How could no one put Vandenberg on our all decade team?

He's my fav player of all time.

^^ This is easily the dumbest argument you've ever made. While I disagree with you a lot, I at least see where you're coming from most of the time and it's just a difference of opinion. You are way off on this one, however.

you can argue that there are better players you could put at the "SF" position - you could all TJW a SF for the sake of this and nobody's gonna argue that Wood > TJW. but i do disagree with the "that could shoot similarly" to Wood part. Wood is probably the best 3 PT shooter we've had at State...so i don't think there's many guys, especially in the last 10 years, that you would say are similar to him in terms of what they bring to the table as a shooter. there are surely players that can do way more than Wood and bring a bigger skill set (ball handling, defense, scoring off the dribble, etc)...but there aren't really any players in the last decade that could "shoot similarly" to him imo.

do you disagree that DSJ has all of the potential in the world to be successful in the NBA?

would you have preferred that I said "Highest Ceiling Team" as opposed to "All Potential Team"?

i just kinda don't get what the point of "all-potential team" is when you include guys that live up to their potential and other guys that clearly didn't. the concept of that just seems like a weird way to group players imo.

because all of these teams are hypothetical and it's a fun thought exercise?

No...but what does that mean in your argument? I wouldn't even put him on the all-State "potential" team. He led the ACC in assists and almost scored 20 points a game. If he had stayed an extra year or two, he'd maybe jump up into the low 20s in points and probably keep leading the league in assists. While he didn't "max out" his potential at NC State, he got pretty close.

Same goes for Warren. He scored 25 points a game...that's pretty fucking rare in major college basketball conference (for reference, Kennard topped out at 20 ppg this year). He had two years left at NC State...that mark wasn't going to get much higher. Sure, he was going to get better...but it's not like he would have been Lebron James amongst middle schoolers if he had stayed for a couple more years.

I'm trying to figure out where you are going with this. Nobody is going to max out their potential in college because it's just a small portion of their career. So maybe you need to realize that they only have four years at State instead of 15?

it means that those players have the highest ceiling

some of them hit it, some of them didn't

Abu is on it because he's shown flashes, but it's obvious that he'll likely not hit his ceiling

Fells is on it because he was an absolute freak athletically but never imposed his will on the court

I'm also not operating in any timeframe

I'm not sure how you could put DSJ over Cat Barber just based on their time at NC State."

Because DSJ's freshman year > Barber's junior year.

Statistically they were very similar(more APG for DSJ more PPG for Cat) and Barber's supporting cast was worse IMO. Both probably left 2 APG on the court because of teammates that couldn't catch/finish. Would call these almost a wash then give it to Cat with the bump of his contribution during his soph year too.

obviously everybody's just arguing the semantics of "potential" here but fuck it there's nothing else to talk about so.... there's an implication, especially when talking about athletes and talent levels, that "potential" generally means "unrealized potential" or "raw" or whatever. like, you wouldn't say "TJ Warren had the potential to be a great player at State" you would just say "TJ Warren was a great player at State". as it relates to sports, it's nearly universally meant for somebody that has yet to fulfill his potential

so would writing "Lebron James has the potential to be an all-time NBA great" in 2002 been wrong?

had I meant wasted potential, I'd have written wasted potential

I'm pretty sure the hangup has to do with the fact that writing that someone has potential before they realize it could be a synonym for "high ceiling", but if you write about potential in the past tense it is just generally understood as wasted or unrealized potential. Either way people understand you now, it was just a wierd way to communicate it initially.

nah, but that's not really what was said. we're talking about TJ Warren 3 years after he was already great. not before he was great.

either way, it really doesn't matter. basically ^ is right.
