Seems like it shouldn't have taken long for someone to refuse his help and report him. Who would need or even want that kind of help beating Wake?

so what's his motivation? that clawson didn't retain him on the staff? seems crazy 12/14/2016 7:43:03 AM |

Yeah, being mad that you weren't retained is crazy. Especially considering how often that happens in the coaching world.
I won't be the least bit surprised if it comes out that he was betting against Wake Forest in these games. 12/14/2016 7:56:16 AM |

Well Wake was 19-17 against the spread, so if he was betting, it wasn't helping really. 12/14/2016 10:02:52 AM |

And now he'll never get another coaching job.
Assistants though get hired and fired at will pretty often. It wouldn't surprise me if more than a few more vindictive types out there look to share this info. It's not like the college football coaches' fraternity is full of honorable people.

If the NCAA does not, I expect the ACC to penalize Louisville for sure.

why should UL be punished because somebody from the other team gave them info? i'm not talking about what's ethically right or wrong...but, what rules was UL breaking where they should be punished? other teams were contacted by wake as well...y'all saying UL should be punished because they lied about it at first?
i mean...yeah that's shady for UL to lie about it. but i don't think they deserve any punishment. for those that think they should be punished, what is a reasonable form of punishment?
ethically, UL should've probably reported this to Wake's AD and/or coaching staff. but as far as NCAA violations...i don't see how somebody giving them plays could possibly be a violation or something in need of punishment. they didn't steal the plays, they didn't do anything illegal to obtain them...they were literally handed over to them by the opposition.

I don't see the NCAA doing anything to Louisville, but the ACC should considering the emphasis they place on sportsmanship. 12/15/2016 3:19:29 PM |

^i get what you're saying about that. but wake's radio guy is the one at fault here, not UL in my opinion. obviously you can't punish wake football for something their radio announcer did, especially when it was not to wake's benefit. but i don't necessarily see why UL should be punished by the ACC either. unless it comes to light that there were payments made for the information or something along those lines, then this is just an unfortunate scenario where a 3rd party interfered and did something obviously wrong. it's a very weird situation, but i just don't think you can hand down any kind of punishment here. are you punishing UL because they lied about it or because they didn't report it in the first place?
unless the NCAA wanted to give the radio guy (who was formerly on staff, so may want to be a coach in the future) a show-cause or something like that. 12/15/2016 3:31:01 PM |

VT now saying somebody on their staff was given the information as well in 2014 (the infamous 0-0 OT game, iirc) although they say there is "no indication" the information was given to the rest of the staff/used by the staff. 12/15/2016 3:41:46 PM |

The people given the info probably should've notified someone (say their school's athletic director) as soon as practical, who would've notified either Wake Forest, the ACC, or both. While I don't have a high opinion of college coaches, there has to be a few out there that are honest and would do the right thing.
(Dmspack, it's a rough equivalent to insider trading.)
No punishment will be handed out because the ACC and its schools don't know how many schools this guy gave info to.

^right. that's my point, mostly. UL, from a moral standpoint, should have informed Wake's athletic department or staff that this was going on after they received the information. but because UL wasn't (by any indication so far) seeking this info out on their own, paying for it, or anything like that...and because, like you say, you can't really tell how many other schools Wake's radio guy contacted. so it's hard to punish UL for the actions of Wake's radio man. 12/16/2016 12:33:37 PM |

at fault for what? in terms of deserving a punishment, i mean. sure, we agree that it would be unethical and the "right" thing to do would have been to immediately report this. and initially lying about it is not a good look. but they wouldn't have been breaking any NCAA or ACC rules by using the information.12/16/2016 1:20:58 PM |

Wake people found certain empty-backfield plays of theirs at the Louisville facility, and so therefore they didn't run those plays in the game since they suspected they were compromised. So Louisville might have gameplanned for those plays, but Wake never ran the plays.

right.
here's what clawson said on Mike & Mike this morning
Quote : | ""And the day of the game we got there about an hour before, and the equipment manager presented our offensive coordinator with the cards and said, 'I don't think this is any big deal,' just a lot of stuff that we do normally. And our coordinator flipped through it and there was very, very detailed information there. Formations that we had never run, alignments, even some of it was even some empty sets we had never run before, but some of it was even sets we had run but we had flipped personnel." Clawson then went on to detail why the team had new things designed for the game, and how players felt about not running the plays they'd worked on in practice all week. "Louisville is an excellent football team, and it was a game that we felt, in order to score points, we had to have some wrinkles in," Clawson said. "And all of those wrinkles were right in front of us. And at that point, we knew we had been compromised, and as a result, a lot of those things we had prepared, we couldn't run because we knew they had it. "After the game our players were upset. They wanted to know why did we work on all these things and not use them. They felt we had not given them the best opportunity to win the game. So we had a team meeting and told them something was compromised, we're not sure how. At that point it triggered an investigation. We did not want that out. We did not want that leaked because that compromised our own investigation of trying to find out what had happened, and how it happened."" |

probably because he was one of the first people on their sideline that day...would make sense to me that the equipment managers would be out there setting things up before the team and coaches got on the field. 12/16/2016 3:31:50 PM |

^^if you read that, it's pretty clear that the managers found stuff on the sideline that Louisville inadvertently left after their walkthrough which had WF plays that they had installed specifically the Louisville game and hadn't used before. 12/16/2016 5:49:02 PM |
