Is it the same as chromecast, can you control it from your phone and cast local videos from your computer? 10/27/2014 8:26:02 PM |

Ordered one too. Dec 17th delivery date. It's got everything including Plex which is essentially streaming things from your PC. Plus it includes a remote and an Android app for control. Seems like a steal for $19. 10/27/2014 9:55:30 PM |

Always have to run my Netflix through a proxy internationally so I just run stuff to a hotel TV over HDMI. Would be nice to replace that set up with this. Amazon says the wifi sign-in page (where you need to authenticate over http) is coming soon. I don't know about proxy support though. Could probably figure something out. 10/27/2014 10:09:38 PM |

Not really. I think Prime Instant Video works a little better with the Amazon hardware. Plus you'll get more Android Apps if you have the Amazon stick. 10/28/2014 10:44:53 AM |

No problem!
But yeah, being able to put apps on it was one draw for me. The other draw was the Twitch and Prime apps. The bonus was the remote. All those features definiately made it a buy for me at $19.

I'm hoping they figure out the http sign in thing before it's shipped. Being able to use this at hotels is a huge plus for me. If they added proxy support that would be even better. 10/28/2014 12:58:38 PM |

So what are the limitations here? Sounds like that means any Android app on any Android phone or tablet. Or simply mirror the screen. Isn't that what Chromecast does?10/28/2014 4:58:29 PM |

Don't need it at all, but as a Prime member $19 is cheap enough to buy it just in case I find a use for it.
My chromecast has been giving me some lag recently, so it might lose its place on my AV receiver depending on what the capabilities of this thing are. 10/28/2014 5:11:18 PM |

Assuming it's like the OG Fire TV, which it's supposed to be, this should be worlds better than the Chromecast. The Chromecast is nothing more than a second screen for your phone or computer. It doesn't actually run any apps or game or anything (Note, I haven't bothered to even so much as plug in my Chromecast in months, so it might have gotten an update recently, but I haven't heard about it). The Fire TV does everything the Chromecast does plus a ton more. It actually runs apps, games, etc, it has a real remote (something I always HATED about the Chromecast), and you can sideload all sorts of other Android apps onto it to turn it into a full fledged media center pc if you want. Just as with any media device, I guess it comes down to what you want to use it for, and if all you care about is streaming netflix, or other videos all these devices are pretty much so the same. The only thing that makes any of them stand out are the extras, and in terms of extras, the Fire Stick should have a Chromecast beat by an embarrassingly large margin. 10/28/2014 9:58:32 PM |

Yeah they're completely different products. dtownral is dumb. The real question is why is the $100 Fire TV better than the $19 Fire Stick?

the SoC on the fire stick is about 4 years old. the SoC on the fire TV is about 1.5 years old. the hardware alone accounts for the difference. if you don't want to play top android games or do any heavy lifting on the device, there's no difference in the 2 from a user experience besides a somewhat clunky "second-screen-remote" experience in comparison to the native remote. 10/28/2014 11:19:54 PM |

For a lot of people it won't be noticeably better. Personally, I'd pay extra for the better hardware, and the USB port, which I plugged a hub into and use for mouse, keyboard, xbox 360 controllers, external storage and a flirc IR receiver so I can control the AFTV with my Harmony remote.10/29/2014 12:54:57 AM |

Yes but this isn't a "Smart TV" this is a dedicated device. The experience is supposed to be more like a Roku or Apple TV both of which I've used and been very smooth.10/29/2014 10:13:14 AM |

Yeah, I think they changed it a while after I ordered. I placed my order just a couple of minutes after it was announced/available or whatever. And at that time it didn't say anything about not shipping until much later, and that you could order up to 2 devices. I guess demand was more than they expected so they had to throttle back.10/29/2014 10:45:00 AM |

i had a delay with every input on my roku (and loading apps wasn't very quick either) but never owned an Apple TV. I was including other devices when I said that (roku, PS3, XBox 360, Xbox One), none of them have been very good.10/29/2014 11:30:38 AM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
Good compared to what? Using a wireless keyboard with a browser on your couch? What do you mean by delay? The Roku 3 I've used has been almost instant. Same with the Fire TV. Apple TV is pretty quick too. Sure it's no XBMC on a computer but that's comparing apples and oranges. 10/29/2014 11:36:59 AM |
dtownral Suspended 26632 Posts user info edit post |
Oh, i had a Roku 2. You press an arrow and a moment later your selection moves, it wasn't instant. sometimes it would kinda get hung up and then skip ahead. i gave it to my mom because it was so annoying.
Xbox 360 was the smoothest I've used for media apps, but the Chromecast is a lot easier to use.

^They might not have an "Apple TV Stick" yet, but they have had Apple TV. And Apple certainly wasn't late to the smartphone party like Amazon was. 10/29/2014 5:32:28 PM |
El Nachó special helper 16370 Posts user info edit post |
So the Apple TV is ok, but you're ignoring the Fire TV for the purposes of your pointless little rant? And you're comparing the Fire phone to the Fire Stick, because why? Amazon lost over $100 million in making the Fire phone, yet there's now a 3 month wait when you pre-order a Fire Stick. They're not even remotely the similar. Sometimes I think you type out messages just to see the words in your head appear on a computer screen.] 10/29/2014 5:44:25 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148565 Posts user info edit post |
Fire TV came out 6 months ago.
Meanwhile, Chromecast came out nearly 18 months ago. Apple TV came out 2.5 years ago. Roku came out like 6 years ago.
So, being the last of the 4 companies to come out with a streaming device is similar to them being the last of the major players in the smartphone market. That's called being late to the party. Or do I need to dumb it down even more for you?
Hell, even that shitty Ouya that you bought came on the scene before Fire TV.

I don't think being last to the party is always bad. Apple is usually last to the party with most major features but they usually do a great job of selling those features as new and exciting. I don't see why this doesn't work for Amazon as well. If it's a great device that builds upon all the others how is that a bad thing? That's exactly what Apple does. 10/29/2014 6:40:06 PM |
