"Consider too that, according to The Washington Post, “the cost of acquiring video content was ‘the single biggest impediment'” to Fiber’s wider rollout, Fiber executive Milo Medin told an audience in 2014. Google was reportedly paying “twice as much” compared with more established service providers for video rights, in part because it lacked comparable vertical integrations and legacy deals."

So they were getting screwed on content deals. If they put everything through YouTube TV they have more scale to throw around.

I have not tested it yet, but it sounds like only some VOD has 5.1.

I just went back to ATT 1000 and signed up for YouTube TV. Tired of having a DVR that only works in one room. I like the option of using the YouTube TV at multiple locations. (We have 4 Spectrum acts between our vacation homes, home, and office). The Roku app on Spectrum used to be a good deal but nothing has been done to enhance it and there is no DVR or pause. There are also constant outages.

Hoping the YoutTube Tv satisfies the vacation renters...it has local networks and espn, just no A&E (which sucks) but whatever. Will save over $100 a month and be able to access my DVR from anywhere including phone iPad. At the properties that only have spectrum it will be 45-50/mo ad long as I stay on a promo.

We tried YouTube TV at the rental but got complaints from people who couldn't figure it out after we bought a TV that had it built in. Most renters were fine, but the people who couldn't figure it out also couldn't figure it out with help on phone so we had to offer some discounts. If I did it again I'd try to find a TV or device that had a big youtube tv button on the remote.

So I just canceled our Google Fiber TV service after almost 3 years. I only need to bring back the TV boxes, not the DVR/network box. I'm keeping their internet service.

Is there any advantages to keeping the DVR version of the network box? I'm thinking I would prefer the non-DVR version as I assume it does not have a hard drive, therefore my battery backup system would last longer.

So far the TV boxes are still acting as access points.

Why did you cancel Google Fiber?

I only canceled the Google Fiber TV service. They keep raising the prices and will eventually phase it out. I'm saving $65/month by switching to YouTube TV.

Got online with GFBR on Jan 9th in Cary. I've been happy so far, particularly after ripping out their equipment and getting my own router running.

well

Spectrum offered me a 3 year contrat at $29.99 a month. I knew Google had been down my street but it had been months and still no option to sign up. I guess I will try it out in 2024.

I already have ATT fiber and the Google fiber was just pulled down my road yesterday on the opposite side of the street.

I'd switch to Google Fiber in a heartbeat, but I haven't even seen anyone running lines on this side of north Raleigh in over a year

Whatever contractors Google has hired to install fiber in my neighborhood are pulling fiber through 1/2 inch conduit by hand off a spool stood up in the back of a beat up 20 year old pickup.

What's the point of 2gb/s if current wifi hardware can't even remotely approach 1gb/s?

[Edited on May 15, 2021 at 10:30 PM. Reason : I guess maybe if you have like 10 people in your house streaming at the same time ]

[Edited on May 15, 2021 at 11:07 PM. Reason : Not that there is anything wrong with that]

^^^ Being able to interact with remote machines as if they were sitting next to you is great. I work remotely and being able to do high speed file access with the big remote storage arrays is very nice.

I just got the 2GB down speed last week. I don't have that port hooked up to this computer (its connected to my PS4), but still loving Google Fiber.

Since they lit the google fiber on my street, I probably get one email request to sign up every day and I get letters in the mail begging me to sign up twice a week. They're not cheaper than ATT fiber and they're feeling spammy.

^ they keep sending solicitations after running their lines and then waiting another year to offer service. I got a $29/ mo 3 year contract from Spectrum....not cancelling that.

https://www.engadget.com/att-is-rolling-out-multi-gig-fiber-internet-to-more-than-70-cities-170139410.html
I'm wondering how (and if) Google will respond to this.

My new neighbor is all about this. Our apt complex can only get att and i guess 50mb per second isn’t good enough? Mentioned to me 4 times how we are slated to get fiber or whatever it is. I’m happy with 60/month. Really don’t see the need to be above that price or speed
