I watched it, I enjoyed it, but....

they killed Han

Lando didn't show up

no force ghosts

There was no whilhem scream (or I just missed it)

I've got a bad feeling about this....

maybe this one will be "better" after the next movies come out

there was a wilhelm scream

well, you can hear it in one of the trailers, but I did not pay enough attention to catch it in the film

There were no force ghosts, but you hear old and young Obi wan in Rey's vision, as well as a couple other folks long-dead.

so a bunch of other people also have this theory, but if this can be considered canon then i think it doesn't work

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Darth_Plagueis/Legends

george lucas also said plagueis was a muun, and i don't think the new trilogy will undo anything lucas himself said about things in his own universe that he created. snoke obviously doesn't have the facial structure of a muun.

also, for people complaining that kylo ren isn't enough of a badass, it works better that he isn't. the badass dark side guy was played out, and it's way more interesting having a villain who's kind of a loose cannon and a little rough around the edges compared to what we've seen from the likes of vader, maul, dooku/tyranus, etc. and it helps with the rivalry that's been established between kylo and general hux as they compete for snoke's approval, assuming hux survived the destruction of starkiller base. kylo is obviously prone to fucking up, which could cause him to make bad decisions out of anger and frustration in later movies. to me, that's way more appealing from a character development standpoint than some guy who is really good at killing people but ultimately just takes orders.

Now that I've seen TFA, it is even more difficult to watch the prequels. Maybe it's b/c the CGI hasn't aged well, I don't know. But the script that Lucas handed to Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman is so bad. And after seeing Daisy Ridley's performance in a Star Wars movie, it just make's Portman's performance that much crappier. Which is strange, because Portman is a good actress.

Wilhelm scream was near the beginning when Poe and Finn were escaping the hangar bay in the TIE fighter and shooting stormtroopers.

So sidenote: What is up with Kylo's lightsaber? When it is shown up close, you can see that the beam of light is a lot "rougher" than regular ones and there are sparks and shit flying off of it. You can kind of see it a little bit in this picture:

It also gives off a heat shimmer you can see clearly when he holds it at Rey's neck. I think the idea is that he hasn't been trained in the proper construction of a lightsaber, so his is a crude approximation.

From the illustration book, the lightsaber has a cracked kyber crystal in it. The crystal and blade reflect his erratic personality.

I read somewhere that his lightsaber is based off a much older design.

I was thinking maybe he wasn't trained but if he was skilled enough to kill the other Jedi apprentices that were working with Luke, I'd think he would have learned from Luke how to make one. Or at the very least, Snoke would have trained him since he seems to be the one who turned him to the dark side.

On the topic of the crystal though -- I guess since the First Order is a lot smaller than the Empire, the cracked crystal is the only one he could really get his hands on?

Probably just really rare crystals, the only one avaliable to him? And he is so hasty to be like vader. So he rushes things.

Inner nerd surfacing.

I was under the impression that lightsabers were red if they had a synthetic crystal. His crystal might be cracked because he screwed up when creating it.

What about the explanation of the design being older? Is there any truth to that?

Quote :
"Kylo Ren's lightsaber was a lightsaber constructed and utilized by Kylo Ren approximately thirty years after the Battle of Endor.[1] The lightsaber was crudely assembled based on an ancient design dating back thousands of years to the Great Scourge of Malachor, and thus featured seldom-seen crossguard blades.[3][4] A single cracked Kyber crystal, barely able to contain the weapon's power, necessitated the lateral vents which produced these crossguard quillons and gave the weapon's red plasma blades an unstable, serrated appearance.[2] Kylo wielded this weapon while working alongside the Knights of Ren and the First Order. The lightsaber was used to murder Ren's own father, and later crossed blades with the lightsaber that formerly belonged to the Skywalker's; Ren defeated and injured the stormtrooper known as Finn, but was in turn overpowered by Rey and the lightsaber was destroyed when she cut it in half."

I don't know what constitutes canon but I did find this to prove to myself that I wasn't making things up:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Synthetic_lightsaber_crystal

Quote :
"Unstable

Like compressed crystals, unstable crystals were the result of the initiate failing to accurately replicate the natural formation processes of crystals. The blades generated by unstable crystals were obviously more unstable than the norm, causing the blades generated to crackle with energy at erratic intervals, sometimes causing sparks to fly or streaks of electrical energy to run along the length. Due to the energy sparking from the blade, unstable synth-crystals caused more damage than normal when they hit enemies. However, they were much more prone to shorting out, causing the lightsaber to deactivate for a time."

I didn't notice that it got destroyed. The problem that I have with watching 3D movies is that I have big glasses and no contacts, so the 3D glasses don't sit that well on my face and I miss a lot of action.

When Rey is wrestling with Ren, she forces his lightsaber into the ground. She kicks Ren or whatever to get out of the clinch and DDTs him cuts his lightsaber in two then slashes up across his face. It's the very end of the duel.

That's a separate tab. The Canon tab is the one highlighted by default. If you click Legends, you see the Legends info.

Honestly minus the Phantom menace and the general excess use of CGI I didn't think the plots of Ep. II and III were that bad. My main problem with III was the fact that it consisted of Anakin whining/crying about Padame the whole time. I really wish Obi-wan would have saved the galaxy from 30 years of darkness but shutting him the fuck up.

Lucas should have stuck to the original idea of Anakin being tricked into
thinking the Jedi were plotting to overthrow the Republic. Instead of betraying the Jedi Order along with his friends based on some dream about his bitch dying....
I guess Lucas thought the whole saving his lover slant would appeal more to the female audience.

Well, he was tricked...tricked into saving his lover by using the dark side. The plots are ok, but the dialogue and the CGI are just unforgivable.

Yeah she got pretty aggressive at the end there when she started winning.

I actually thought she cut his hand off at first but it was his saber being cut in half. And he will probably have a noticeable scar.

I liked thay saber. But if he shows up in a future movie fully trained, a more stable saber would make for sense for his character.

my only complaint about that final action scene is that it was pretty hard to follow. Lots of rapid cutting and such. To me it looked like she cut at lest one if not both limbs off, is that true?

I actually liked that story arch in Episode III quite a bit. It offered something more than the standard good-side vs. dark-side narrative, and touched on the fact that true love might actually be the most powerful entity in the universe. Quite poetic.

They just went about the direction in a bad way, and Lucas probably needed help from other screen writers to build that story together.

Obviously having Padme meet Anakin in Episode I when he was a child and then having the same actress play his love interest when he was a teenager was a huge mistake. They should have stuck with the two coolest parts of that film, Obi-Wan and Darth Maul, and built around that and introduced Anakin to Padme when he is already a teen jedi. Then, spend the second film portraying Anakin as a bad ass Jedi that falls in love, not some wimpy cry baby.

No. Rey slices at his leg. We see that in close-up. A piece of the bottom of his robe is cut away, and you can see the glowing edge of the fabric. I can see why you'd think his leg was cut off, but the very next shot is of him in full figure staggering away from her. You see both his legs very clearly, so if the lightsaber did hit him, it was only a surface wound.

Shortly after, when they're grappling, she slices through his lightsaber. You see and hear his blade go out. She then slashes upwards, and he tries to dodge, but she cuts across his face. He falls to the ground.

We see a medium shot of Ren sitting up. The scar on his face is obvious, but if you look, both his hands are still intact.

I've seen the movie seven times. I've got this part down cold.

I'd say don't bother paying extra since we don't get the real deal 70mm IMAX version anyway. Save a few bucks on the ticket and go somewhere with reserved seating like the Raleigh Grande.

Anyone else notice how Rey's hair looked towards the end of the film, similarly bound in multiple ponytails like Amidala's during the Battle of Naboo? I can't find any decent pictures of either, but I noticed a similarity. They might be trying to point something out here.

Haha...Lucas is knocking the new Star Wars as being "retro." Even though he sounds like he doesn't want anything to do with pop-culture, he really has no idea what people actually want. Sounds mad b/c Disney didn't listen to his ideas for VII. And I think we're all glad that they didn't.

And to be honest, he didn't back in the 70's either. He had no idea SW would be such a hit.

Went to see it again tonight and some jackass lit some fireworks in the theater when the end credits started.

I don't understand people sometimes.

These weren't sparklers. It appeared to be the round kind that spin up in the air when lit. There were children around. It happened two rows behind us.
