Good to hear that. I know Tahoe has had a horrible season. I'm skiing in the trees by October / early November and take that for granted.

Yeah it's been pretty rough the last few years. It was pretty bad last month, almost east coast conditions. Back into the 60s this week as well. I'll probably be going out to Utah for the first time next year instead.

Yeah I was reading this article a while back. I think this was one of them:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/08/opinion/sunday/the-end-of-snow.html

All about the impacts of global warming on the ski industry. Lower elevation places like Tahoe are going to be hit really hard in coming decades. Luckily Colorado has the highest elevation ski resorts in the country.

Tahoe I believe is on its 4th consecutive bad season.

Yeah Tahoe bad means shit doesn't open. Colorado bad means all runs and lifts are open but there's not a lot of fresh pow.

One of the best if not the best powder days I've had this year. Winter Park got 16" inches at the base over 24 hours this past weekend:

I only got ~20 days of skiing in this season. Hoping for at least another 4-5 this season. A Basin will hopefully stay open through May.

Oh well...I picked up diving this summer, so that ill get my kicks from that until the water gets too cold.

Lived on the coast my whole life and just now got into it. I guess that would be like living in Colorado your whole life and waiting until you get in your 30s to start skiing

Hoping to ski Whitefish this year and I'll definitely get a lot more snowmobiling in

Yeah I'm hoping we have a better year than last year. Most bases were under 100 inches.

Most of the predictions for Colorado I'm reading are good though. At least better than last year. The 2016 / 2017 season is supposed to be even better though.

Haha that's funny. I thought it was a static jpg. They clear that meter every day at 3pm so I guess the jpg get's updated then. The one I posted earlier was past 8 inches. So I guess it snowed a bit more sense then.

can't figure out how to post the video, but looks like they're already getting some good runs in at Targhee:

the Tetons are off to a great start and Targhee hoping for the 7th straight season without having to turn on the snow makers

Nice. Late season start though. The 20th? I need to make it down to Wolf Creek. They got almost 30 inches in the last few days.

nah, 20th is about right. they want to make sure conditions are great first so nobody's disappointed

unlike certain resorts that choose to make their snow

Yeah yeah we all know Wyoming gets more snow.

I can however drive to 8-10+ resorts in under 2 hours. Wyoming has what 8 total ski resorts that are spread across the state?

I sure can. although we may have different definitions of "resort"

Bozeman is 3 hrs, SLC is 2.5 hours, Jackson is 1 hour, Targhee is 1 hour, Ketchum/Sun Valley is 2.5 hours

Like a ski resort.

Looking at this map:

http://www.onthesnow.com/united-states/map.html

There's no city you can drive to 24 resorts in 3 hours. Colorado has one of the highest concentrations of resorts and I can't even get to 24 in 3 hours.

Popular back country ski areas don't count.

Either way I need to make it up to Wyoming. I hear great things. Maybe this season!

Got my Steamboat 3 day pass once again. I believe this is 3 out of 4 years straight for me. One of these days I'll mix it up and go somewhere else.

The only 2 times I went to steamboat the conditions were horrible. I was just unlucky. I know it's usually awesome. I'm hoping to use all 6 days on my pass at Steamboat this year.

We are going to Park City this year. For a few reasons... Now that they have merged with Canyons, they have the largest ski area in the entire U.S. Also, El Nino seems to bring more that average snowfall for the Utah area resorts.

For those who have been there before, what is the optimum time to go for snow conditions? We are planning either early or late Feb.

Whistler Blackcomb is bigger than Canyons/Park City but yeah it's just over the border in Canada.

I've never been to Whistler, but it is on my list. I have avoided is because as I understand it, the snow is heavy with moisture, and the elevation change is such that you often get rained on at the bottom part of the mountain and snowed on at the top. I despise with a passion going to ski and getting rain. I generally choose the coldest time to go skiing (I am missing that in Utah a bit to give the mountain time to get totally opened up).

Ah yeah I didn't realize it was such a low elevation (Whistler is only 7,165 ft). Yeah getting rained on sucks. I've gotten rained on at Steamboat before. Park City is pretty low elevation as well. I guess that's why you want to time it right.

Well, it isn't just the elevation. it is where the moisture is coming from and the path is takes to get there. It is much better for the Utah resorts (in general) than Whistler. That isn't to say you can't get epic conditions in Whistler. Related, I used to go to Tahoe, but I avoid it now because of the wet snow. I've only been to Tahoe once when I thought conditions were good. The whistler area has the same problem.

This year is going to be particularly difficult because of El Nino. I hope I didn't guess wrong on the area for more snow.

Makes sense. Steamboat is probably the lowest elevation resort I've been too. Most of the resorts here have a base of almost 10k feet and hit 12-13k at the summit so there's never any wet snow or rain at all albeit we may only get 350 inches of snow compared to 500+ in some resorts further north.

Going to try and make it out to Park City this season though so I'll be watching the conditions there. We'll see what El Nino does.
