Yeah not crazy about opening against FSU in ACC play but I'll take that any day of the week over some of the alternatives.

Pitt is a decent matchup across divisions, glad we don't have to play VT or Miami.

^ I'll take a late road stretch at WFU and BC rather than a cluster of FSU, Clemson, Louisville back to back any day.

Louisville is playing Kent St and Murray St the two weeks before our short week game.

We'll still win though

Short week before Louisville hurts.
Bye week before @ND isn't exactly ideal, would prefer it before the Clemson game.
Syracuse sandwiched between @FSU and Louisville is tough too.
Would be nice to close-out the season winning those last 3 games that all seem winnable on paper at this point.

OL is fairly solid/experienced, Adams is a future NFL starter. Will be interesting to see how we hold up losing Scelfo though, and will be important we stay healthy.

Hard not to appreciate how much better our OL and DL have been getting under Doeren.

^With that being said, I'm worried that even if Doeren does have a solid year and stay around a few more seasons, bigger programs will certainly pay attention to what Nielsen and Ledford are doing here. Ledford had great OL's at App State and in one year turned out a really nice OL for us.

Another good year with a dominant OL and DL and those 2 will get some looks, Nielsen is already getting plenty of looks.

when will we play Duke again? they should make it so we are at least playing every other year or something.

are there any rules stopping us from scheduling Duke on our own?

Yeah who gives a shit about conference games, especially one against the defending national champions and the current Heisman trophy winner (since one of those you obviously don't give a shit about). This is a pretty typical home slate of games.

I know there has been a push to actually make Duke a yearly OOC game like some other teams have started doing, but I'm not sure how serious those discussions were.

Would be weird playing Duke and it not counting towards conference record.

i get what you're saying. but, imo, it can only be a good thing if our assistants are doing so well that big time programs want to hire them away or they get offers to be head coaches from other programs. that means we, as a program, are doing well. which is the goal. yes it would be...unfortunate, i guess is the right word, to have great assistants on staff and then have to replace them. but i'd take that over the alternative every day without question. it's kinda like saying "i hope we're pretty good, but not too good to get noticed".

for ^^, from that link above...if you're gonna shit on him for Texas Tech's defense, might as well give him credit for his other coaching stops:

Quote :
"During Patrick’s two seasons at North Texas (2014-15), the Mean Grean combined for 52 sacks as the program regularly ranked among the top Conference USA pass rushing units. North Texas totaled 33 sacks alone in Patrick’s first season, which tied for fifth-most in school history.

The Mean Green closed the 2014 season ranked No. 25 nationally in team sacks per game (2.75) and among the nation’s top-50 units in total defense."

Quote :
"Under Patrick, USF regularly rated among the nation’s top defenses as the Bulls finished among the NCAA’s top-25 units in total defense four times. The Bulls also ranked among the nation’s top-25 three times in team tackles for a loss (2010-11 and 2013) and as high as fourth in total sacks (2011).

In addition to his coaching duties, Patrick was also honored for his work on the recruiting trail as Rivals named him one of the nation’s top-25 recruiters in 2009, as well as the top recruiter in the Big East Conference. The recognition came after USF signed four four-star recruits, including Pierre-Paul, on National Signing Day.
"

TT's D has been shit long before he was on staff...i have no clue if he's a good hire, but TT's D last year isn't really an indication one way or the other as to his coaching ability.

can't blame Nielsen for going to the NFL...seemed like he was a fairly hot commodity, but obviously hate to see him go.

^That's how every position coach is. Trying to work their way up and gain more responsibility. He worked his way up from coaching just DE's, to DT's, to the entire DL. So I think he could be content for a while with something like we did for Nielsen where we make him DL Coach and Running Game Coordinator.

He'll be here for at least 2-3 years as long as Doeren is here and still wants him here.

It was obvious that Nielsen was going to get bigger and better offers each year, I think Ledford will be one that garners a ton of attention if we have another stout OL performance this season.

Ya, but how much of that was ledford and how much was him arriving when we had a pretty good/established O-line already? I think your right b/c of his NFL pedigree though.

^^He had top 10 OL's at App State and then he comes here and our OL takes a huge jump despite losing it's best player(Thuney) and replacing another starter(albeit with a great grad transfer).

They'll see 2 top 10 OLs, then the improvement in our OL rankings from the year before him to his first year. Now he's returning 4 starters and we have back-ups with starter experience, so if we can find a C and stay fairly healthy, no reason to think he won't just pad his resume again this season.

LETS START THIS MOTHERFUCKING HYPE MACHINE!~!!!!

Quote :
"This week, we’re examining each ACC team’s schedule, identifying the biggest games, looming upsets and most grueling stretches for each.

Next up: NC State Wolfpack

A win over rival North Carolina in the regular-season finale may have saved Dave Doeren’s job last year, but in 2017, he’s got a team that looks ready to seriously contend. After dropping three big games by a touchdown or less in 2016, this year’s schedule is less about finding the easy wins and more about the Wolfpack pulling off the difficult ones.

Toughest three-game stretch: Oct. 28-Nov. 11 (at Notre Dame, vs. Clemson, at Boston College)

Simply maneuvering the loaded ACC Atlantic this year won’t be easy, and those dates against Clemson and BC could be daunting. But last season, NC State came within a chip-shot field goal of knocking off the eventual champion Tigers in Death Valley, so there’s hope. Still, it took a monsoon for NC State to get by Notre Dame last year, and now the Wolfpack must travel to South Bend. Meanwhile, BC already toppled NC State last year, and this appears to be an improved Eagles team.

Potential trap game: Sept. 30 vs. Syracuse

NC State nearly knocked off Florida State last year and the Seminoles figure to be one of its biggest tests this year. Two weeks later is a date with Lamar Jackson and Louisville, an offense that left the Wolfpack shell-shocked last season. Then, stuck in the middle of the two, is Syracuse. Think that one’s a gimme? Look at what the Orange did to Virginia Tech last season, and it’s clear that Dino Babers’ crew isn’t going to make things easy on anyone.

Swing game: Oct. 14 at Pittsburgh

Talk about a game for the big boys in the trenches. NC State’s dominant defensive line vs. Pitt’s power run game. It should be fun. And if the Wolfpack pull off a win on the road, it also could be a critical turning point in the season. A bye week follows, with Notre Dame and Clemson on the horizon. Will NC State go into its toughest stretch riding high or stumbling to the finish line?

Projected W-L: Realistically, this is probably an 8-4 team thanks to the brutality of life in the Atlantic. But this feels like NC State could be nearing a tipping point, too. Let’s say the Wolfpack win their first three (they should) and pull the upset in Tallahassee. What then? Is 10-2 or 11-1 out of the picture? There’s a long way to go before we get to that point, and NC State is as likely to start 2-2 as 4-0, so for now, we’ll say we’re cautiously optimistic about the Wolfpack’s season."

8-4 with a win over either Clemson, FSU, or UL, then that will be a good season.

10 wins is a little too optimistic. I mean if we still had Dayes with this team, I'd say 8-9 wins is a really solid possibility. Little worried our offense is going to come out flat against USC in week 1 trying to break in a new running game and their D is quite good.

Beating USC in that first game is going to be really important.

I think Finley made the OL look a little better than they were. You can say what you want about his arm strength, but he definitely gets rid of the ball quicker than Jacoby. Seems much more decisive too.

Anyway, I agree winning that USC game is huge. They might not be good, but their defense can typically fly. I still remember those two eggs our offense laid against USC a few years ago (and that was with RW at QB). They just looked so much more athletic than us.

If we look good offensively against them, I'll feel much better about the season as a whole.

while we're listing RBs...Dakwa Nichols has looked solid in limited action throughout his career. i'm thinking we'll likely do more RB by committee next year, and not have one workhorse like we did with Dayes. but all 3 RBs (plus JaySam) should make our rush attack solid next year.
