Your thoughts friends on how inexpensive one could accomplish this.
12 foot tandem sit on top blow molded kayak while making minimal mounts to actual boat.
Outriggers. Good for a kayak regardless of sailing. Need adequate support (PVC)? Lashed or mechanically fastened to pontoon of foam or container.
Mast and mounting. Aluminium tubing maybe 1" set in a plywood box lashed to the boat. Guy wires from mast down to boat.
Boom. Ridged metal tubing or PVC?
Sail. Ripstop nylon. Cut a kids parachute down to sail design and sew on fasteners? Use stock from fabric store? Depends on sail shape.
Rudder and daggerboard? 3/15/2016 4:03:27 PM |

yeah I think the boom/centerboard will be the toughest part of this project. why not just get an old sunfish or something? just a quick glance on craigslist pulls a boat up for $550 that I'm sure you could haggle down. 3/20/2016 2:40:01 PM |

You could potentially put a sail on kayak, but it likely wouldn't sail worth a damn. The forces from the sail/rigging/rudder are not insignificant, it will be difficult to mount them to the kayak in any permanent fashion (as in it will stay in place long enough for you sail). Even in fiberglass boats, most of the hardware is mounted through the surface into a block of wood or other material below.
Sailboats are pretty cheap, or if you want to build a boat, buy the plans and build a sailboat from scratch.
Then sell me your tandem. 3/20/2016 3:44:38 PM |
