what is the purpose of comments like that?

what if the robber shot one of the staff first and then the pharmacist shot him? what would your reaction be then?

"another good guy with a gun didnt act fast enough"

"another good guy with a gun didnt make a difference"

"if he had been a trained professional he could have acted before one of his coworkers got shot"

theres no winning with people like you.

A fairly old one, but still quite entertaining. We could probably have a whole thread for just failed carjacking videos

I bet these responsible gun owners would support closing the gun show loophole, and increasing measures to discourage mentally disrupted people from acquiring guns, amirite?

Right, those things require resources and rules, in the absence of which it doesn't happen. Hence loophole.

IOW, it's not an attack on gun enthusiasts values to prescribe ways to solve these specific problems. It's projects an mentality of irrationalism to react so defensively to these prescriptions.

^^^^ dude, the "gun show loophole" isn't really about gun shows. for that matter, it isn't really what I would call a loophole, and simply getting rid of that provision and requiring all transfers going through an FFL would be either unenforceable or would require a registry of all firearms.

I mean, if you wanted to give everyone, not just FFLs, access to the background check hotline, and could do it in such a way that it didn't endanger people's privacy, and then required all sellers, private or FFL, to check the background of the buyer, then I'd go for that I think. It wouldn't be easily enforceable; you'd have to rely on people following the law, but it would be a tool that would help scrupulous sellers, at least.

^ that's where the "gun show" part of "gun show loophole" comes in, it puts the onus on show organizers and local officials to make sure the wrong people aren't buying guns, it also provides incentives for local authorities to enforce these laws. Which would be the point of any legislation... to provide tools and guidance to the people that need it.

IOW, the "problems" you cited are easily surmountable, and doesn't really demand the hate that some gun enthusiasts have for the policies. It's just providing further tools to enforce the current sprit of existing laws...

Anyway, point was that gun people get unreasonably defensive about anything related to guns, so it's hard for people to even discuss the issue politically. Just seeing if this has changed at all... doesn't seem to have.

Gun shows don't do that. It's not like local officials are screening ticket buys/attendees to see if they are fellons before they enter the trade show.

there's no point arguing this, especially with moron. It's been discussed repeatedly over various threads.

Clackamas mall shooter faced man with concealed weapon

Quote :
"PORTLAND -- Nick Meli is emotionally drained. The 22-year-old was at Clackamas Town Center with a friend and her baby when a masked man opened fire.

I heard three shots and turned and looked at Casey and said, 'are you serious?,' he said.

The friend and baby hit the floor. Meli, who has a concealed carry permit, positioned himself behinda pillar.

He was working on his rifle, said Meli. He kept pulling the charging handle and hitting the side.

The break in gunfire allowed Meli to pull out his own gun, but he never took his eyes off the shooter.

As I was going down to pull, I saw someone in the back of the Charlotte move, and I knew if I fired and missed, I could hit them, he said.

Meli took cover inside a nearby store. He never pulled the trigger. He stands by that decision.

I'm not beating myself up cause I didn't shoot him, said Meli. I know after he saw me, I think the last shot he fired was the one he used on himself.

Photos:Clackamas Town Center shooting

The gunman was dead, but not before taking two innocent lives with him and taking the innocence of everyone else.

Idon't ever want to see anyone that way ever, said Meli. It just bothers me.

"It has also been consistently and repeatedly confirmed that
defensive gun use (DGU) is effective: crime victims who use
guns for self-protection are less likely to be injured or lose
property than otherwise similar victims in otherwise similar crime
situations who either do not resist at all or who use other selfprotection
strategies (the body of evidence is reviewed in Kleck 1997, pp. 170-175). In recent years, it has become increasingly rare that critics dispute the claim that DGU is effective."

Dude, FFLs have to play by the same rules they always do. They don't get to just go nuts and do whatever at guns shows. Private sellers also play by the same rules they always do at guns shows, which is that they can sell a gun without all the background check stuff as long as they have no reason to believe the buyer can't legally make the purchase. Gun shows have fucking nothing to do with anything. I mean, you could make private sellers have to do FFL transfers while attending a gun show, and then hardly any of them would sell anything at a gun show-they'd do it outside of gun shows, which is how the great majority of private sales happen anyway (I think that gun shows are overwhelmingly populated by FFLs as it is, anyway). It wouldn't accomplish anything.

You could (in theory) make ALL gun sales have to go through an FFL, but good fucking luck with passing that, and that absolutely would have the problems I mention, and they would not be at all surmountable.

The only thing I can think of that would be useful is what I posted the first time:

I mean, if you wanted to give everyone, not just FFLs, access to the background check hotline, and could do it in such a way that it didn't endanger people's privacy, and then required all sellers, private or FFL, to check the background of the buyer, then I'd go for that I think. It wouldn't be easily enforceable; you'd have to rely on people following the law, but it would be a tool that would help scrupulous sellers, at least.

That, and maybe some sort of shall-issue purchase-permit system kind of like what NC has for handguns. That maybe could be workable, but it's also a slippery slope that I'd be wary of, at best.
