I understand that there is a lot of fake news out there but its not the tech companies job to prevent people from seeing things that they deem are fake. http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/21/technology/facebook-youtube-parkland-conspiracy-theories/index.html
Quote : | "Tech's biggest companies are spreading conspiracy theories. Again." |
Tech companies aren't spreading the conspiracy theories, people are. Its an important distinction to make or else these fake news stories are only setting the stage for us to turn over the authority of what information can be shared online.
Quote : | ""This video should never have appeared in Trending," a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement provided to CNN, which concluded with a familiar line: "We are working to improve our systems moving forward."" |
Thats not what "trending" means. If a ton of people are talking about/ watching something, its trending. You don't get to say its not trending because you don't think its true. Thats censorship.

The First Amendment does not coerce a private entity to provide a platform for others to speak. Indeed, such coercion would be a violation of the First Amendment. 2/21/2018 11:21:49 PM |

^^Thats an interesting take considering most "public" speech now takes place online. Do you believe that no one has the right to say what they want to say online because, at the end of the day, some private entity is providing that platform? All the way down to the isp.
Is speech limited to literal words coming out of your physical mouth?
Quote : | ". In the other, the court declared social media to be the vast public forum for nearly all expressions" |
https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-06-19/supreme-court-doesn-t-care-what-you-say-on-the-internet They also say the companies get to regulate it but this topic came up not because of that, but because the media is calling out tech companies for their lack of regulation.
Depending on how I interpret your post, I could even get a third take. I'm not saying CNN shouldn't be able to say, "tech companies are spreading lies" if thats what you were insinuating but I'm simply saying if social pressure starts to shun the platform, then it will force certain types of speech that are vastly unpopular to be permanently filtered out. This seems to be exactly the type of speech the first amendment was designed to protect.2/22/2018 12:18:09 AM |

This isn't censorship, this is a technological failure.
YouTube's intent of that feature isn't to provide a democratic snapshot of viewership, it's to bring interesting content to its users.
The fact that their existing algorithm is prone to manipulation is a failure of their feature and design intent.
Arguing this is suppressing free speech is like arguing News 14 suppressed free speech by changing their approval process for organization closings, because TWWers operated within the bounds of the system to manipulate it. 2/22/2018 12:20:03 AM |

So that is something different. Are they saying the videos were designed to automatically be promoted by the algotrhythm
or
There was a fake video that a lot of people watched and it was listed as "trending".
The second is what I was thinking. Its like when everyone tweeted that usher died but usher didn't die. Should twitter not let "usher" become a "trending" topic.
If everyone is watching a video, I want to see it, even if its fake. This google part makes me think its the second one.

They are saying google shouldn't finish searches with what people usually type in if what people usually type in is offensive.

These are not things that some russian bot inserted into google code to come up. These are the actual things most commonly typed in.2/22/2018 1:26:20 AM |

This is an interesting thread and with the link on the way it is going to get even moreso.

That said, it’s obvious algorithms are taken advantage of to decide what “trends” and what doesn’t. Those loopholes should absolutely be closed and that is not censorship.

I can’t decide if the pedo allegations are being used because they’re the most harmful generic crime they could think of, some kind of weird group think phase (one accusations flies and suddenly they just use it for everyone), or if there’s some weird carcosa-the yellow king shit they are projecting on everyone else.
