So I got a court date for driving with expired tags (tags literally came 2 days later)...how long is the process of showing up to court and showing them my registration? 9/21/2014 8:37:57 PM |

I believe I took my renewed tags to the courthouse at some random point well before my court date and they dropped it on the spot. Took it to some clerk somewhere and he took care of it in a minute or two. (10 years ago probably...) 9/21/2014 10:46:10 PM |

Not sure if you have to wait for the specific day, but the courtroom they do those tickets in is first come, first serve. No need to wait for the time listed. Go in, check in, a clerk/assistant DA calls your case, show them you paid it, leave without a fine. 9/22/2014 2:37:08 AM |

I've gotten a ticket for this before. Go to the courthouse, there's a line to wait in. You walk up with proof you renewed it and they dismiss it (no charge) and send you on your way. Length of the line is a crapshoot and I'm honestly not sure what is the best time to show up. 9/22/2014 9:13:59 AM |

So the situation y'all are discussing is when you have another sticker on order and it just hasn't come in yet? Can't they see that in the computer when they run the tags?
My related question is that my truck did not pass inspection a few months back. I want to get it back to my parents so I can work on it, but the tag is out of date now. I still have insurance on it though and it can still be driven. If I drive it home to fix it up and get pulled, how fucked am I? Could I get it inspected and then take that to court? Just want to know what my options are. Hate that I don't know a reasonable auto shop in Orange County. 9/22/2014 11:27:48 AM |

I remember my ticket being rather low cost when this happened to me ($50?). I mentioned I planned to pay it to a traffic lawyer buddy of mine because it wasn't worth my time (and had no negative license consequences). He just scoffed and told me to fax him a copy of the ticket and my renewed tags. Apparently it was 5 minutes of work for him. 9/22/2014 1:58:00 PM |

One time I didn't get my tag renewed for almost a whole year (my car was on the verge of total destruction and I only drove like twice a month at the time) and I got a ticket for it like 11 months in. They made me get a new one and pay for the last year too :^)
You should get this extended in court as many times as possible. Fuck tickets.
But in reality it only takes like 10 minutes to get this shit fixed assuming you get there right when it opens. Theres no line (if you get there before 9) and you just have to bring your new registration and depending on city you're in you may also need the data.pdf (idk what to call it) from the inspection station Its that sheet they give you that says your car doesn't emit global warming. They will drop it. Its not worth wasting a judge's time to them.

1. Call the clerk of court, or an assistant in the DA's office. 2. Fax proof that you fixed your shit. 3. Request that they excuse you from your court date because you are in compliance. 9/22/2014 2:53:41 PM |

Mine has been out since March
I even had a DA just say fuck it once, even though I still hadn't gotten the registration renewed, and dropped the case.

Went with my wife to the courthouse this week (not the actual courthouse but the new place across the street).
Anyhow, got it, went through the first line in 5 minutes (check in) and then got in the DA line, took about 15 minutes to get through it, but with the tags renewed, he dropped it completely. No fine whatsoever.
Toss up if it was worth the 1.5 hours of both of our time to take care of it vs the $215 pay by mail fine.
Is having it dropped seen differently on your record vs paying the fine? 9/25/2014 11:21:18 AM |

I'm currently driving with expired tags, hehe. Car failed inspection July 30th. Got it fixed and it passed inspection this morning, but it'll still be a few days before my registration sticker will arrive 9/25/2014 12:00:01 PM |

^In a similar boat, though I got my repairs done and have yet to take it to get inspected (my SC tags expire this month). I would have had it done at the same place, but the person qualified to do it had a triple bypass yesterday. I'll take it to another place Monday to get the inspection done, then I'll have to go to the DMV to get an NC license plate.

Also the DMV told me I owe county tax from last year so I can't renew yet. Which wasn't true...called up the Wake Co tax office and they were like "whoops, we forgot to remove your tax block". 9/25/2014 3:51:21 PM |

I drove around for literally a year with expired tags because I was/am a jackass. I finally got pulled for it in Wake County a few years back. I just showed up and proved that I got my tags taken care of and left without paying anything. 9/25/2014 4:07:06 PM |

That shit is typical.
I'm not exaggerating at all, I've only gotten the "original" bill for vehicle taxes ONCE in my life. They have no problem sending the "past due" notice, though. They even sent my boss a letter telling him to garnish my fucking wages once because they forgot to do some random thing after I paid up. 9/25/2014 11:55:52 PM |

Mine is due this month. Last year I failed inspection because I have 20% window tint . Had to get it removed, re-inspected, and within 30 minutes I was getting the tint reapplied . 9/27/2014 9:14:19 AM |

Yup. If I recall correctly I've never gotten any vehicle tax bill or anything similar from the state of nc on time. Literally only final notices.9/27/2014 9:22:55 AM |

Yes, if you pay the fine then you're admitting guilt. It goes on your record that you were guilty. If you get it dropped it'll show that you were charged but never found guilty.
I'll never understand why some people pay the fine even after a cop tells them what they have to do to get it dropped. I guess they just have more money than time or something.

You must've let your insurance lapse or the DMV fined you and you didn't pay. The DMV doesn't revoke tags for registration violations.
Also, cops who take tags aren't pricks, they're doing everyone else a favor. Imagine getting in an accident with someone who hasn't paid their insurance...

it's the best. especially when you don't find out about it until like a week after the accident because the insurance company didn't bother to communicate with DMV that the guy had stopped paying/they dropped his coverage. THE FUCKING BEST.10/15/2014 10:11:40 AM |

I had this happen one time and didn't even have to face the judge, or pay court fees. two people will be sitting at a table outside the court room. The one will check people in and the other will mark the people off the list who had expired tags. 10/19/2014 12:49:32 AM |
