. Beautiful old house and the innkeepers are amazing people.
It's been years since I've stayed at Wrightsville but the Blockade Runner was pretty nice back then. Not sure if they've kept up their game or not (stayed there late 90's.) 6/16/2014 7:17:10 AM |

I stayed at the Blockade Runner recently for a wedding, some of the rooms have been updated and are nice and the lobby and grounds are attractive. We got a group rate that was competitive with other hotels (which is why we stayed at the host hotel), but I think it was pretty pricey if you paid full fare. I would recommend it, we enjoyed our stay and the staff was very good. It has up to date contemporary styling but still makes you feel nostalgic. 6/16/2014 7:57:25 AM |

Just got back from Topsail, ended up at the Island Inn. Great little motel right across the street from the beach. Paid $100-$130/night.

Went to a couple restaurants and it seems most on the island are wildly overpriced for the quality of food you get. Drove 20 minutes north to Sneed's Ferry and ate at a "local" place called Riverview Cafe. Lower prices and much better food.
Next time I'm going to be sure to get an efficiency so I can just cook my own seafood. If I go to Topsail again I might try this place - http://www.seavistamotel.com/] 6/23/2014 9:29:15 AM |

ate at Daddy Macs, rated as one of the best restaurants on the island. The view is nice, but the food was blah for me. house salad was $7 and mostly just iceberg. i don't know how you screw up mashed potatoes, but they were crap, as was the canned gravy. mahi was ok but overcooked.
had dinner one night at the thai grille and that was some pretty good food, but off the island. considered sear's landing but was scared off by reviews of overpriced food.
had a couple brunches at the New York Corner Deli. very good food at decent prices.
want to give the Crab Pot a shot next time...have you ever been there? Reviews are a trainwreck but I like dives.
drank at Buddy's Crab House some. they also have a nice deck overlooking the ocean. would probably try eating there.] 6/23/2014 12:00:09 PM |

I ate at a fried seafood and hushpuppy kind of place several years ago, I'm not sure if it was the Crab Pot, but it was literally a shack, had all kinds of pieces of flair on the walls.

That was probably it...can't miss it coming into town. Right at the main intersection most would go through to come into or leave town. I stopped at the nearly seafood market on the way out of town. 6/23/2014 12:31:10 PM |

The Seahawk in Atlantic Beach that Skack recommended is a total piece of shit, but it's cheap, oceanfront, and has a pretty cool courtyard. I stay there when I'm in the area for work because it's the only oceanfront place cheap enough for me to expense. 6/23/2014 12:33:52 PM |

my buddy's family has a house on Topsail. Their favorite place is Sears Landing, but we didn't eat there over Memorial Day Weekend.
We did eat at Mainsail, which was pretty good overall. I would recommend it to others visiting.
and then we ate at Bay Breez' and all i have to say is that it was one of the worst dining experiences i've ever had. Service and food were all an absolute F. If you go back, avoid this place at all costs. 6/23/2014 1:23:00 PM |

It's been a couple years since I've been to Topsail, but Crap Pot was definitely tasty when I went and you could tell what we had was pretty fresh (which makes sense because there is a fishmonger right behind the restaurant) 6/23/2014 2:19:52 PM |

My step-mother-in-law and sister-in-law have stayed here and they really like it. Nothing spectacular, but it's really quaint and a good bang for your buck.
I had the same issue at Daddy Mac's when I went last month. Awesome view and great service, but the food was far from something special. I had a shrimp po'boy and the shrimp and seasoning were really good but they put it on a weirdly folded hoagie bun. Another person in our party had the grilled mahi sandwich and it was super dry, we actually thought it was a chicken breast at first.
I have the same opinion of Sear's Landing. Awesome view if you sit outside, good drink specials and friendly bartender but the actually seafood wasn't that good. Shrimp tasted as if they were cooked earlier in the day and warmed up. For someone who doesn't eat a lot of seafood, it's probably good to them.
I like Camino Real in Surf City if you're feeling like eating tasty Mexican. Max's Pizza is also pretty good...looks kinda drabby inside but they have really good subs.
And like everyone else said, if you want good seafood....go to Something Fishy. You will not be disappointed. Their hushpuppies and honey spread are like crack.

Yeah I wonder how fresh and local the seafood is at these types of restaurants. They always serve the same fish on the menu, never a catch of the day or anything like that. The Mahi I had sure as hell didn't taste fresh...perhaps they overcook it and overseaon it to attempt to cover up the fact that it's not fresh. I figure if you have fresh fish you're going to lightly season it to show off the flavor of the fish.6/24/2014 12:15:36 AM |

On Hatteras Island. They have a bunch separate cottages and houses right on the beach, some with kitchens. But the prices are really reasonable considering the location and the privacy you get having your own dwelling.
