"The Cold War aerial games of chicken portrayed in the movie "Top Gun" are happening in real life again nearly 30 years later.

A U.S. Air Force spy plane evaded an encounter with the Russian military on July 18, just a day after Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was downed by a suspected surface-to-air missile that Ukraine and the West allege was fired by pro-Russia rebels in eastern Ukraine.

The RC-135 Rivet Joint fled into nearby Swedish airspace without that country's permission, a U.S. military official told CNN. The airplane may have gone through other countries' airspace as well, though it's not clear if it had permission to do so
"

I wonder how Faux News is going to spin the story and how many war-hawk politicians will be saber rattling about this situation.

We were spying on Russian troops on Russia's front door step. What if Russia sent a spy plane to cruise over Mexico to take a closer gander at US troop operations.

[Edited on August 4, 2014 at 3:20 PM. Reason : we even let them use an air force base for service]

If you read the treaty a member state can not simply roll out its spy plane to do reconnaissance on another member at-will.

Ummmm...so? We'd prob put Mexico's nuts in a vise, but what beef would we have with Russia? Same thing if they were in international airspace. You might wish they weren't there, but it's just a fact of life.
