http://www.indyweek.com/news/archives/2015/01/22/the-red-menace-civitas-unveils-vast-left-wing-activist-network

links provided in the story
Quote :
"Wait, is this the Onion? No just a press release by the Civitas Institute, a conservative think tank brought to you by the Pope Foundation empire. Civitas dropped a bombshell today, announcing today that it has launched a new website Mapping the Left, which will for the "first time, expose the full extent of a vast, shadowy network of left-wing activist groups." [Emphasis mine.]

Cue the soundtrack from Psycho! The AARP is part of the left-wing network? Do you mean my grandmother could be a Commie?

Yes, the left is so shadowy, it's like film noir on steroids. It's hard to find MDC and the Center for Responsible Lending, which have shrouded themselves with storefront offices emblazoned with their logs, surreptitiously located on Main Street in Durham. Oh, Binkley Baptist Church, so clever you are, hidden near University Mall in Chapel Hill. The American Postal Workers Union, disguised as letter carriers. Wait—they are letter carriers.

If you peruse the site, which from a technical and user interaction perspective, is nearly impenetrable, you'll find the usual targets: groups advocating for a more equitable, just and nonviolent society. What the Coalition Against Sexual Assault is doing on here, I don''t know. Is opposing rape a liberal issue?

“For too long, radical and well-funded activist groups have been able to operate in the state without the level of scrutiny that is routinely applied to the Right,” said Civitas Elections Policy Analyst Susan Myrick in the press release. “The Mapping the Left project not only provides that scrutiny, but also puts to rest the misguided notion that there is a vast right-wing conspiracy in North Carolina. In fact, it is the Left, through its complex web of funding and coordination, that is exerting massive power and influence throughout the state.”

The Civitas Institute promises to add "new revelations" to the site throughout the spring to let people know about the "alarming amount of power" the left has in the "media, state politics, and government." Yes, the left has so much power that conservatives have gained control of the legislature, the governor's office and the N.C. Supreme Court, as well as many state agencies—Department of Labor, Department of Commerce, Department of Environment and Natural Sciences.

In the spirit of transparency, here is a flowchart the INDY published in 2011 showing the reach of Art Pope. It's definitely time to update it, because his influence has never been greater.

And remember in 2013 when Civitas published personal (though public) information about Moral Monday protesters who had been arrested? Here is our post showing who's who at Civitas—before the contact page was scrubbed. By the way, a year and a half later, that page remains scrubbed, with only Francis X. De Luca listed.

Yeah I think I could chill with dentaldamn and moron. We would probably agree on lots of topics as long as we didn't talk about social welfare and the alleged conspiracy to hold African Americans in poverty.

I wouldn't even pull over to pee on synapse though if he were on fire on the side of I84.

Just don't go to blind pig or Solstice. Whiskey Warehouse fits the same category in Plaza Midwood. It is where the downtown and dilworth douches go to feel edgier by hanging in Plaza Midwood.

dog bar doesn't offer anything special. it's basically the shell of p-stone with a patio overran by dogs with no live music. They cleaned up the interior a bit but there is no reason to go inside anymore.

common market is still fine, they remodeled the bar inside which is an improvement. But it's hard to enjoy the patio these days unless you enjoy being smothered in cigarette smoke and vapor clouds. Rhino Market and CM Southend offer a better experience these days.

Solstice is fine. It doesn't really have an identity anymore. It's a reliable fall back that always has available seating inside and out. The youths go to Blind Pig, the people from the other side of the city go to Cabo and Davidson Public House, and the NoDa regulars go to Beagle's or Sanctuary.

it's funny how calling out racist and homophobic assholes makes one a liberal. I laugh anytime some teabagger fucknut calls me one.

I've probably voted for more republicans than democrats, though i don't really keep count. but i'm one of those crazy swing voters who doesn't have an allegiance to either party.

though if the GOP keeps doubling down on being the party of "lets be a dick to everyone except rich white men" that voting record is gonna tip the other way.

I do like CM Southend. I used to go to Sanctuary when I lived in CLT too. Solstice never seemed to be anything special. Seems like all the culture left NoDa years back. Hoping the same doesn't happen to Plaza Midwood. Although John's Country Kitchen closed. That place had a place in my heart.

culture is getting forced out of all the neighborhoods, midwood included. New luxury apartments that cost $1.50/sqft and house flippers buying out the affordable homes are all forcing the middle class out of the neighborhoods. Charlotte is pretty generic these days.

Kinda my thoughts. I always enjoyed Plaza Midwood better then NoDa. Most of the bars just seem like generic hangout places in NoDa except perhaps Salud and Neighborhood theatre.

bTW i've heard houses in Villa Heights are selling for $400K these days.

Jeez that's ridiculous. My best memories of NoDa were in highschool in 2000-2004 when it was still mostly art galleries and just a few bars. I remember this great vegan restaurant across from the YMCA that had the best tempeh reuben. We used to always hit on this smoking lesbian waitress. I couldn't even drink back then and it was more fun than it is now.

Looks like I picked the perfect time to leave! Shocked they are razing Jackalopes to make another luxury apartment complex. At this rate soon all the restaurants and bars will be gone and we'll have to uber uptown for everything.

i really like how conservative talking heads have made the word "liberal" have such a negative connotation. in reality, it's just a word...it shouldn't come with a strong positive or negative connotation attached to it. i don't feel as if the word "conservative" has the same connotation.

Quote :

i think this is true for most of the population. unfortunately, tons of people are quick to bring up race, politics, social issues, etc and then i don't wanna talk to them anymore.

It's funny I rarely ever see liberal that, liberal this. It's mostly conservative that, conservative this... from Facebook, friends, etc. I get the majority of my news from NPR, NYTimes, BBC so those are more objective at least in terms of name calling.

I mean if you want to get down to it the majority of our generation is socially liberal for the most part. Mainly it's fiscally liberal versus conservative that's the issue. I guess you could still find some socially conservative folks in the deep south in rural areas.

Yeah most of the liberal this/liberal that stuff comes from, in my experience, conservative talk radio and fox news. And I'll see it linked on facebook too...but that's all just a matter of who you happen to be friends with on facebook. yeah I definitely hear the term liberal use as a pejorative than the reverse. Not just from talk radios but also colleagues and acquaintances. Not so much anymore here in OR.

I also hate when people tell me I'm listening to liberal propaganda when I listen to NPR or like the BBC. I listen to NPR on a weekly basis and I continuously hear interviews and stories from liberals, conservatives, tea party members, independents, NRA members, etc. Not to mention there's many conservative commentators and even conservative columnists have spoken out and defended NPR on how objective it is compared to other new outlets.

^haha depends where you go in Plaza Midwood but yeah a lot of the biker gangs that frequent CM can get annoying.

Montford always felt like the place where all the recently graduated "Frat-Daddies" and "Sorostitutes" from UNC go to hang out.

I had a chick bitch one time because NoDa "is like so far away" when the group wanted to hit up Jack Beagles.
