What the hell is Khedira doing? He’s playing as CDM but keeps gunning forward leaving half the field open. He is an oaf technically so far too.

Draxler pretty poor too and that’s strong from me who loves him.

[Edited on June 17, 2018 at 11:55 AM. Reason : Gundogan and Reus for Kbedira and Draxler obvious moves. Have Ozil drift and Muller sit behind Timo]

The lack of creativity and movement from Germany is surprising. It felt like everything was getting funneled to Kimmich and Mexico defended him well. I agree with you about Khedira too. He's been a shadow of himself for two seasons. Germany also didn't adjust to the game initially and spent the first 20 mins bitching at the ref every time they got tackled.

[Edited on June 17, 2018 at 12:42 PM. Reason : Would be nice to have Sane on the bench right about now wouldn't it Low]

Mexico was perfectly happy to let Germany posses the ball over 60% of the game, and let them press insanely high up the pitch and catch them on the counter. Most of Mexico's breakaway counters started within their own half of the field, which took away Neuer's ability to play sweeper/keeper. If Mexico was halfway decent on the break, they could have won this game 3-0 easily and we'd all be questioning whether or not Joachim Low should have been allowed to manage this cycle.

Chicharito was absolute garbage this game, though, and Mexico needs to not take so many touches in the box. Their finishing in the attacking third was dogshit, quite honestly. They blew quite a few open attacks by trying to either take the extra touch in the box or flat-out miss the open man flanking on the right, and it allowed for Germany to hang around longer than they should have.

How is that different from how Mexico have played for the last 20 years?

From the part you quoted? Not much. Mexico has never been brilliant in front of goal and they've relied on the counter-attack for decades. No argument there. The main difference is how far up they invited Kroos/Khedira to play up the pitch and how often they caught Germany at a 2v3 or 2v4 disadvantages on the break with Hummels and Boateng playing on their backfoot with open space on the wings.

It was a good win, but I didn't see anything in that game that suggested a deep run by Mexico this tourny.

I was pulling for the tie. Nothing against England, but we could have got some Grade-A social media freakouts and overreactions.

Poland just (NC State) shit on by the ref. Allowed a Senegal player back onto the field during a break and led immediately to a goal. Never seen that happen before, really poor judgement by the ref there

Japan and Senegal winning today is great news for England. Let's get the weakest two teams from that group on paper to play the first knockout stage. Whoever they get if both of those teams get through they should be favored.

Glad Brazil got one, I was sick of seeing CR guys play dead to kill time.

Also enjoyed Neymar yelling "don't touch me" at the ref multiple times, immediately followed by the ref touching him.

That 2nd half was intense. Glad Brazil pulled it out as well. They're fun to watch...would be disappointing not to see them advance.

Interestingly, they cleaned the stadium with their own trash bags:

Quote :
"World Cup: Japan fans impress by cleaning up stadium

By Andreas Illmer
BBC News
20 June 2018

After a heated World Cup match, the stands are usually left with food waste, cups and wrappers scattered in the heat of the moment.

Japanese fans certainly had reason to go wild on Tuesday night. Their side won their opening game, beating Colombia 2-1, and securing the team's first victory against a South American side.

But after the team swept Colombia off the pitch, Japanese fans also did their share of sweeping: meticulously cleaning up their rows and seats in the stadium.

Equipped with large rubbish bags they brought along, the fans marched through the rows picking up rubbish, to leave the place just as neat as they had found it.

And not for the first time - supporters of the "Samurai Blue" have never failed to stick to their good manners.

"It's not just part of the football culture but part of Japanese culture," Japan-based football journalist Scott McIntyre told the BBC. He is in Russia following the team and was not at all surprised by the somewhat different nature of Samurai Blue fans.

"You often hear people say that football is a reflection of culture. An important aspect of Japanese society is making sure that everything is absolutely clean and that's the case in all sporting events and certainly also in football."

Senegal fans have in fact been seen doing the same at this year's World Cup - but it's the Japanese who pioneered it and are now famous for it.

It is something that comes as a surprise to many foreigners attending matches in Japan.

"They might leave a bottle or some kind of food package on the ground and then it's often the case that people get tapped on the shoulder by Japanese people indicating they should clean up or take it home but can't leave it there," Mr McIntyre says.

It's a habit drilled into Japanese people from early childhood.

"Cleaning up after football matches is an extension of basic behaviours that are taught in school, where the children clean their school classrooms and hallways," explains Scott North, professor of sociology at Osaka University.

"With constant reminders throughout childhood, these behaviours become habits for much of the population."

What do fans make of the fact their post-match cleaning spree becomes a regular hit on social media? If anything, they're proud.

"In addition to their heightened consciousness of the need to be clean and to recycle, cleaning up at events like the World Cup is a way Japanese fans demonstrate pride in their way of life and share it with the rest of us," explains Prof North.

"What better place to make a statement about the need to care responsibly for the planet than the World Cup?" he adds.

It doesn't mean that there is any more or less passion, insists Mr McIntyre. It's simply that passion doesn't slip into neglect of basic rules of behaviour let alone violence.

"I know it may sound bland and boring, but this is the reality of a country that's built on respect and politeness," he laughs. "And this simply extends to doing respectful things in football."

"I think it's a wonderful thing that the World Cup brings so many nations and people together and get to learn and exchange these kinds of things. That's the beauty of football.""

10am games tomorrow only one worth watching is Uruguay and Russia, both of these teams probably lose their round of 16 game unless somehow Iran beats Portugal.

2pm game, the one to watch is Portugal vs Iran. An Iran win and they’re in the knockout round. Spain is playing already eliminated Morocco.

So are we going to have a south park style, play to lose, game today between England and Belgium? If they draw it comes down to yellow/red cards so we could see intentional penalties late in the game.

I wasn't going to go out of my way to watch England/Belgium later, but I feel like the unintentional comedy of both teams trying to lose could be entertaining.

^ I hope we don't. It is imperative for England to keep the momentum going. This is a young team and they are actually playing as 11 teammates for once. Win the goddamn group and face the tough opponents. Can't go anywhere till you can beat the best anyway. There is also this:

Quote :
"Gary Lineker: England haven’t won a knockout game at a major tournament for 12 years and we’re discussing playing to lose to avoid a more difficult quarter final. Do me a favour."

So, does England own goal itself and does Belgium answer with its own? And go back and forth scoring on yourself? That'd be cool...
