I had a GTI, it broke down like every year and usually cost a ton of money--broken clutches, premature timing belt break, sunroof leak that resulted in class action lawsuit. Pretty spoiled on anything VW. Porsche seems to be well regarded in the reliability department, but my wife thinks they are douchey. Doesn't really fit other than me working for a German company

Have had a Prius for about 9 years, debating about an upgrade. Was thinking Lexus since I've never had a problem with the Prius, but after looking around people seem to have opinions against even though the reliability seems good.

Two coworkers have some Challengers, one is the not quite Demon model.

Durango looks sweet.

New:

$30k: 370z
$60k:Corvette Z51 or Camaro ZL1. I'd have to drive them both. C7 Grand Sport for a few bucks more.
$90k: probably a Viper. Last year. $90k isn't enough to buy the Porsches I'd want.

Used:

$30k: Cayman S, or maybe a Lotus Elise
$60k: 997 Turbo
$90k: 997 GT3, probably? Maaaaaaybe a Gallardo or F430? (we'll assume I could afford the maintenance if I was in the market for something like this).

The reality is that I haven't really priced much beyond about $30k, so I'm super versed in what's out there at the 60/90 price points. Where I live has boring roads, and I am looking much more into buying an airplane and a boat than I am into buying a mega-awesome car. Plus, the depreciation on cars sucks. I can't justify spending that kind of money on one until I have "fuck you money."

30k
new: chevy volt/bolt because there's nothing I'd want at this price point for anything other than semi-autonomy or being able to drive in HOV by myself
used: e39 M5, cayman S because no explanation needed

60k
new: gt350, corvette grandsport - excellent performers and competent daily drivers
used: gt-r, gen 4 viper ACR, continental gt

90k
new: dodge demon (if only anyone had one for msrp) otherwise not much, maybe the new porsche E pure electric when it comes out. the hybrid cayenne maybe? - not enough money for something great, too much for something not so great
used: 997 mk2 gt3, 991 mk1 gt3, gen 5 ACR or TA2.0, ferrari f430

you don't spend at the price points if reliability is a chief concern. you get a new appliance with a warranty. all these price points are pay to play, especially on used

The money isn't the concern as much as being stuck on the side of the road in the 110 degree heat in the Central Valley. Ie, in my experience from the past I'd never go further than 50 miles in a VW.

no brand new car is gonna leave you road side for the most part. still, if you ballin, get and uber and/or AAA and the used cars posted are all pretty stout, mostly able to handle track duty.

There's a brand new Camaro SS 1LE with manual transmission listed on eBay right now for $31.8k.

I amend my previous answer for new purchase at the $30k price point. It's that garnet red, which isn't what I'd choose otherwise, but if I needed a car right now, I'd snap that motherfucker right up.

Oops, didn't look carefully. It's a dopey V6 car. I didn't realize they offered the 1LE package on the Enterprise version.

Still, I've seen them for very upper 30s, new.

Too bad they don't have a rear bench seat. I'd rather have the extra space back there. Without that practicality, I'd probably just stick with a true sports car, with only 2 seats, and keep a daily driver.

With the introduction of the current generation, Chevy opened up the 1LE package to the V6 model.

And the Camaro V6 model is far from rental car spec these days. That's reserved for the 4 banger

Whatever. V8 or nothing in a Camaro or Mustang.

I’d rather have the 4cyl than the 6. If I’m going to drive a car that shouldn’t exist and look like the most clueless, pussy toolbag imaginable, I’d rather spend less money and get a couple more mpg.

Have you read anything, at all, about the current gen V6? It's a legit sports car man. And the engine even sounds good. I'm not a homer or anything, just putting it all out there.

Yep. I don’t give a shit how good it is, just like I don’t give a shit how good or bad the 4 cyl is. They’re not relevant, and they’re not proper for a Mustang or Camaro.

No one mentioned the Panamera, but all the Porsche love made me throw it in the mix. So starting my search tomorrow with a Panamera. Going to go down PCH listening to Ice Cube, try not to get a ticket and drive some of the Malibu roads like Tuna Canyon. Hopefully I can get it faster than 25 MPH on the highway stretch.

Going to do the same drive with the following: Panamera, 911, a few Lexus's (GS F, GS450H, IS...), MAYBE a Model S if I feel like the company will still be around in 2020, and hopefully something "real" American like a CTS-V or Challenger so I'm not being racist.

All of them will assuredly be better than my 2009 stock, base model Prius which feels fast when listening to Ice Cube on PCH. Jesus I need a new car.

You know, I have always absolutely loathed the Panamera. Partly because I sort of have a grudge against anything Porsche makes that isn't a sports car, but I guess that ship has long since sailed in a big way. Oh well, at least they haven't gone full-BMW in completely abandoning what makes them what they are.

The main thing, though, is how fucking hideous the back 1/3 of the car used to be. The entire species has been dead to me ever since my first stomach-churning sight of the ass end. They've improved it a lot, though...maybe I should take a look at a newer example with a critical eye but an open mind.

I understand what you mean by "sports car", but the Panamera truly is a 4-door 'sports car'.

The current Turbo model is just as quick around the Nurburgring as the 458 Italia, Gallardo LP570, 997 Turbo and GT3, and C6 ZR1, as well as a whole host of supercars from the 2000s and the 2010s.

By the way, do you consider the M3 or M5 to be sports cars?

^^some people don't care about numbers. If it's slush box only and over 4000 lb it's definitely not a sports car in my book.

New:

$30k: Audi A3
$60k: M2/RS3 or bare M3.
$90k: This is hard, but perhaps base 911 simply because if I am spending that much money it needs to be marque with heritage that will not depreciate like Chrysler. Owning a brand new 911 must feel good.

Used:

$30k: E92 M3
$60k: 997 Turbo, maybe NMSJ GT-R.
$90k: F355 if maintenance money is no object. Realistically, as new as possible 911TT/GT3 variation.

Shitty Pics:

The Panamera is mega nice on the interior like I expected, with flawless stitching and just feels expensive. It feels like a smooth yacht while driving so I understand TKE-Teg's comments now. Much bigger than I expected and parking around LA in tight spots was a bitch--namsayin?

Def fast and nice acceleration, best turning on winding mountain roads I've experienced, didn't have an trouble taking a 25 mph curve at 45 and I'd even say it felt like the same curve in the Prius at 25.

Still felt like a 60 year old man car. Will reconsider when I hit $10MM networth and have a country club membership.

In Raleigh tomorrow, may rent a Challenger or CTS, any other options for renting cars in Raleigh?

Latest cars I've spent the day(s) with:

Audi A8

Good pickup for a massive sedan. Would like to compare with the S7. The ride is super smooth and feels like it hugs the road. The interior was not as good as I expected. It was way less luxurious than the Panamera. Infotainment parts were better and easier to understand than the Porsche, but still kind of tragic.

Nissan GT-R

Feels like a Civic on a rocket. The first time I took off I think I shit my pants. Still feels like a Nissan on the interior, but it was laid out nicely so changing temp/radio was easy and intuitive. It would burn a lot of gas--I did half a tank it seemed like going 100 miles. Great stereo, even though the bumps on the road were able to partially drown it out @ highway speed.

Tesla Model S P100D

Performance
The acceleration is even more insane than the GT-R and made everyone giggle every time we took off, however, fast take-offs result in 2 miles lost range instantly. The ride is almost as smooth, but not quite the Audi.

Interior
The interior is better from when I originally looked at them. The seats particularly are better and the leather dash is nicer than the Audi, almost Panamera quality. Still no "oh shit" handles, but has a center console with cup holders and ample storage.

Tech
Autopilot (AP2) tried to kill us more than once. The first time when it followed a barrier into a turning lane we weren't taking almost into the back of a car at 65. Apparently, the AP2 sucks way worse for non-highway driving.

Up next:
Still need to do a Hellcat, Camaro, and Cayman.

Renting is expensive.

I don't know what I'd buy for 30k. I guess maybe a Maverick? That's only barely useful as a truck, though. In fact, faced with this exact conundrum, I put a Stealth hitch on my M3P, ordered a hitch-mount cargo rack and a hitch-mount motorcycle carrier, saved $29,000, and should be able to do most of what I'd use the Maverick for.

30k doesn't even get you a Miata with the sport suspension and Brembos, and I have no interest in a base one. You'd need $38k to get one well-spec'd.

30k will almost get you a bare-bones base Wrangler...but really, I'd only want a Rubicon, and I wouldn't spend what those cost for a Jeep...so scratch that.

Basically, there are no sports cars and no trucks available at 30k, at least not spec'd acceptably. I suppose it's commuter appliances only, and there's no way in hell I'd spend $30k for that, so just scratch this category altogether.
________________________________________________________________

I don't know what I'd buy at 60k, either. Not enough for a Rivian or a decently-spec'd F150 Lightning. Not enough for a Dark Horse with the handling package. I suppose I'd buy the new-generation Model 3 Performance and keep the extra $5k...plus score a tax credit if I'm eligible.
__________________________________________________________________

90k? Not enough for any Porsche I'd want. Cayman S is 4 cylinder turbo now, so I'd step up to the GTS 4.0, and that's over 100k.

I'd prob just buy a C8 Z51, add the competition seats, and keep the extra $10k.

[Edited on November 26, 2024 at 11:10 PM. Reason : New cars suck and prices are batshit. Maybe later I'll think through the price points for used.]
