You served me well through college ol' buddy. You won't be missed, but you'll be fondly remembered.

College? Shitttt when I was in middle school it was like the center of my social life. That 56k modem dial-up sound and clogging up your parents' phone line just so you could sit and wait for the girl you liked to get online. The little door open / door close sound it made. All the shitty username tropes. 'Twas a magical time.

^^Oh I was on there in middle school too, it's just I was already friends with everyone I talked to then. I also had a special sound that played when the girl I liked signed on so I could hear from the other room, haha.

I'm so upset that I remember my ICQ number but never was able to recover the password

it also sucks about AIM because I use it on my computer to text cell phones

does anyone know of another program I can use to text from a computer relatively easily?

I use Pidgin for it now, so even another program in Pidgin would be nice. apparently Yahoo messenger (lol Yahoo, who uses that) was taken off of Pidgin so that's not a texting option

any standalone programs for that?

Crazy how that was such a benign/common question then and would just be ultra creepy now.

true story

my primary comms with this girl i was hooking up with semi-regularly were through aim. for some unknown reason she logged all her chats to text files - seems like aim made that easy or it was even the default behavior at some point. anyway if you were on someone's computer you could read that shit without needing to know their aim credentials. her boyfriend read the logs while she was in class and then tried to kill himself. now i'm facebook friends with them both.

Chat logs were never an option using the actual AIM program AFAIK. I used deadaim and kept logs. They came in handy sometimes.

^^they were in later versions I think

I remember having chats automatically logged, assuming I didn't tell it not to

and they came up kind of in the same fashion as the chat window in a HTML file

AIM chats were logged to external files in the versions that were current from '97 until at least 2000

they were frequently sent to student conduct when one student was accusing another of shenanigans in the dorms

Yeah my aim usage really started in 2001 and continued heavily until roughly 2007 with intermittent usage until roughly 2009. During that time the official AIM program did not log chats. It's almost the entire reason I used deadaim.
