About to dive into this...anyone played yet?
http://store.steampowered.com/app/427520/
It's getting ridiculous ratings (only 7 negative reviews out of 1500 today).

Just got it. Sorta like a minecraft/sim city vs Zerg, lots of depth. So far it's fun 2/28/2016 10:24:07 PM |

Played a good 12 hours this weekend. This game is ridiculously addictive and fun. Very complex and incredibly satisfying when you get some automated efficiently. I'm planning on starting over to work a little better on design. Right now my base is more of the "spaghetti approach" and very disorganized.
Also I learned you want to always have your belts full to show you the load and make sure production isn't resource constrained (production is always > demand of a resource). 3/7/2016 12:51:22 PM |

I was addicted for quite awhile. then it just fell off my radar. I kinda wish I had waited to get so deep into the game until later, when multiplayer was finally a thing. 5/21/2016 3:31:58 PM |

big update out 0.15
they made the transition to late game much more streamline now by adding military science. 4/29/2017 10:47:53 PM |

^ not really. There's "missions" that walk you through the first couple of hours of the game but it wasn't helpful for late game stuff. There's a demo on their website that runs you through the first hour or so of gameplay that's free. I tried that and purchased the full game on the same day. 5/2/2017 10:30:11 AM |

Dive right in and start playing. I enjoyed being a noob at it.
After about 5 hours of play instarted watching youtube videos and seeing designs/strats and adapting those.
Im fan of the main bus system. I recommend negative root youtube channell. 5/2/2017 10:47:11 AM |

I reiterate, fuck you all.
That said, anyone have a good tutorial on planning and layout for a high throughput factory? I'm sitting on a pile of spaghetti that I didn't build big enough. I'm particularly interested in how to handle trains bringing in raw and intermediate products and planning material routing so things end up where you'll need then and not 5 chunks away. 5/26/2017 12:25:37 PM |

This game is the fucking devil. If you plan on high throughput at the begining the game itself will go much faster.
Always leave room for belts to go underneath your buildings/material lanes. Never more than 4 belts together as thats the limit of belts. 4 tiles.
I've looked up a main bus design. Basically have 4 iron plate lines 2 circuits 2 steel 2 copper through the center of base. Have parallel branches coming off of main bus perpendicular. Leave space at end of branches for any expansion you'll need. Basically never build at the end of any process/branch. Always leave yourself 3 x 3 square upgrading your forges to electric. Oil is a giant pain in the ass. I'm thinking about getting the oil tanker mod. Using barrels is unnecessary. And you can't keep all your oil stations full of empty barrels if your oil train has more than 2 stops. Or at least I haven't figured away to store them. Use blueprints for your train stops. It will include your design to load, store, track, train stop etc. It should work for all ore stops. Get a blue print for a square of solar panels, capacitors, electric connections for easy duplication. Use drones to make one off specific things you need to have around. Where you have extra space. Things like shotgun ammo, solar panels, engines etc.
The thing for me is that if you want to have high volume through put you need to plan on something like 40 research buildings. And expect to support that. Without backing out all the math to project all the production you'll need, it can be very time consuming to constantly improve various areas of the plant where you find bottlenecks. Oil being the giant pain in the ass. Did I mention that?
In my current game, I'm basically just trying to upgrade my throughput with extra trains bringing in ore from all over the place.
There is so much more to this game. Look up tutorials on power generation etc. When you realize how much math is going on behind the scenes for fluid calculations its amazing. Watching your base having rolling blackouts because of negative feedback loops is awesome! (Low power=>Slower coal into boilers=>lower power output=>repeat.)
Its even possible to create a backup power station that kicks on in the event of low power. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJS1Z-t05QA
Fuck this games endless possibility.
And when you're done with one play through you want to play again with all the things you've learned the previous time.
If you start a game change the ore settings to highest density so you don't have to leap frog your harvesting around. Once you prove you can do it a couple times its not really value added.

Are you sure your playing 0.15x Factorio? They introduced an oil tank for the train. You pump oil into it.
my next build will be the 2xFour Main bus setup. https://youtu.be/ZbCk1SgTD6g?list=PL-7ICWbZUDjnPpd14VeNYmYXQY3n9Far0&t=925
You essentially shove everything you can at the top and branch off the main. At some point you can re-up the mainbus later on with trains mid way down, just have them feed in.5/26/2017 8:17:52 PM |

And your missing out on nuclear. 5/27/2017 7:20:52 PM |
BEU All American 12512 Posts user info edit post |
Holy dear god
Pumps were 1 x 2 tiles, the update from 14=>15 made them 1x3 tiles. So none of your pumps work if you load an old game.
The boilers are HUGE now. My butthole clinched so hard when I realized I wasn't making any steam. I had to redo entire steam engine setup. Luckily I had stored steam in tanks and enough solar to make the basic functions of the base work.
Also. WTF they completely changed whats needed to make blue and purple science packs.
Overhauling base gives me something to do, but I have no idea what will happen if I get everything up and running again. I don't know if the ratios of water pump to boiler to steam engine are still the same for performance. And to get nuclear I need to get research lines fixed.

You can have Steam give you the 0.15 updates: Steam>Factorio>Right Click>Properties>Betas tab>Select 0.15.x from the drop down 6/13/2017 12:47:51 PM |

I still haven't gotten all the research done because of the difference in versions. How do you get the white research packs? I haven't seen it as a thing to build either in a factory or on my person.
Not sure how much output I really want to get to. You could try to maximize efficiency of your base. Take out extra unnecessary items. Convert to 100% logistic drones? 6/16/2017 7:23:13 AM |
