so to partially hijack the thread, anyone know a way to make the TWC Arris modems work more reliably? One of the technicians has told me you're lucky if one lasts 3-4 years, so it might just be something that needs to routinely be replaced. But it's a pain in the ass when the modem just decides to either reset itself, or reset itself and not fully initialize for awhile.

Routers are so cheap, I wouldn't bother with a lease, I'd probably just straight up buy it.

Linksys WRTG54 whatever is the "ole reliable".

If your ISP sucks though it really won't matter what router you use. You are just polishing a turd.

I mean, some people actually use their routers for more than just distributing internet to their laptop and xbox.

HALP. I need a new router, like now. I have an Apple Time Capsule & it is circling the drain after 3ish years. Even though I'm a full apple fangirl, I'm hesitant to buy another one or an Airport Extreme. Should I be? What should I buy if not Apple? I've been so out of the loop for so long I have no idea what to look for anymore.

^Check your AppleCare warranty. It automatically extends to base stations / extremes according to my recent google search for applecare airport extreme.

Not everyone just uses their router for internet.

Exactly. It's 2015. If you're still recommending an 802.11G router in this day and age you really have no business making suggestions to anyone on the topic.

[Edited on July 17, 2015 at 11:26 PM. Reason : My router cost $200+ and I don't even currently have it hooked up to the internet at all.]

^^How am I being a douche, douche? Or for that matter a badass? I'm just saying that recommending 12 year old technology, probably isn't the smartest thing to do. I mean, yeah, not everyone is going to have use for a dual band, 802.11ac router or whatever, but at least get a 5Ghz n router if you're going to buy something these days.

The fuck do you use a router for if it isn't connected to the internet?

WiFi snob. Linksys WRTG does whatever anyone needs. Also I use a $200+ netgear router that has flashing lights so deal with it.

Now you're just trolling. It's 2015. Wouldn't think anyone ITT would need to list out all the things an intranet might be used for in a household. If you'd like us to we can though.

^^It was sarcasm. I agreed with your point. You need at least 5Ghz N these days. Especially in an apartment complex where 2.4Ghz is barely usable.

Actually, I lied when I said I had a router that wasn't hooked up to the internet in my house.

I actually have 3.

I'm sure the average person requesting a router recommendation needs a personal intranet with 4-5 routers set up, and is looking to spend as much money as possible

Best thing I did with Comcast is buy my own router and modem. Now I know they're not using my router as a public hotspot.

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/12/comcast-sued-by-customers-for-turning-routers-into-public-hotspots/

You have to actually call or go online to turn off the public wifi hotspot feature on their router. Then you don't really know if it's off or not. Wasn't going to fuck with that.
