ISIS, I think, largely doesn't give a shit about America so much as they're concerned with their regional Islamic caliphate. I mean, sure, I'm sure they hate America, but that's a peripheral issue.

Of course, this was a primary driving factor for bin Laden, and I believe that aside from desiring to kill Americans just for the sake of doing it, and aside from a personal vendetta because we were making his life hell after the Cole, embassy attacks, first WTC bombing, etc, I think that 9/11 had a lot to do with him desiring to prod the U.S. into overreacting militarily, uniting and reinvigorating much of the Islamic world.

(then, of course, we picked fucking Iraq, too, rattling that hornet's nest, removing the counterweight to our more important Iran problem, and creating a power vacuum and militant Islamist problem where there wasn't one, and diverting resources and political capital so that we had a weaker hand when Syria went down.)

ISIS isn't bolstered by the West in maybe quite the same direct way as the Taliban were born of our Mujahideen (although we're working on that with our arming rebels in Syria, I'm afraid--although Assad isn't exactly a compelling option, either), but ISIS is very much a product of the environment that we have created over the last decade.

I'm sure you realize the reason christians get flack in america is because they are the dominant andvocal religion in america. Well, ISIS is actually a nightmare scenario for them as well. Last thing they want is a bloodthirsty, Sunni extremists massacring Shia and toppling the semi-friendly Iraqi government. I seriously doubt anyone at the FBI is losing sleep over ISIS. They are a regional problem, and are probably seen more as potential leverage by the Obama administration than anything else. All the regional powers want them gone but the none of them will do it themselves. Using them to force a secular Iraqi government, or concessions from Syria and Iran, before providing real front-line military aid seems like the way to go.

^^ It is very dangerous to underestimate them. They swept through major iraqi cities in a matter of days, and defeated both Kurdish an Iraqi forces. They now have possession of American weapons, and probably are well funded. And they seem to be more brutal than most.

I'm not worried about an attack on America's mainland, but this is in the realm of possibility down the road if they aren't stamped out now, as decisively as possible.
