http://www.bendbulletin.com/business/2805824-151/cars-new-feature-fake-engine-noise
So the new Eco-Boost Ford Mustang plays artificial engine sounds through its stereo speakers. Isn't that the opposite of what a muscle car buyer would want?? (that is who they are targeting with this)
Quote : | "Drivers want all the force and fuel savings of a newer, better engine — but the classic sound of an old gas-guzzler...
For the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost, Ford sound engineers and developers worked on an “Active Noise Control” system that amplifies the engine’s purr through the car speakers. Afterward, the automaker surveyed members of Mustang fan clubs on which processed “sound concepts” they most enjoyed...
Among purists, the trickery has inspired an identity crisis and cut to the heart of American auto legend. The “aural experience” of a car, they argue, is an intangible that’s just as priceless as what’s revving under the hood. " |
Also:
Quote : | ""With the EcoBoost engine we have both active noise cancellation and we also amplify the existing engine sound order," stated Perciak. "We don't create an artificial sound; we don't pluck one off the shelf; we bring in the real sound, process it, and play it through the car's speakers. Today's V6 sounds fantastic, and although the EcoBoost won't sound like a V8, it won't sound like it doesn't belong in a Mustang, either."" |
then former President of Denver Mustang Club:
Quote : | "“For a car guy, it’s literally music, to hear that thing rumble,” said Mike Rhynard, 41, a past president and 33-year member of the Denver Mustang Club. He’s swayed between love and hate with the snarl-boosting sound tube in his 2012 Mustang GT, but of the computerized noise, he’s unequivocal: “It’s a mind-trick. It’s something it’s not. And no one wants to be deceived.” " |
On the Mustang they say the sound is not artificial and then they say the Mustang Fan Club picked their favorite "processed sound concepts”. Then you have Mike Rhynard saying it is literally music, meaning the sound is completely unrelated to anything under the hood. I'm assuming Ford wanted to use the cars own engine sound, but couldn't produce the sound they wanted. Or maybe Ford is taking the engine sound and then basically using it as the volume control on a "processed" sound. Such as when you talk through a mic with a Darth Vader emulator/voice changer, that is my guess.
I was reading on this topic in general and even the damn BMW i8 is doing this. Just how many cars are doing this and do they tell the buyers before purchasing? How does this affect playing your actual stereo how it was intended? Do they have a separate speaker setup just for your fake engine sounds? Now how long before they start putting vibration motors in the seats?

To me this sounds like the exact opposite direction cars that claim to be muscle cars should be going. Even an Eco-Boost Mustang is considered a modern muscle car because of body/chassis/name, doesn't matter it has a pussy motor. They probably have more horsepower than a 1981 Z28 (175HP) and yes that was a 350, but Ford could surely play with the exhaust like on the Boss Mustang to produce something better than fake digital sounds.
Now I have driven a 2014 302 Boss Mustang and they do sound nasty, but I drove a 2014 Z28 right after that and it was so much quicker (however not as loud). Here is a shot of the quad exhaust on the Boss that gives it the sound.
You can hear the Mustang at this link: http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/cuba-iconic-cars-1950s-284199361/23/2015 12:16:27 PM |

BMW is doing it on more than just the i8 - it's on all of their M models now isn't it? it's on at least a few of them - ford has been doing this for a while as well - this isn't brand new news 1/23/2015 12:35:02 PM |

I don't like the idea
but what makes it even worse is that you're the only one that can hear it. I don't want it to sound nice to me and have some shitty engine noise blaring at everyone else 1/23/2015 1:13:44 PM |

I know the Focus ST has a baffle or something that opens at higher RPMs that directs sound from the intake manifold into the cabin. (Ford calls it the sound symposer) Maybe not quite as bad sound through the speakers but still a little weird and I don't think it is heard outside the car. I do like the way it sounds though 1/23/2015 3:29:29 PM |

bmw did the sound simposer thing (connecting the intake to the cabin in some way to ressonate noise) a long time ago... now they just play engine music by bimmer over the radio.
They claim they've made their cabin's so quiet you can't hear the exhaust. 1/23/2015 4:34:58 PM |

People that buy this nonsense are killing the car market for gear heads.
I'll stop there, I could rant until the end of days about how stupid it is to buy a low power (muscle car) etc etc etc.

I think this is great, this way the toolbag with his 4cyl mustang can sit over there and rev away while all the traffic around him is undisturbed. 1/24/2015 8:41:32 AM |

This is just the press going nuts. The active noise cancellation is actually there to enhance performance and fuel economy, but for it to make sense you have to look at the big picture.
With active noise cancellation I have much greater freedom with the engine tuning and the design of the intake and exhaust restriction. I can use more EGR (typically internal through valve timing but cooled external EGR is growing) for better fuel economy, because I can use the active noise cancelling to counteract obnoxious droning sounds. Low pressure EGR systems are especially bad, and they're on tons of diesels and are now finding their way into gasoline engines. The same applies for active engine mounts; one of their main purposes is to counteract torque fluctuations from internal EGR used for better fuel economy.
It helps for performance because now I don't need to constrict my exhaust and intake system for the sake of noise. I can use freer flowing intake systems and exhaust systems because I don't have to use fixed mechanical designs to block sounds that most people don't want to hear. 1/24/2015 5:05:27 PM |

This is the fucking genius of it. You can sit there doing 25 from stoplight to stoplight and feel like you are fast and furious. Meanwhile, everyone else can take a break from hearing the fart can noise from your slow ass daily driver. I know its tough to live without that 15 extra HP that comes from your sweet performance exhaust, but honestly it won't be the end of the world if you get to the coffee thirty seconds later than you would with your stock exhaust.1/26/2015 2:58:17 AM |

The thing is we are talking about a Mustang (mainly) here, not a Honda Civic. Only idiots use those types of mufflers on American Sports Cars. Honestly I didn't even think about the "only you can hear it" thing, that makes it even more stupid.
Do yall agree with me on saying the EcoBoost Mustang is still considered a modern muscle car? I say this because people are arguing it, however nobody argues that a V6 Mustang isn't a muscle car (for the last ~50 years).
My other question is still, does the manufacturer inform the buyer of this feature? 1/26/2015 11:13:55 AM |

Lets all agree that a ecoboost mustang is in no way a muscle car.
2015 V6 Mustang
Quote : | "3.7L Ti-VCT V6 engine 300 horsepower 280 lb-ft. of torque 19 city/28 hwy/22 combined mpg*" |
2015 Ecoboost V4 Mustang
Quote : | "310 horsepower* 320 lb-ft. of torque* 21 city/32 hwy/25 combined mpg**" |
How can the V6 not be muscle and the Ecoboost is? The ecoboost is a hippy muscle car "I want a somewhat fast car but I cry about MPG".1/26/2015 11:33:14 AM |

I think what he's referring to is rated output compared to previous models.
1993 Fox body GT was 225hp/300ft-lb, iirc. 1/26/2015 11:42:33 AM |

I mean I guess you can say its modern muscle, but you can compare a 2015 Camry to a 1980's Camaro and say a new Camry is modern muscle. A turbo, 4 banger that runs 14s in the 1/4 mile is not a muscle car in my book.
Don't want to get off topic, but I always find it interesting that there isn't a huge difference in MPG, between the V8 and V6.
Ecoboost is the way to go to save gas I guess.

^Mustangs are still chick cars. I've noticed mostly Indians driving the 2015s, might be a Raleigh thing. 2015 stang is hands down the ugliest mustang ever produced.
^^Valid statement, but a overpowered mustang (GT500 etc) is a muscle car in my opinion.
