I came to know that was a thing just a few things ago.

And you know, I was like, idiots who bite/chew them deserve the burns they get in their mouths and plumbing.

I bet Tide acts all dismayed about this but is really reveling in the increased sales.

I've got the feeling this all got started with one of those joke / fake facebook meme posts, similar to those that offer "advice" on how to prepare a vehicle for winter, with the advice being what one should not do or just plain false information (boiling water on frozen windshield, drain oil so it doesn't freeze, winter headlight fluid, etc)..

So I had middle schoolers try to explain this to me yesterday. They said "You don't actually eat the tide pod, you just bite it and spit it out"

I was like...oh that's better! you just swallow a little bit, not the whole thing.

I honestly get joy out of telling the students "If you eat one, and you go to the hospital, I will come and visit you in the hospital, and I will call you stupid."

So why exactly has this become a thing?

I keep hearing it compared to the gallon challenge and the cinnamon challenge...

Also, whats in a tide pod - exactly how toxic are these things?

^toxic enough to kill little kids, would probably just make an adult painfully poop bubbles for 72 hours

What's in it? It is like any other laundry detergent. The dose makes the poison, so for little kids it can be fatal (and has been). For teens, it won't kill them, though for anybody who happens to be allergic to any of the ingredients, it can lead to anaphylactic shock.

Compilation of teens doing it plus scientifically explains why eating detergent is harmful:
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/tide-pod-challenge-health-risk-advert-dangers-consume-swallow-eat-a8166666.html

This guy is making edible Tide Pod Pizzas to stop idiots from killing themselves:
https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/j5v4m4/we-tried-tide-pod-pizza

Meme's origin:
http://nymag.com/selectall/2017/12/why-are-people-joking-about-eating-tide-pods-on-twitter.html

Someone vaped one:
http://www.kens5.com/news/local/sosomeone-vaped-a-tide-pod/508970612

Many teens of today have weirdly and wrongly wired brains caused by a toxic mix of lack of parenting and social media:
https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/mvkqz3/teenagers-get-pleasure-from-social-media-likes-vgtrn

ZERO sympathy other than for those who genuinely mistaken them for candy.

I don't remember what the fire challenge was. But I do remember the ice bucket challenge, and would categorize it much differently than eating laundry detergent.
