^ that’s a plausible way out

He does it. Congress passed a clean spending bill.

Courts immediately block whatever dictate he uses to get the military to build a wall.

Gets tied up in court, eventually dropped, everyone’s happy

Still banging the national emergency drum.

Meanwhile, Lindsay Graham is looking for someone not crazy to negotiate with. Someone who won't ask the administration to formally document how they want to spend the wall money.

networks deciding if they'll air a live anti-immigrant screed by Trump during primetime

I think they'll cave and do it, even though in 2014 supposedly they told Obama he couldn't do it

If the networks cave, assuming no impeachment, it's going to be a bad sign for 2020.

I wonder if the screed will include Trump's threatened state of emergency or will it just be twenty minutes of him bitching and lying.

^^^^ it's supposed to be an 8 minute speech, so im thinking the 20 minutes includes rebuttal/commenting.

I think it'll be the state of emergency to build a border wall. Trump is desperate and frenzied and this would be a consistent move for him. It also paves the way for the gov to be reopened since they don't have to negotiate around funding a border wall anymore.

Ahead of this address, I can't help but recall the reports that I read that suggest that President Trump has a bit of an amphetamine addiction. I wonder if we'll see any signs of it tonight.

The hell was up with his loud ass breathing? I realize they had to sit his ass down and try to teach him how to read to an audience, but man. 1) Read until you're almost out of breath, ignoring pacing or anything else. 2) Close mouth. 2) Inhale as loud as you can through your nose. 3) Repeat

Yea, I'm being a bit petty, but it was incredibly awkward.

Whose idea was this "address," anyway? A short, poorly-delivered prime time interruption that just rehashes the same easily-corrected lies he spews in all of his other venues, adding nothing? Was the plan really that this would sway enough people to action that they would...uh...I don't even know what they were supposed to do. The midterms happened about 15 minutes ago. It's not like hollering at their congressmen was going to do much.

In the past, at least you could say that the son of a bitch had some sense for political theater. This thing was just pathetic. I would bet my last dime that, when he asked for this air time, he fully intended to declare a national emergency - and for once his lickspittles grew enough of a spine to talk him out of it. So since he didn't have his "big reveal" (of an unconstitutional quasi-dictatorial coup), he had to blather on about "hearts and souls" and whatever the fuck.

If it's not that, then he's seriously unraveling even from his usual standards of what can only be called, paradoxically, juvenile senility.

Even Fox News is having a hard time talking up his speech; from their website, it looks like far more coverage is going towards trying to mock the Pelosi/Schumer response.

It was, perhaps, some of the dumbest 15 minutes of television I think I have ever seen. Totally embarassing for Trump, even if Pelosi/Shumer looked like fools too. It reminded me of a high school skit you had like two periods of class to practice and present to the class.

Since the wall will never be built anyway because it's stupid and impractical, I'd be all for a deal that trades "wall" funding for substantive immigration reform. Not scraps like permanent legal status for DACA recipients or other things Trump has revoked via executive action, but actual citizenship for DREAMers and massive reforms to make legal immigration easier. Of course, Presidents Miller and Limbaugh never accept it because it directly counter their entire reason for wanting a wall: keeping the browns out.

^ That is an interesting article idea, citizenship for dreamers, reduce wait times for green card, visa, etc with 5 billion to hire more people to process requests or whatever is making it 10-20 years to legally immigrate. Also 5 billion for a drone fleet over the border to show how stupid a wall is compare to a fleet of drones..

^,^^

I’m surprised the Dems haven’t publicly offered that yet. Raise cap in legal immigration, drastically reduce processing time, grant permanent status to all the people trump removed temporary status from, legal pathway for dreamers, legal pathway for students who grew up here...

It would show the gop is really just interested in keeping brown people out.

Rather than this transparent bullshit about terrorists/drugs/whatever

I do think though there’s plenty of democrats who don’t want brown people either, which is why they are happy with undocumented immigrants stuck as a migrant worker underclass, or exploitable under the table labor.

Democrats offered to deal several times over the past two years. Trump always said no or reneged.

Trump had two years of a Republican Congress.

Now, at the end of all that, Trump has shut the government down because he's not getting all he wants while offering nothing in return.

Democrats shouldn't offer him shit.

DACA alone for $25B of wall funding was a bad deal for the country though... Trump was REALLY dumb not to jump at this. Just shows how motivated they are by racism I think.

All the more reason not to give in to his hostage taking.

Democrats need to be out there banging the "Where's McConnell?" drum. What Trump signs or doesn't sign is the White House's problem, not the Senate's.

^^ agreed. Mitch isn't doing it because he doesn't want to force further isolation of Trump. It's very clear that it is party before country for him.

I also like how Trump is now saying he "obviously didn't say Mexico would pay for the wall". Unnerving how much of his base believes that statement and feels that talking point is further example of media bias.

2 big stores re Trump came out the past 2 days

1) FBI was concerned Trump was both a national security threat, and criminal activity related to collusion

2) In one of Trump's meetings with Putin, he took the interpreters notes from them, and told them not to discuss the meeting with even Trump's own advisors and cabinet

This all happened around when Trump publicly bragged to the Russians that firing Comey took the pressure of the investigations off of him.

Newsweek is reporting on a draft mueller report saying Trump helped Putin destabilize american government, but not sure if the report says this was unwittingly or not.

Seems like there's been an uptick in Trump collusion news the past few days... could be media efforts to push Trump to resolve the shutdown, or could maybe signal even more news in the pipeline. Either way, McConnell seems to be at the point of diminishing returns on defending Trump on the shutdown to me.

Yeah, from the beginning he's been pretty quiet on the shutdown, and happy to pass the buck to the President. I don't think that's Mueller-related, though. McConnell is a fucking snake, but he's clever, he's been around forever, and he's a survivor. He knew there was no upside to coming out strong for Trump on this one, especially after Trump so loudly took the blame for it.

I've long since caring what Mueller finds. He could have a video of Donald on his knees, sucking Putin dry, and it wouldn't make a difference for most of the Trumpists. Since those Trumpists still dominate GOP primaries, Republican legislators won't take strong action against him. The rabble will parrot Fox News lines about how the findings aren't that bad, or how the FBI can't be trusted (or both), the gutless worms in the Republican caucuses in the capitol will make vague noises of discontent without doing anything, and we'll all keep getting goose-stepped into 2020. At which point we just have to hope that Trump is still so caked in shit that the non-primary-voter types show up and vote for whatever uninspired Democrat survives the battle royale. Which is pretty much where we are now, pre-report.

Of course, I might start caring again if Donald somehow fails to pardon everybody thoroughly enough, and the report leaves open the possibility of sending him and his family to prison next term.
