Almost every person that has mentioned it to me doesn't realize its not a sequel to Episode 7.

I'm surprised but not surprised.

(Disclaimer- it looks amazing)

Plot wise, now that they already killed 4 5 and 6 with 7, the plot of that whole trilogy has been rendered pointless so obviously its prequal will be pointless.

I wish they would have started with this movie to "capture the attention of new fans" and put more thought into episode 7 which was the most important movie in the plot of the series.

This is a movie where the entire goal is to get the plans to the ultimate weapon, so it can be destoryed
and then rebuilt again
and then destroyed again along with the empire
and then rebuilt bigger and better and destroyed again

Yes, having another super weapon in 7 was a cop out.

Why is that the focus for Rogue one? There could be so much more. The plans being the end goal are just the end game. The sacrifice and struggle getting there is the real meat of this movie.

Hopefully.

So little of Mendelsohn and Vader, Figured a bit of both in this. At least a cameo shot of Vader.

Whats up with the wavey wing shuttles now? They started that in 7, and look like they used the same ship here. I know they had the one little one in 6 but it was scaled, These things the wings are twice the size of the ship.

Assuming this is all after the reshoots, glad to see theres still a decent amount of gunbattles in. Wish it could have been seen as the "war story" it was before.

The winged ships look like troop transports. Probably derivative of the robot transports that land on Naboo in Episode 1.

soooooooooooooo, extra credit thought.

The asian guy is a force user. But not a Jedi. So the normal audience gets to realize that there are force users who are not Jedi. That being a Jedi or Sith is not a requirement if you're a force user.

Now, in Episode 8, I've heard that there is something going on with force users balancing the light side and dark side within themselves. If you can do this you become more powerful. They have already spoken to this concept in the cannon cartoons.

So the audience learns that you dont have to be Sith or Jedi. That they are just factions of force users. The implication is that there could be other groups. Or solo users. Then in Episode 8 they learn that you can balance the Jedi and Sith's way of using the force.

So now the audience understands this.

Is the next step to go back to the prophecy in Episode 1? The one who will bring balance to the force. If Luke or Rey brings balance to the force INTERNALLY, is that what the prophecy is speaking to. That killing Palpatine/Vader didnt bring balance to the force.

Its suggested that the ancient Jedi originally did this. Bring balance. Perhaps the origin of the prophecy is going back to the original formation of the 'Jedi'

ugh, its unhealthy to have this kind of motivation for useless minutia.

Explains some of the characters. Asian guy is blind.

They are transports, just out of Ep7. Lamda shuttles (what Rebels flew to Endor) is probably the Ep6 basis, but they were a lot smaller than these and the wings were a lot more scaled to the ship.

If you dont mind the cliffhanger at the end of the series (she didnt finish, long story) but like clone wars from a trooper perspective look at Karen Travers and the Imperial Commando books.

better question is, what do you like? characters and events. Ive read anything thats come out except the very early pre-clone wars stuff, up to anything yuzhan vong (I dont recommend reading them). Ive not read aftermath or bloodline.

It's a "star wars story," so in my mind that means it should be more about the growth of a character like Luke had regardless of what the mission actually was. Star Wars is more fantasy than it is science-fiction. The death star plan is just a story tool and should not itself be the story itself, just like how the same plans helped the story in Episode IV, but you kind of forget about them until the battle briefing towards the end.

So who cares if we already know the thing gets rebuilt? The adventure is what counts and from what I've seen and heard, I have my hopes up that this movie will deliver.

its important because a little more thought and the audience would be invested in the result. knowing there the mission is pointless takes that away. it doesn't mean it can't be a great movie though.

The tone in the new TV spots is incredibly confusing and a bit worrisome. It reminds of a mix between the light-hearted comedy of Guardians of the Galaxy and the darkness of Batman vs. Superman.

This one in particular:

At the very least, it seems like the droid might be very annoying.

I really want spin offs to be a big deal and be successful. I way more interested in a crew like Firefly/Serenity.

For some reason Rebels doesn't grab my attention. Maybe the live action series will include something like this.

Amazing battles. Was surprised how good the beach battles were. Vader in the hallway was the best scene in the entire movie. Small, intense, claustrophobic. Amazing.

I didn't car enough about all the characters when they died but it was done well enough.

The fan service was a distraction to the movie. It didn't serve it at all. Two ones that stood out were R2 and C3PO, and cantina guys. Not worth the screen time.

Overall I thought it was really good. Its top 3 easily.

I think Force awakenings gets worse the more you think about it. This movie I imagine will get better the more you think about it.

Yep really enjoyed it. I must say one of my favorite parts were the homages to the look and tech in ANH. Like the gear in the control room in the temple on Yavin IV. The spotter watching the ships come and go. The dude throwing the controls in the Death Star. All of that was fantastic and flowed pretty seamlessly into and out of the movie. I think some of the cameos were fine and very well done. Didn't super need R2 & 3PO at that time, but in a shot as they ran around the ship after departing would have been enough for me. Many of the smaller touches impressed me the most and small cameos from people that only appeared for a brief moments or a scene or two in ANH were really good.

END SPOILERS NW GO WATCH THE FUCKING MOVIE IT IS GREAT!

The CGI on Tarkin and Leia were weird. When it first showed Tarkin, his face wasn't so clear so I didn't realize it was CGI. I just figured they had a really good makeup artist. But the more of him they showed the more it stood out to me and I couldn't unsee it. Was pleased to see Bail Organa show up. Also pleased that they finally explained the gaping weakness in the Death Star that had been a plot hole since Ep IV. Space battle at the end was awesome. The hallway scene where Vader wrecked shit was fucking badass. I'm really pleased that it ended literally minutes before the beginning of Episode IV.

Question: How was the blind guy able to do all that shit? They outright said he wasn't a Jedi. I guess he was just force sensitive but never actually trained? Why did he end up helping Jyn and Cassian to begin with? Enough to just stick with them the rest of the movie?

The books built upon this in the expanded universe. The thought is that there are force sensitive people out there in the universe, but being able to connect with the force does not automatically make one a Jedi or a Sith.

NON SPOILER

Fight scenes are done very well. It doesn't feel exactly like Saving Private Ryan or anything but it definitely moves star wars closer to that. Because of it being more like a war movie the fan service parts, 2 obvious ones, feel out of place. Maybe a total of 15 seconds for both of them but it feels drawn out and unnecessary even with only this. The key word is distraction. For the one on Jedha it makes the universe feel smaller rather than larger, WhichIsTheEntirePointOfTheMovieToMakeItFeelLarger

You get to see some of the dynamics within the Empire a bit which is enjoyable.

The rebellion is fleshed out. Lots of shades of grey introduced.

All in all, you just want so much more from this movie. There are so many characters that you want more conversations to happen with but the movie had to fit into 2ish hours. I have heard the book Catalyst is really a good book to read before this movie.

I need to see it again, but I think I like it better than Force awakenings. Reason being, the more I think about TFA I can only think about how many business decisions were made to retread territory to make it a financial success. Another death star, etc. This one feels like it will get better, not worse with age.

It could easily be the 2nd best movie depending on your interpretation.

Flat out awesome.

For what it's worth I'd save myself a few bucks and not bother with the 3D, it didn't add a lot.

{SPOILER}

I could watch Vader wreck shit like that for 2.5 hours and consider it money well spent. Also, that scene with him out-of-armor in that stasis tank was pretty badass.

I enjoyed the cameos. Though I would've loved to see Porkins if they were gonna throw those in there.

The CGI for Tarkin was amazing, though I could have used a little less of him in the movie as a whole because the CGI does become more obvious the more time he's on screen. Leia also looked very good.

The dovetail into EPIV was really well done, was not expecting that to be so tight.

For a SW movie it was on the darker side, but none the worse for that.

i enjoyed it

[spoilers]

cameos were good, and those complaining about it are nitpicking, c3-p0 and r2d2 were a blip and the cantina guys were random as hell (and you would expect them to die in the explosion), but oh well

the imperial droid was nice comic relief and had some good one-liners, but it seemed like one of the same characters from the knights of the old republic video game (although general audience people wouldn't know about that)

that at-ats were cool, but random as hell (and seemed way unnecessary for protecting the base), i always thought those would be for assault operations, not defense (and they seemed to pop out of nowhere) especially when there is a planetary shield

it was also a little silly that the rebellion would decide against the plan to get the the death star schematics, but as soon as they hear that 10 people went to get them they send a fleet for support. It would have made more sense for a large faction of rebels (like the mon calamari) to create an organized plan and then the rest come to support them once they hear about it (but they used the new star trek movie method of interstellar travel to instantaneously jump across star systems to lend support. The whole "master switch" series of events seemed a little overkill too, and it would have been better for the captain to abandon the ship (and realize he was going to sacrifice his life) to go into the base to send the message.

it was nicely done to show the amount of sacrifice it took to get the death star plans, including everyone dieing. But what about the bothans!?! As far as I can tell, they just disregarded the term "bothans" from when a new hope when "Many Bothans died to bring us this information". Very small thing, but as was mentioned above, they did a good job of closing the plot hole of the open port to destroy the death star.

They did a good job of expanding the star wars universe in showing other planets and the workings of the empire (and showing how politics with the senate was still import even after establishing the empire), but they still relegated whole planets down to single purpose installations. The books do a good job of showing the planets as being real worlds where the empire has a presence but does not have a tight hold on everything. Twice the empire showed no hesitation to blow up their bases (especially when one was the source of power for the death star and one held all the plans for their weapons).

They showed the death star at the end of episode 3, so it took ~15 years to build the first one but only ~5 to build the second? Even if they were building both at the same time, it seems like a stretch. And a team of 10 scientists to design the whole thing? Why were the scientists at such an unsecured location, which was separate from the death star itself, which was separate from the fuel mine, which was separate from the refinery. For as much worry as the empire had in keeping the death star a secret (including blowing up two bases to keep it a secret), that seems pretty spread out.

Was there anything special about the crystal jen erso had? Was it just a reminder of her father?

there were some recycled plot elements from earlier movies. one person holding off the storm troopers at a guard station (like han on the death star), sneaking past a planetary shield on a stolen ship using faked imperial authorization codes (like getting onto endor), death on a farm that looked a lot like luke's original farm (for the first 30 seconds i had to figure out whether we were actually on tatooine in weird lighting)

[/spoiler]

mostly nitpicking i know, i really enjoyed the movie and thought it was well done. Great visuals on the planets, good job with the inner workings of the empire and alliance (better than the new order), didn't get too tied to the characters, but decent character development.

Minor spoilers?

Little things in the movie are fantastic. The farm at the beginning. I mean how do you start a farm on a planet where there isn't anything growing? It would look exactly like that with plots in the middle of barren soil.

Jedha City, all the civilians, costumes, aliens were seamless and fantastic.

Rebel/imperial soldiers. You know how obnoxious the helmets were/are? Well if you pay attention to the rebels, there is a little antenna in Rogue one (not in others?). What it does it give a purpose to it. That its more of a computer interface communication package than just a giant 1970's helmet.

They finally introduced planetary shields visually. Not some BS invisible wall. Which brings me to ship shields. Why.Dont.They.Ever.Show.Them.Visually? Does it get way to far in the weeds on how shields function vs laser fire? Why the star destroyer shield generators are always hit first? Are they uncovered?

I am a huuuuuge geek for the ship battles in this universe and this handles is really well. It fleshes out a lot of things the movies haven't done before.

Watch the people. They don't have any real fear...just taking their sweet time. Whenever there was an attack, they did the wave. They all should have dropped at once. There was no tension.
