Data is kinda expensive when I'm using my hotspot, so I tend to save data by blocking images in Chrome (Do not show any images). But, quite often I absolutely need exactly one image loaded. Too bad I can't right click on such an image and say "load image". Anyone know of such an extension? Hate to think we need to write one, seems fairly obvious to me this would be a good idea.

I can't solve your problem, but I am curious why data is so expensive for you

[Edited on August 27, 2018 at 4:54 AM. Reason : I totally thought this was.going to be a backup thread btw]

Cellular hotspots is how I roll when I'm on the road, which is much of the time.

we have "unlimited" business lines with verizon but after 10GB they slow your data unless you buy more

sounds like he's not even hitting 10 GB with his conservative usage.

This feels... drastic

Maybe you should give up and invest in some long range wifi gear and war driving

That is certainly not worth the effort? I have my hotspot wired into my car and just leave it on. Where ever I am, the WiFi will usually reach the parking lot just fine. I don't even bother with WiFi at restaurants and things, because it is usually slower, often nearly unusable, blocks VPN access, or times out at random intervals. Some facilities I visit they don't even have WiFi, they wired Ethernet to everyone's desk; being a visitor, I don't have a desk.

So yea, I use my hotspot a lot. It works great, until it ran out last month, so now I'm turning images off to try and prevent that from happening ever again, only it seems needlessly difficult (open second browser, paste image link, rinse-repeat).

With so many living with marginal internet connections (over-extended DSL in a deep-rural local without any cell service, for example) I would have thought this would be a solved problem...sure seems not to be, however.

you sound like a paranoid grandpa

also, i highly doubt that chrome images are the primary culprit of your data issue. do you stream a decent amount of audio and/or video?

nope, not video. I do download a podcast on occasion, otherwise no audio. But I leave my data tracker running, so I can usually spot when things are sucking data.

set your wifi on your laptop to a

metered connection
so it doesn't try to preload updates while you're mobile.

you also might consider setting up a proxy in your car, via rpi or something. use squid and block images/video/ads/etc.

seems Tunable Image block is doing the best job. It uses image size to only download the small ones. I like it

So still no answer on why you don't have an unlimited data plan on your cell phone to tether off of?

Because I was unaware anyone offered unlimited tethering on cell phone plans. Most people cap tethering at 10GB or so. My phone is not rooted, so any old unlimited plan wouldn't do. Since I do most of my data use on my laptop, my cell phone plan is with Tello and rather Spartan.

with our verizon unlimited business accounts we get 10GB tethering but over 20GB (22?) if using a hot spot

[Edited on September 5, 2018 at 9:44 AM. Reason : i just tether and pay for extra data when i need it, which isn't typical but occasionally]
