I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this

Anyway, the latest by Alex Garland (Ex Machina) based (semi) on the best selling novel

I loved it. The imagery was gorgeous and terrifying. It was like a cross bw Arrival, 2001 and Alien.

Spoilers but

I think its the doppelganger Oscar Isaac and the "real" Portman, but a permanently "refracted" Portman.

One thing I didn't really get was the psychiatrist's face in the lighthouse. Was that a mimic completing transformation or something else?

This movie was a lot scarier than I thought it would be.

**Spoilers**

I also agree that it's the doppelganger dude and real chick but she doesn't really care/embraces the fact she has him, or some form of him, back.

I don't know why they had to throw in the cheating thing, though - that was totally irrelevant to the plot.

But she had the tattoo at the end, don’t think it was the original Portman

It was alright. My expectations were super high from hearing about it for months and in light of that, it was kind of disappointing. I liked Arrival a lot better.

I'm not a biologist but obviously every time Portman talked as a scientist it was mega cringe.

i know i mentioned Arrival in the first post, but that was a weird sentence. Arrival had some slight plot similarities but other than that not sure why it has to be one vs the other? They didnt share directors, writers, actors or anything.

I don't watch too many films, but these are the last two "intellectual" sci-fi movies I've seen and it's easy to make the comparison between them.

Both are about woman scientists who have suffered a major loss reacting to an alien invasion by venturing into the heart of it, possibly to their own deaths, and both have plenty of flashbacks woven in. Seems pretty similar to me.

So having made that comparison, Annihilation didn't feel that satisfying to me and I wasn't particularly taken in by the visuals everyone else is raving about. The rainbow aesthetic thing was kind of meh for me, definitely unique though.
