Releases this Friday (Feb 5th)

Review Thread on Reddit (all the scores):
https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/43oc1z/xcom_2_review_thread/

Biggest features include fully randomized maps, much more soldier customization, mod support from the get go (the guys that did the Long War mod are already pumping out content to be ready by release), and a bunch of other stuff.

Excited about this but may snag it on a steam sale in a few months. First game was really solid.

Can confirm, lost my whole squad the first mission

Lost more than a few full squads already and I've only played a couple hours.

The whole "all overwatch, all the time" strategy doesn't fly anymore

I like the sound of that, the mission part of the first one seemed too easy the hardest part was not losing the funding of any countries by timing your satellites and stuff correct. The hostage type missions where you save civilians were the hardest probably.

So this is my first ever XCOM game. The turned based aspect isn't foreign to me but the XCOM specific stuff like base building, time passage, upgrades, etc are all learning experiences for me.

I chose the second to hardest difficulty.

I am two missions in; about to start the third.

Gripes/Clarifications:

1: Camera. My only casualty so far happened because I put a guy on overwatch next to a door. Enemy outside moved, my guy stood up shot out a window I didn't know was there, missed, and then was shot and killed by the enemy he just missed. No camera orientation I could chose would show me that side of the building to where I could see that there was a window there; it was always transparent or blocked by other environment objects. Maybe changing the camera's Z axis location would fix this? I haven't tried as I just learned you could do this.

2. Environment. In the second mission specifically there is a parking lot with vehicles. Some vehicles offer cover and you can even get in them; Others, a tank looking thing in particular, offered no cover. You could not flank it and characters clip into it and shoot through it with zero accuracy penalty, you couldn't set it on fire, or blow it up. Is there a way to tell what parts of the environment are effectively not there?

3. Save games. I know you can make your own saves; which I plan to do from here on out but I loaded an auto save prior to my soldiers death; didn't like the way it went, loaded the same auto save and the game point it loaded was after my soldier died. Huh? Save scumming doesn't feel good but I don't mind doing it while I am learning the mechanics/rules of the game.

4. Overwatch. This seems powerful, but is there a way to tell the area of its impact? I find that half the time I expect an enemy to take fire from my overwatch soldiers nothing happens and other times ill be puzzled as to why a soldier shoots at a specific enemy when they move. And in a more broad sense: is there any way to tell the line of fire of an enemy or friendly? It feels like its probably something you get a feel for the more you play but line of sight seems like a very ethereal concept in this game.

SPOILER

Is there a way to get through the 'tutorial' section where you recover the commander without losing anyone?

your really doing yourself a disservice by not playing XCOM Enemy Unknown, then XCOM Enemy Within.

How the hell am I supposed to EVAC with this VIP when the EVAC zone is on top of a building with no stairs to the roof, and I can't climb ladders while carrying this dude?

You should be able to carry people up drain-pipes, vines, and ladders. It's pretty much required in one of the story missions, so maybe it was another issue? I've found that it's not super clear which building feature IS climbable.

Beat the campaign on Veteran yesterday. Very solid game. Feels like they left a lot of room to add in additional content.

make sure you dont have a dude standing at the top of the ladder/pipe blocking access to the roof.

finally beat xcom 2

I found 2xgrandiers and 2xPSI troops were OP as fuck.

Game felt pretty empty to me after first two months. Once i got warden armor and plasma weps, it was pretty stale until the PSI troops were leveled all the way.

XPAC should be good when it hits.

I played xcom2 with all the dlc, but stopped after I killed all the chosen. It just got boring after that.
