One of the best horror movies I've seen in quite some time. It doesn't rely on jump scares, and has an awesome soundtrack, reminiscent of John Carpenter. I highly recommend for horror fans.

here is a good spoiler-light review: http://io9.com/it-follows-proves-that-horror-movies-dont-need-to-be-du-1691019297

It is currently sitting at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes

Holy fuck, I saw it tonight. Money_Jones is spot on. This isn't just one of the best movies I've seen in a while; this is probably one of the best horror movies I've ever seen, period. The soundtrack is amazing and the movie itself is fucking terrifying. No jump scares, no bullshit, just straight up awesome.

There was one jump scare when she was looking at herself in the bathroom mirror and the peeping tom kid hit the window with the ball. Speaking of which it never did anything with the peeping tom kids. It showed them a few times but never went anywhere with them.

Anyway, pleased with the film and glad that it was an original idea. I wasn't scared or anything but enjoyed it. I'm a horror movie snob too.

Babadook was good, Oculus was better, I'll need to catch this somehow.

I actually had no idea this was making it to mainstream cinemas -- I saw a trailer for it maybe a month or two ago and added it to my list of "independent horror movies to watch whenever they are available" (the Babadook and Oculus were both on the list at some point). Fast forward to Thursday night and a friend of mine said it was coming out on Friday and had a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and just happened to be playing at the local theater so I was pleased.

Anyway, I would compare this to Oculus and Babadook in terms of quality. It is definitely a good movie but I liked Oculus just a little bit better (even though it was the least original of the three and the ending was kind of predictable). One thing I really enjoyed about It Follows was the "slow, impending doom" of it. It reminded me of the original Night of the Living Dead movies mixed with the Terminator.

A few things that bothered me on It Follows though. There are some minor spoilers so watch out -

- The girl didn't seem too paranoid. If I knew that monster was after me, I'd be looking behind me all the time. She just had her back turned to that main pathway at the beach without a care in the world. You'd think her back would at least be to the water.
- When it was going after Greg, why was it just beating on his bedroom door? Why not kick the door in and go after him immediately. It had no trouble kicking a hole in the door of the boat house at the lake? The only reason I could think is that maybe it was intelligent enough to realize that Greg could have jumped out a window or something if it just barged in but that may be a little far fetched.
- They didn't try too many things to stop it. Maybe it is just because the main cast were teenagers/weren't thinking clearly but after discovering that it had a physical presence and was only "invisible" I would have tried covering it paintballs or flour or something so other people could see it. It clearly could be stunned with a bullet to the head. It had no interest in other people aside from its target so from then on I'd think they would have tried dousing it in gasoline and setting it on fire, chopping its head off (machete, chainsaw, etc.), jabbing it with a taser, etc. If it is truly indestructible, I don't think it would have been difficult to trap it somehow then chain it up and bury it in concrete or something.

If all else fails, alert the government. They'd think you were crazy at first, yeah, but if you go into a police station and are like "Hey this head covered in paint won't stop following me" then physically point to it while it starts breaking their doors and stuff, they are gonna take notice.

Unfortunately, I have not seen the Babadook but I've heard great things. I did see Oculus and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, there were so many things about It Follows - the soundtrack, Detroit, the details and subtleties involving the allegory, and especially the monster - that, in my opinion, made it stand out so much more than Oculus. Something about that monster - its fixed and unchanging gaze and slow, methodical pace - was absolutely unnerving to me. I feel like the premise by itself could have sounded terrible on paper and probably would have been terrible in the wrong hands, so the fact that I enjoyed it so much is all the more impressive to me.

Not a big horror movie fan (hate jump scares) but I have gotten to watching a few thanks to some friends and well curiosity.

I absolutely loved this movie.

Spoilers.
The concept is terrifying because no matter what you do this thing will come back for you. You can delay it, you can outrun it, and you can try to pass it on briefly but eventually its coming back. That is pretty freaking terrifying. I think after a few years trying to live through it I would just commit suicide haha. Also how stupid was the friendzone guy? It was pretty funny actually and I appreciated that they put him in.

Babadook's on Netflix now, y'all. It's definitely worth your time.

It Follows > Babadook > Oculus for me.

Spoilers:

I really enjoyed the slow burn of this movie. So much of it has the audience questioning every person walking in the background. Several of Its appearances were downright unsettling (kitchen for one, bedroom for another). Paul's longing was hilariously pathetic.

Anyway, it's definitely worth the price of admission.

I really enjoyed it, thought it was very reminiscent of Carpenter...almost a little too much. Even though this movie takes place in today's time, I felt like that ereader one of the friends had, and the smartphone we saw, were very out of place. Almost everything else, even most of the cars, seem to come from the early 80's. The polaroids, the old tube tv's (and lack of new ones), the 80's ish furniture everywhere, even the things they were tossing in the pool - there was nothing modern.

I loved Detroit in this movie. Great backdrop.

so the kids had all kinds of trouble stopping the thing

but Sam and Dean would have fixed it in like 15 mins or less with something like this:

find a solid concrete room (preferably underground) with two heavy doors, once it chases you in, close both doors, and then weld and/or concrete the doors shut

then in like 500 years or so when the concrete does get a crack or whatnot, whoever is "next" should be living on a space station, lets see it walk there

The premise/concept of a monster only some people can see following you at all times is awesome. Once you have that you can make a good horror film with a low budget.

Spoilers

I thought it was odd how few adults/extras were in the movie... reminded me of Stephen King's IT as far as Kids vs a monster.

lol garage band synth chords? It did give the movie a unique feel.

Overall though I was disappointed. I feel like they could have done more with such a cool concept for a horror movie. For a horror movie I think it was great I just feel like nothing really happened... the pool scene was the climax and it was ok.

I think its less horror and more creepy. As a movie I thought it was very enjoyable though. The concept is brilliant though. No matter what you do it will come back to you eventually. Down the road it will catch up to you. You will live your whole life in paranoia because you know one day when you are out enjoying life something is going to come for you and kill you.

doubtful.

in the end the threat of death lingers just out of frame no matter what.

I use to be a horror movie buff but haven't seen anything in years because everything has gone to gore or the "jump effect". Will definitely check this one and Babadook out.

Just for understanding.....is the premise that he just walks around constantly to find you? If you drove an hour out of town, then he would have to walk that distance to get to you or can he just reappear at random locations?

^ "It" is walking at a constant pace, no teleporting/appearing right behind you. If you drive for a day you have a few days to rest. It's a constant slow paced walk in a straight line towards you, but it also displays intelligence... "Slow, not dumb".

An awesome "concept" for a horror film. Looked like a low budget film so props to whoever thought of it, I felt like they could have done more with it, but its a nice change of pace from the usual "Silence... BOOM" horror garbage.

^Yeah I think the concept is amazing. I think that's actually scarier than someone chasing you (knowing that your impending doom is slowly coming). I know every movie has plot holes, but couldn't they just move to move to Europe or something? Unless "It" is going to pull a Jesus across the Atlantic......

Not location, not like a demon possessing one person then another, just one thing that changes appearance. It works great for scenes where there is a large crowd, and everyone is constantly checking for monster.

Beautifully shot. It was too gorgeous to be scary but I don't think the end game was fear.

I never thought I would look at Detroit that way and I really loved the kid who desperately wanted to take the burden. Also, I really liked when it cut to her feet when they were on the couch. Call me a creep but women's feet super turned me on when I was 15. When he was driving around and passed up those fat hookers because they were too fat amused me. Fat Detroit hookers worse than death.

This one stuck with me, tall guy most of all. When he walked by that window at some point and walked behind Paul were my two biggest jumps.

Two funny things, why was naked old guy on the roof?? Also, monster needs to bug better avatars, ie not super creepy naked people and not an old lady on college campus. Although I guess part of the "haunting" is the terror induced, but when first guy described it, I thought it would be harder to spot.

i think some of the "avitars" were for shock value (ie maybe she will just stand there in shock until it gets her)

others were to incite fear (her friend, her dad, the kid)

and others were to actually try and get to her (the school girl with the backpack, it could have walked right up to her)

I hope they have a sequel, and maybe explain where it came from, but it would probably not be as good as the first

her friend was on a floating thing on the water, when it walked up behind her and grabbed her hair, and was also shot in the neck and just got back up

her dad was at the pool throwing stuff at her

the kid with the backpack was at the school when they were looking up the guy who gave it to her (they don't notice it, and you probably wont see it till a 2nd or 3rd viewing)

the soundtrack was great but there was nothing terrifying about it. maybe being someone that is usually reserved about horror films i need the jump scares? i don't know. but after all the hype and great reviews i was really let down by this.
