Oscar season always creates buzz in both positive and negative ways. Some lesser known great films get attention, while some pretty terrible films get boosted because of insider politics. If you were to pick some movies based on your own categories, what would you say?
Most Entertaining - Deadpool Most Engaging - Denial Best Action Scene - Captain America: Civil War (airport melee) Biggest Letdown (based on high expectations) - LaLa Land Biggest Surprise (based on low expectations) - Passengers 1/18/2017 4:03:06 PM |

I had to look at a list of movies that came out in 2016 just to remember which ones I saw...I'm shocked it was this many because I still feel like I'm also behind. Just want to know the best things real people think I should see before the Oscars say otherwise.
* = would recommend
Superhero/Comic/Fantasy Nerd Movies Rogue One* Capt America: Civil War* Deadpool* X Men: Apocalypse Batman v Superman Suicide Squad Doctor Strange* Star Trek Beyond* Ghostbusters Batman: The Killing Joke
Comedy/Animation Zootopia* Finding Dori The Jungle Book Zoolander 2 Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Everything Else Denial* LaLa Land Manchester by the Sea Passengers* The Magnificent Seven Now You See Me 2 War Dogs Hail, Caesar! The Lobster

Green Room for every category but biggest letdown
For that, Id have to think but off the top of my head I'll say Everybody Wants Some!!
^Beyond was super weak to me. I also loved Hail Caesar and The Lobster but I suppose I'd struggle recommending either bc they are different, esp Lobster

How old are we getting now? I would have enjoyed Deadpool when I was 17 or so. I really, really want to see Silence.
I've seen and ranked:
1. The Lobster 2. Green Room 3. The Witch 4. Everybody Wants Some 5. Moonlight
I enjoyed them all but I LOVED The Lobster. Moonlight is a little overrated to me but I already know it's a much better movie about the struggle of African Americans than Hidden Figures. 1/25/2017 10:53:03 AM |

I haven't seen Arrival yet, but it's at the top of my to-see list. So is Silence and The Witch.
Did anyone else see Denial? You all should. 1/25/2017 11:51:07 AM |

^no, I agree with that. I definitely don't think it is bad, but not as good as it's made out to be 1/25/2017 1:57:26 PM |

The Arrival and Moonlight were both great. I think having mild expectations heading into both made them standout as well.
I'll agree with the general consensus that of the Superhero movies, Deadpool, Cap 3, and Doctor Strange were really the only must-see options.
I guess it depends on your expectations, but I found Passengers to be EXACTLY what I expected. A weak plot built around a serviceable love story starting 2 beautiful people but nothing interesting outside of that.
Not mentioned so far that I'd recommend: Fences Hacksaw Ridge
Ones I saw that were OK but not must-see: 10 Cloverfield Lane Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them
Still on my list to see: Lion La La Land(though personal reviews I've heard have been bad) Manchester By the Sea The Founder 1/26/2017 9:02:36 AM |

best movie I saw by far. There were other movies that were entertaining to watch once, but this and possibly Finding Dory and Batman vs Superman are the only movies I would definitely watch again.1/26/2017 10:00:01 AM |

I enjoyed Passengers because the plot felt like a long Doctor Who or Star Trek episode, just with an unfortunately wedged-in love story. The visuals were great and I enjoyed the actors despite the lack-luster dialogue.
LaLa Land was nothing but Hollywood stroking it's own glamour and ego (which is why the Oscars love it). I was excited for the return to classic movie musicals but this was a huge letdown. As a person who loves musicals, I would have liked it better if it wasn't a musical.
I forgot to put Fantastic Beasts on my list. I loved it and would recommend it, but in my superhero/fantasy list and not as a drama.

I don't necessarily think it was best directed, best directed or best acted, I give it "most enjoyable" and these cats from BD:
Most Entertaining Most Engaging Best Action Scene Biggest Surprise (based on low expectations)
I also haven't seen many of the other "best of" candidates yet

I've seen a few more now, still working on my Oscars list.
La La Land - wasn't nearly as bad as some reviews I got, I actually enjoyed it. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Emma Stone win an Oscar for her performance, very well done.
Lion - really enjoyed it. The kid actor in it was very likeable and did a great job, but it wasn't until I realized it was based on a true story that really just made it fascinating.
Hell Or High Water - lived up to reviews. Wasn't on the same level as No Country for Old Men but it was a good story and very enjoyable.
Jackie - exactly what I expected. Felt like a huge ploy to get Portman nominated for an Oscar. It was an interesting take from a different perspective on a huge moment in history, but outside of that it was a bit of a miss. I like Portman, but no reason she should be up for any awards for this one.
Still need to watch Hidden Figures and Manchester By The Sea before the Oscars. 2/1/2017 2:15:31 PM |

Finally got around to watching The Lobster. The actors were all beyond fantastic, and I enjoyed the in-your-face awkwardness of every character.
Also recently watched Colonia (or, "The Colony") with Emma Watson. Not sure if it's a 2015 or 2016 movie but I loved it. It's based on a true story about a religious cult complex which also functioned as a political prisoner camp in Chile, and the cult leader played by Michael Nyqvist is one of the greatest movie villain portrayals I've ever seen. 2/1/2017 5:25:27 PM |

You're only as old as you want to be. Nothing wrong with enjoying witty adolescent humor.
Anyone who hasn't seen The Witch and wants to, a word of warning. It's probably not what you're expecting, and most people that I know who have seen it didn't really get "it".2/2/2017 12:39:45 PM |

I know the owner of a theater and get a bunch of free passes. Makes it more worth the risk that I won't like a movie, so I end up seeing a wide range of greats and terribles.2/9/2017 1:44:52 PM |

Saw Hidden Figures and The Founder.
Hidden Figures was well done and an enjoyable movie. Worthy of the praise it's receiving.
The Founder was like a long commercial for McDonalds met Wall Street. Keaton is solid but a very forgettable movie. 2/10/2017 8:32:49 AM |
