Read some reviews and it seems almost 50/50 with people hating the AI vs recommending.

Yeah I haven't had any AI issues yet. I'm only up to ~50 people in my colony though. A lot of the complaints were around malnutrition and I think they patched that this weekend. The dev team seems to be responsive and there's already a big sub reddit for it. Regardless it's a really fun and addicting game.

I like city building games. but the one thing thats always bothered me is the inevitability of boredom kicking in. Does it keep you on your toes or give you something new to do?

I've probably only played like 6 hours but it's been constantly demanding. Monitoring, adjusting, etc. Either way for $17 if I get 20 hours of enjoyment out of it it's worth it. I think I'll be playing it a bit more than that though.
