is just a way to take advantage of someone else's suffering to get attention for yourself

agree or disagree?

I try not to guess on the intentions of people who actually think praying makes a difference.

If you respond in this thread, you love Jesus.
If you don't, you hate Jesus.

As much as I hate Facebook, I love to get on there for some good old fashion hatin'.

One friend (who I haven't spoken to in over 15 years) is a 39 year old single woman who constantly posts about prayers and Elevation Church shit... she posted asking for prayers for her twin sister who needs allergy shots.

I about responded, "I was about to pray for the people of Houston (which she posted earlier) until you posted about your sister. I have one prayer in me- should it be for Houston or your sister?"

you guys are missing the point a bit

praying for something is useless, but do you agree that asking for prayers for other people is just a way to get attention for yourself or not?

for example

"my cousin's family is in the path of irma, please pray for them"

is this just a post seeking attention for the person who posts it, yes or no?

Yes. Pretty much all postings on facebook are just for self-gratification.

^^I think there are probably some folks out there with genuine good intentions who believe that prayer will do these folks good.

What chaps me are those "Unspoken prayer requests." Or for that matter, vagueness in general on FB.

^^Basically someone asking you to pray for them or a family member and not saying why or what is going on.

I feel like I've unfriended or blocked anyone on facebook that would ask for prayers.

I think it's also to ask for support when you're hurting/worried.Yeah prayers are useless but knowing that are people out there that care can be calming for some people.

My northern father didn't know that us southerners say "bless your heart" for a particular reason and usually it's not to bless someone. bless his heart.

I think it depends on who it is and what's going on.

Like if someone says "my dad is going through major surgery tomorrow, if you're the praying type send one up for him"

I think that is just general concern for the well being of the person and the fact that there is nothing you can do but pray and just be supportive overall of the person.

But the people that are every day asking for prayers for one thing or another, it does seem to be a little bit like attention grabbing.
I mean it doesn't really bother me, I just scroll on past and go about my business.

My favorites are:

"If you have time, pray for me/whoever."

and

"Please say an extra prayer for Baby Ned. He woke up a'vomitin' this morning."

Babies puke and get sick a lot. It's just a weird thing to ask for a prayer for, even if asking/delivering prayers is your thing.

Agree with OP.

My biggest pet peeve is this.

1) Person makes endless status updates about upcoming vacation

2) Person goes on vacation. Proceeds to flood internet with photos.

3) Person comes back from vacation and constantly mentions how they wish they were still on vacation.

4) Person posts pictures of previous vacation and says TAKE ME BAAAAAAACK.

5) One year passes. Person posts 1 year picture and says I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S BEEN A WHOLE YEEEEEAR.

Look dawg we all been to sea world. Go rinse off and stop posting these pictures with seals

^^^I know a girl who did that about her wedding. She posted the same set of engagement pictures once a week for like a year. Leading up to her wedding she posted everything with a hashtag with her new last name. Then after she got married she posted a long post about how it didn't feel right to actually change her last name. Then a few times she'd post like feminist articles about changing last names and explain again why she didn't change hers. That was a year ago and now she posts about vacations a lot.

^^ I only post DURING my vacations or shortly after if I didn't have a chance to upload pics People who do all the steps he laid out probably never take vacations which is why they won't shut up about it and have the document the entire experience ad nauseam. We should feel sorry for these people

You're not a "southerner."

Snatching up "bless your heart" in a cunty way is just the lazy, superficial shit you choose to do...naturally.

For the record it's not so much the vacation pics that bother me. I think those are acceptable. It's specifically the subsequent take me baaaack and "I can't believe it's been a whole yeeeeear"

UPDATE: She got a new job with better hours so now for the past couple weeks she has been posting pictures from the same hiking trip she took a month ago. She releases pictures one at time like it's a tv show people are waiting for episodes of.

^^^^Nah, last time I did that there was a huge thread about the people and they found out about TWW and our mutual friend probably found out it was me and knows I'm on TWW now. I don't know for sure, but I'm definitely not going to ask someone if they know about TWW.
