God let this happen because he loves us enough to give us free will. Also, he was ready to bring more angels to heaven.

So any conspiracy theories about multiple shooters, false-flag, decoys, etc?

I suppose this counts as one... but she is a victim herself:

The shooter escaped from a mental health facility in 2012.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/07/us/texas-shooting-church.html

The report filed by the El Paso officers says that the person who reported Mr. Kelley missing from the hospital advised them that he “suffered from mental disorders,” and that he “was attempting to carry out death threats” against “his military chain of command.” The man “was a danger to himself and others as he had already been caught sneaking firearms onto Holloman Air Force Base,” it added.

no, it means we need laws requiring information to be entered and we need to amend the domestic violence law to include equivalent UCMJ charges

NICS being broken is a feature, rather than a bug, to a lot of the nuts. Any effort to improve it will be crushed under "OMG GUN REGISTRY" hysteria. That's assuming congress makes an effort at all.

Look, once we get our mess straightened out with reporting to NICS, I'm ok if we even restrict misdemeanors.

This was only the second mass-shooting since Las Vegas (the other being NY), so maybe if they were more frequent, there would be enough political will and momentum to do something.

There have been over 30 mass-shootings since Las Vegas, but no policy change.

We gotta do better at enforcing the law and making sure felons and crazy people can't buy guns, but I really don't think more gun laws are the fix to this problem. What gun laws specifically do most of you think will help with this problem? I'm definitely on board with closing the gun show loophole, but aside from that I don't know of anything else that would help. I couldn't possibly like a President less than Trump, but I think he's right about mental health being a big part of this.
I just don't think guns the underlying problem with mass shootings. I think we could curb gun violence in other ways, such as domestic situations and gang shootings, with better gun laws and enforcement, but I can't get on board with more gun laws being the answer to mass shootings. I've got no skin in the game as I've never owned a gun, and went to a gun range once and hated it. Seems like on one side you've got too much lobbying power and clout to allow even the smallest amount of any kind of reform, and on the other side you've got a bunch of people who aren't into guns and want to demonize them as a way to poke the other side in the ribs. For the most part when I see people on FB and sites like this fighting about it, it seems like they are just more interested in proving their side is right than actually saving people's lives. If you were that passionate about saving people's lives, there's other areas you could focus that energy and do a lot more good. I've got a friend who constantly talks about eradicating guns, but he's had 3 dui's. I don't think he gets the irony in that, but drunk driving is not a not button partisan political topic that you can win facebook fights with.
Close the gun show loophole and outlaw specific types of guns are really the only 2 specific gun laws I hear about. Most of what I'm hearing is "better gun control", granted it's not a topic I've done much research on so I'm sure there are other popular suggestions I'm not aware of.
The most logical thing I've heard as far as the underlying issue causing these mass shootings was from Sebastian Junger. Depression and alienation, and the need to be heard. Mass shootings are a form of suicide. They are a way to commit suicide and have everybody in the world finally hear you. That's in the case of mass shootings like this one, not the ones where there is an ideological motivation.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-norcal-elementary-school-shooting-20171114-story.html

Quote :
"At least five people are dead following shootings at multiple locations in Tehama County, including an elementary school where at least two children were wounded.

Authorities described a chaotic scene in which a gunman appeared to pick targets at random in the rural Northern California county. They said the shootings appear to have begun as “domestic violence incident” but did not provide details.

The gunman was fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies. His name has not been released. The Tehama County Sheriff’s Department said they were dealing with at least five separate crime scenes and were trying to assess the number of casualties.

Authorities said the shooting occurred around 8 a.m. in Rancho Tehama, near Red Bluff, about 120 miles northwest of Sacramento.

“We have about 100 law enforcement personnel in Rancho Tehama right now, with multiple, multiple scenes,” Johnston said.

“I know that we have [airlifted] a number of students,” he told reporters. “I know that we have children that were attending school in a safe location at this time.”

Officials said the Rancho Tehama area remains on lockdown.

Nearby residents and business owners said they heard at least 100 gunshots.

“I thought this only happens to places like L.A. or New York,” said Jose Garcia, owner of La Fortune Convenience, told the Los Angeles Times.

Coy Ferreira, a parent at the school, told KRCR-TV that he heard a series of gunshots through a classroom window and saw one young boy shot in the foot and chest and a second student shot in the arm. Both were alert and conscious, he said.

The owner of a nearby cafe, Coffee Addiction, told The Times that she called 911 after hearing gunfire and screaming at the elementary school.

The woman, who identified herself only as Tiffany, said she heard about 100 rounds fired from what sounded like multiple guns.

The business owner said she and her husband and their four children moved to the area from Redding about seven years ago. She said that they have always felt safe.

“It’s a great community,” she said. “I am hoping it doesn’t get some kind of bad rap because of one person in one area.”

Rancho Tehama has a population of about 1,485, according to a census estimate.

The school and surrounding community were on lockdown.

“We have had an active shooter incident at Rancho Tehama Elementary this morning,” read a statement from the Corning Union Elementary School District website. “There are confirmed injuries. We are cooperating with law enforcement during this investigation but do not have specific details at this time.”

Maybe it's just the media I consume, but it seems like we are coasting down a hill of people giving less and less of a damn about teenagers being gunned down while in class. We live in a very sick culture.

I'm not sure that's true. Obviously coverage that dwells on the killer can be bad, but I talked to people this morning at work that weren't even aware ANOTHER shooting happened. Zero coverage just puts people back to sleep IMO.

I agree, hysteria isn't effective, but neither is willfully ignoring, being genuinely unaware, or just not giving a damn.

I'm a staunch defender of the 2nd amendment.

But damn, they need to do something. Sure, limiting magazine capacity or banning "assault rifles" won't prevent much, but not doing anything now just looks reckless.

So crazy how the media gets their collective D's so hard over these things. Shutting off the Olympics for hours with nonstop coverage. Interviewing students that are literally trembling with fear still trying to figure out if their friends are dead or alive. Media needs to be held accountable with the way they handle these events. It's fucking sickening.
