Don't remember it either, but schools have been locked up and shut down for 2 weeks. It's gonna be cold in there this morning and we can't tell the kids to keep their jackets on now can we.

No precipitation means no possibility of any frozen water on any surfaces

Yeah cold delays are more about not having kids wait on the bus in cold as balls temperatures. Not every kid can be privileged enough to have their parents drive them to school.

Hell, when I rode the bus I had to walk a good way from my house because they would only make one stop in the neighborhood, so you couldn't even wait on the bus inside.

The delay this morning was apparently about getting the buses started in the cold after having them sit all break.

^ here you go: http://www.wral.com/-measurable-snow-possible-midweek-amid-brutal-temps-/17225833/

I've seen comments about why someone didn't go out and crank them up over the weekend but to be frank no one would volunteer to go do that

probably a lot easier administratively to delay school than to force people to work at a time that wasn't accounted for in the staffing.

Also, diesel turns to gel below 15 degrees F, so warming up hundreds of buses in those temps is no small task.

that said, up here in Richmond it was 6F this morning, and there was no delay. Perhaps we're just far enough north where they have to invest in anti-gelling measures.

The school system mechanics should treat the fuel when it's cold to combat this.

^ Problem is with a 2 week break and no reason to suspect it would be this cold then there is no reason to use those resources. As stated above it is much more cost effective to just issue the 2 hour delay than free up resources (if they even exist) to do it beforehand.

^^i don't think it costs much to free up salaried mechanics. And they should be treating the fuel in the winter anyways (as in that should be a budgeted item every year).

I suspect they are more likely to be state employees than salaried mechanics. Fine point if they are salaried as any argument I have then is kinda moot.

Local media reported schools also wanted to make sure heating systems were functional after the break.

There were A LOT of schools without heat today. I don't know what the issue was, but I'm surprised they left the kids in school. A friend of mine works at Apex and her classroom was 48 degrees all day.

We have "custodians" on duty but they don't really do anything other than call it in to central office.

I went to school in New York, we only got called off school for windchill, not snow amounts. Except for the blizzard of '93, that shut shit down.
