Les Miles isnt a defensive coach. He was an O-lineman at Michigan and that is his specialty. Thats why he ran a run first offense that worked great when the opponent had inferior talent in the trenches.

He refused to adapt his offense and year after year the program declined over the past 5 years while the offensive game has evolved. Hes been through 4 or 5 OCs with the same lackluster offense for most years since about 2008 and has never been able to develop a QB in that time. LSU has produced pro bowl level NFL offensive talent at the skill positions but has accomplished the minimum with those players in college. Miles is 4-5 in his last 9, 2-4 in his last 6 SEC games.

Any school that hires Miles is going to take a step back unless they have top 3 talent.

He is a great recruiter ( at a school with a ton of local talent) and a great man. But he has always been a terrible in game coach. There are dozens of instances of him mismanaging the clock and he is relatively clueless in the moment.
He is the butt of many a joke amongst knowledgable SEC fans due to his numerous in game gaffes

The game has passed him by, or he needs a long break from coaching

Youre forgetting Jeremy Hill who had 97 yards and 2 TDs today vs Denver

With a QB who is on an NFL roster. (He was a transfer from UGA, a transfer is the only way Miles can have a successful QB)

I agree with Earl. Miles would be a bad fit here. He'd be like Sidney Lowe.

The only coach to win a consensus national championship with more than 1 loss.

So hes not as good as guys like Gene Chizik and Larry Coker.

You know Coker doesnt have a job right now after being unsuccessful at UTSA, bet theres still some tread on the tires left.

Chizik might be setting our sights too high

Wait are you guys seriously arguing against Les Miles????

Dave fucking Doeren is our coach, what the fuck is wrong with you???

How in the hell could you not want Miles? He won at Oklahoma State too. He is 141-55 with a NATIONAL TITLE.

[Edited on September 25, 2016 at 11:19 PM. Reason : Miles couldn't beat Saban, our coach's best win is over UCF]

Would take Les Miles in a heartbeat. Don't think he would come here though unless we could just find a way to dump money all over him.

Yeah there would be some WTF losses, but we would hopefully regain that ability to actually punch above our weight class again and actually steal a win against a ranked opponent.

Have no delusions about a national championship here.

Major Applewhite took the Houston job. Still enjoy the memories of that State win over UT when asshole white was the qb.

Kiffin to USF or Houston seems like a lot lower than what he could land. Not sure what better will be open, but neither of those seems better than continuing as OC at 'Bama till a better option came around.

i think if Kiffin wanted to be a HC again he's smart to take a mid major job this time around as opposed to going for another higher level. he hasn't exactly been a successful head coach, so i think big program wouldn't take him until he's proven himself as HC. imo, this is probably his best path getting a high major HC job again. his reputation has improved drastically since he took the Bama OC job. but he still has no good track record as a HC and most major programs would be taking a risk by hiring him.

So he can take a mid-major job and fail leaving millions on the table(compared to what a big school could pay) or if he succeeds then hope to get a big job after? Why would he waste the time with the middle step? For his own self development? Maybe but financially dumb move and not a needed step.

Or he can just take a bigger high paying job because his name is enough that nobody really cares about his past anymore and he would be a splashy hire and if he fails he'll just go back to being an OC and if he succeeds he doesn't have to change jobs again. Either he has learned from past mistakes and he can do it or he can't at the highest level, going to a mid-major is a dumb financial move even if it is probably where he should be based on his true overall resume and results, it just isn't how college football works. I don't think anyone at this point is caring about what he did at Tenn or USC or Oakland, just that he is the OC at 'Bama and similar to Kirby everyone wants a piece of what they are doing and the Saban tree.

Question just is there a higher level job going to be open, does he settle for a lower job because he wants out of Alabama, or does he use this to negotiate a bigger contract at Alabama and just wait for the job he wants. If he didn't take Houston probably shows he has no interest in that level of a program because it is the best you'll find right now based recent performance and potential recruiting base. I find it hard to believe any job opening in the country wouldn't have him on their short list.

i mean....is there any evidence a high major program would take a chance on Kiffin at this point?

LSU was trying to poach him from Bama as an OC, right? but of the P5 openings this time around, which ones was he seriously considered for?

You said "mid major" as in non-P5 schools. Now saying "high major." So I have no idea which level of school you are actually talking about because when I see "mid major" I think non-P5 school. I don't know what a high major is.

But my point still stands as he'll be in line for a job at a major D1 P5 school if he wants it. Just depends what opens up. Right now only one in that range was Oregon and I don't think that was a good fit for either and both sides probably knew that.

With strong taking the USF job, kiffin talking to FAU, im a bit depressed that we stuck with doeren another year. I'd immediately take either over doeren and our program (laughs) is better than these

Must have been so sick of Saban to take that job. Still feel like if he waited around a bigger opportunity would have come up simply because of the 'Bama connection and the hype surrounding his hire for a school looking to make boosters/fans happy. Don't get me wrong, it is the right move for Kiffin and where he should be based on his actual performance, just doesn't seem like that is how these things usually play out. Surprised but good for FAU.

guess it just depends how ADs and boosters who have much say view him. he flamed out pretty hard at all of his HC gigs so far and is essentially 0 for 3 as a HC. but then again, his reputation obviously has improved greatly since joining the Bama staff. so i'm not sure exactly how to view him. truthfully, he was probably in over his head at his first few HC jobs and simply wasn't ready for those jobs. but does his success at Bama mean he's learned from his mistakes and is back on track to be a great coach? or do boosters and ADs think he still has to "prove it" before taking a chance on him? if FAU is the best he could do, then the latter is probably the case.

Recruiting Florida just got a lot tougher. I realize Florida has a shit ton of recruits, but when the lower tier schools like USF and FSU have coaches of that caliber it makes it a lot tougher to get good kids from there.

FSU - Jimbo
UF - McElwain
Miami - Richt
USF - Strong
FIU - Butch
FAU - Lane
UCF - Scott Frost

Pretty impressive. Doubt many recruits leave the state. Almost all of these were upgrade hires.

Kiffin apparently is in the middle of a divorce. His soon to be ex-wife looks like she is from Florida and her family has roots there. Could be that he picked whatever D1 school he could get in Florida to be closer to his kids after the split.

So PJ Fleck to Minnesota. I figured he could have held out for a better job next year, but whatever. It's a good fit for him geographically and he gets to play in the shitty Big Ten division.

yeah that must be a geographical thing with him. lotta people said he wanted to stay at WMU while his kids were in school, i think. so maybe geography played a big role there. because he could've had better job offers.
