^That was my wedding weekend. We got lucky and it rained just in time to stop the fire from growing.

This one is already the 5th largest fire in California history, and still growing.

I'm not sure who took the originals, but I think they are from a local photojournalist.

My wife and I are safe, she has family in Fremont so we took it as an excuse to visit. But we're worried for people who aren't smart enough to get out. Every news and radio broadcast is saying to wear masks outside because the air is toxic from all the smoke and ash, and masks are being given out for free at every grocery store and pharmacy, but we saw way too many people without them on our way out of town.

My wife and I were in the bay area for a few days, then came back when the air quality had improved. But then late last night was a terrible gust of wind that spread the fire and now the city looks like the set of a Roland Emmerich film.

the firefighters have done an amazing job protecting life and property. fire consumed everything for miles around the town of ojai but they saved the town.

And now...it's raining. A lot. Too much. The hills are unstable from the drought and the fire, so now there are landslides and mudslides all over the place. In fact the rain has already taken more lives today than the fire had the entire time it was burning. I guess we were more prepared for the fire. But damn, we can't catch a break.

The fire last month was the biggest in California history: 2 deaths (including 1 firefighter).

Floods and mudslides since last night: 13 deaths.

A man I know was hanging on to a tree branch for four hours until the rescue team could get to him. His wife is still missing. Things are BAD.

I don't see why so many people had to die. For some reason, people are afraid of fire but think they can ride it out if its water and mud. We saw this storm coming days in advance and everyone near burn areas or hills should have evacuated for a few days. Many places even had mandatory evacuations.

The disaster awareness/preparedness/literacy in this country is terrible.

Just because you don't know something, doesn't make the thing you don't know a troll. The mudslides are connected to the fire. Everyone in the area knows a torched hill turns to mud the first good rain. The first good rain was predicted to be this 4+ inch event.

We were actually hoping the Matilija dam would break because they've been trying to find funding to demolish it for decades. Water overtopped it but it didn't fail. Crazy because the reservoir was empty 15 months ago.

its pretty easy if you live away from the hills and in a quake proof building. my building can withstand a 9.0.

not having to deal with bitter cold ever is worth a few strange air quality days per year. in nc you guys get like 5 bread amd milk days and 30 days where its too cold or hot to play outside every year.

plus the whole state is suburban full of boring neighborhoods except like glenwood south, chapel hill, and Asheville

^^Rarely do the natural disasters affect the city. We're surrounded by a mountainous national forest, and only once every decade or so does a fire come over the peaks. I think people in south Florida are much crazier, because you know you're going to get multiple hurricanes every year. This was just a freak year for us.

I'm not staying longer than 2 more years anyway, just waiting on my wife to finish her PhD then we'll go somewhere we can afford to own property and raise a family...which is definitely not here.

I've been in Cali for 7 years now and the air quality just sucked this year, the rest have been ok. There are areas you never see anything other than a small earthquake. As long as you don't drive on the highway in the rain youre generally good. Safe on storms and lightning!

I stayed out on the beach yesterday, in the middle of January. Worth the small earthquake risk.

The news makes it seem like the whole state is fucked when in reality it's usually a small area.

^ I keep seeing claims that controlled burns stopped in recent years for some reason. Haven't dug in enough detail to know.

This Woolsey fire was nuts, in that it burned Malibu and Point Dume close to the beach. For some reason I thought the combination of beach and mountain would be a natural defense.
