this article says they are still on probation. I thought you couldn't be nationally ranked while on probation?

NCAA sanctions or probations have nothing to do with rankings. The AP can rank whoever it wants to. And when you're on probation, there are basically no restrictions other than don't mess up again.

four players suspendered for the first game per WRAL

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/unc-suspends-four-players-after-report-of-off-field-altercation/13930455/

Quote :
"One day after a report surfaced involving an off-field incident during fall training camp, University of North Carolina football has suspended four players for their season opener against Liberty.

Cornerbacks Des Lawrence, M.J. Stewart, and Brian Walker, as well as Donnie Miles were all suspended for one game for what head coach Larry Fedora called “a violation of team policy.”"

I really don't think this was hazing. White boy got jumped. There should be criminal charges.

^Me?

It's a redshirt freshmen getting beat up by a bunch of other sophomores. That's not hazing. That's getting beat up.

Question....I always see UNC fans mention Sweezy beating up an old bus driver whenever they try to make themselves feel better after a UNC player does something stupid. What's the full story on that? I'm sure its exaggerated a bit, just wondering what its based on. I don't remember that blowing up into a big deal.

The better question is: would UNC have suspended these players if this never had hit the media?

Of course the answer is No.

Adam and Joe really got to the center of this issue two days ago. The main points:

1. If there was hazing the kid would have obviously have gone to the police.
2. If it really happened then wral would be breaking the news instead of yahoo.
3. This wouldn't make news at state or duke.

People don't call the police for assault all the time, but that doesn't mean it's not assault. Hazing is making people sing or memorize names or carry equipment; if someone can get a concussion from hazing then it is assault and not hazing.

Not if the kid still held onto any hopes of making the team. Since when have college aged kids acted 100% rationally?

If it didn't happen then why did for guys just get suspended? Just because? From what I read yesterday, the only reason this even came out is because of the kid's parents, and I'm not sure they live in Raleigh.

It would, it just wouldn't be as big a deal.

^^^I disagree with #3. Players beating a teammate to the point of giving up a concussion is probably gonna make the local news. Especially if the player went to authorities about it.

And this doesn't sound like hazing to me at all. A redshirt-freshman walk-on? An odd hazing target IMO.

I disagree with all 3 of Adam & Joe's points.

jbrick - the old dudes on PP have been turning this into a racial thing, which it seemed like you were trying to do as well. apologies if not.

As far as Sweezy, he was drunk and knocked over the driver's tip jar when he was told to get off the bus. The bus driver followed after him and it "turned physical" was all I remember hearing. Don't think any specifics were ever released beyond that.

exactly. 1 game for concussing a teammate in a 4 on 1 hazing fight? way to send a great message fedora.

lol maybe they are just going to stagger the suspensions

We suspended 4 players one game and are investigating further.

On further investigation these additional 4 players will now be suspended 1 game.
...
Season done
...
The investigation is now 50 players are suspended indefinitely until start of practice next season

the book is closed on their punishment for this incident football wise, i assume?
Which means there may be criminal charges, but fedora will be done punishing them?

This might actually get interesting. The dude's brother went nuts on twitter last night...saying there were a lot more than 4 players involved and that Fedora is trying to sweep this under the rug. Apparently the family is lawyering up.

For all the t-dubbers that avoid Packpride...here is the juice from the insiders (all of these dudes have called just about everything correctly in the UNC scandal[s]:

From "manalishi" this morning:

Quote :
"There are some major facts surrounding this incident that the Boyer family is not even aware of yet. There were signs in the weeks leading up to it, and there was a lot of "activity" in the 3-4 days immediately afterwards. Let's see if their lawyers (and the media, for that matter) is worth their weight"

From other dudes yesterday and last night:

Quote :
"It was a hazing/prank that turned into a brawl because the kid wouldn't sit there and take it. Punches were thrown and connected. He was beat "pretty bad". 2-3 players that threw punches have yet to be punished by Fedora. This is causing a major rift on the team. 3 of the 4 players punished yesterday were heavily involved. One of them was not and is pissed and blaming the others that got away with it. A lot of "witnesses" to what happened. The truth will come out, and it will not be pretty. I think up to 6-8 players will be off the team over this. When will it stop?"

Man, UNC football is one fuck up after another. It'd be one thing if they could put together a 10 win team and actually compete for the ACC title (while still garnering negative off the field headlines). But instead they just keep fucking up while putting together mediocre season after mediocre season...continually failing to live up to "potential"

http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/09/09/4137040_unc-police-report-had-misleading.html?rh=1

Quote :
" Eighteen days before news broke that a UNC football player may have suffered a concussion from several teammates during a hazing incident, university police had been notified about a possible aggravated assault involving athletes at a hotel just off campus.

But few would have realized the subsequent written report was related to the incident at the Aloft hotel that has brought the latest wave of bad publicity to a university that has struggled with several athletics-related scandals in the past four years .

The first report filed by UNC police only shows an “allegation of aggravated assault.” It doesn’t identify the victim, any involved parties, or who contacted police about the incident. It identifies the police station as the location of the incident, and says it happened on Aug. 8, four days after the incident.

A crime log kept by the department to provide information to the public and the federal government also misreported the time, date and location of the alleged assault.

LOIC in it's purest form. The institute is controlled by the athletics department. It is amazing how UNC can cover up everything with so many willing participants and no one has the moral fortitude to say anything (other than the occassional Mary Willingham or Rashad McCants).

If the UNC campus police didn't have the jurisdiction to investigate an alleged crime that occurred off campus, why wouldn't they have immediately referred the complainant to Chapel Hill PD?

Someone knew that the complaint wouldn't get anywhere in UNC CPs hands and/or UNC CP failed miserably at their duties in every way.
