and the alternative is? "Hi this is __________, I heard about you guys from some dude on a message board. You were included as one of four options, but I am trying you first b/c your firm name has a nice ring to it"

I don't get anything out of it, just figured I'd offer on the off chance that someone might appreciate something more than a 3rd party list of family lawyers in the triangle.

I was hoping this was about a DWI or at least a speeding ticket.

The Divorce Deli http://www.divorcedeli.com may have a pastrami & alimony special for your family law issues available.

Happy to facilitate an introduction if interested. The Divorce Deli has a pretty decent group of swiss cheese, child support, tomato, pickles, prenups, and visitation.

From what I've been told, everyone my friend has called (3-4 family law attorneys), requires a $500 fee for an initial consultation. Is that normal for family law? I would hope some would do an initial 15-30 consult without charging $500, but perhaps the better ones do this to prevent people trying to get free advice?

I think free initial consult is pretty common. Retainers usually start at a couple thousand, from what I've seen. That doesn't get you far at all, either.

Sometimes the cream of the crop attorneys charge for consulations just because they can. They are busy as shit and sitting down and discussing someone's situation is really costing them money because they do have a ton of prospective clients lined up. It's not common, but it happens.

Charging for consults is pretty standard. Otherwise, what's to stop people from going from attorney to attorney for their "free" consult. And if you make a habit of doing free consults, you'd never get any paid work done.

That said, $500 seems pretty high for a consult. I typically see $200, enough of a deterrent to prevent being taken advantage of, but something most people can still afford.

You can also ask that if you choose to retain that attorney, that the remainder of the consult fee goes towards the retainer (if you're only there 15 minutes, the other 45 minutes of your $200 goes to future work).

the free consults are just quick conversations to figure out if its something they can help with or if its not what they do, there is no advice or anything like that

That really depends on the practice. We do free consults, but we never charge by the hour, we are contingency only, so my practice is different. Our free consults can last anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, and we really give the potential client the opportunity to ask any questions they have.

And then I've been to some paid initial sessions that cost $200 and last 15 minutes. It really just depends.

^^^ Interesting. I pretty much never hear of consultation fees down here, I just assume certain attorneys charge them. I wonder if its different in certain areas. I worked for a pretty high profile divorce attorney for a couple years and I know he never charged a consultation fee. He was more generous than most, however.

Yeah my guy is pretty high-profile, too, and nobody in his firm charges for initial consults. Might be a practice that varies with location?
