The announcers on TV started to make a pretty big deal out of the lights being turned on for the first time ever at a Martinsville race. I'm pretty sure NASCAR wanted it to end under the lights. If that is the case then they just need to have a Friday/Saturday weekend and have 2 night races.

if you have a night race at martinsville in late october, there won't be any less fans than were there for the race this year. same goes for the spring race. it wouldn't be an issue.

what hilljack is gonna read an article about night racing at martinsville and be like "nah, bo, it'll be cold the last week of october. i'll stay home and sit in my deer stand instead"?

high school football, hay rides, hunting, ice fishing. all shit you do outside in the cold with no issues. rednecks don't mind putting on some long handles or coveralls and hanging out with their brethren in the cold. not to mention that you can bring in enough beer (and liquor if you're the least bit creative) to keep you warm.

Think the attendance problem is more the lack of fan draws in the driver lineup than the time the race starts. Has anyone thought about for next year who all of Junior's fans are going to gravitate to? One other reason that auto racing is not some sport like basketball or football: it's an individual sport, people retire, this is not N.C. State or the Yankees where they will always be there.
