So we had the file a claim recently and are ending up getting new floors on top of some other repairs. The insurance company said they'd be willing to pay for food and other costs since I won't have a kitchen for two weeks, but didn't really expand on that. Any idea what i can reasonably claim for 3 people for 12 days? 10/14/2018 4:51:00 PM |

We had our floors redone because the dishwasher leaked and destroyed parts of the tile flooring. Long story short, the home owners insurance dropped us because the cost was about $5000. But the flooring only took two days and that was the entire floor being replaced. When we went with another company, the rates were higher, so my advice would be don't claim two weeks of food. That does not sound reasonable, even if they offer. 10/15/2018 12:24:49 AM |

I think it is also highly dependent on your insurance company. There have been two people on my street who had to have their floors redone either because of a dishwasher leak or clothes washer leak. In both instances, their insurance company provided a week's worth of hotel stay, but I don't think the people tried to claim food.
As far as being dropped, I don't know what the criteria is, but I've had two full-roof claims in 4 years, probably totaling around 25k, and they haven't dropped me. I'm not sure if water damage claims are different though. They're not considered acts of God I guess.
I would be on the safe side and pay for food out of pocket. 10/15/2018 9:51:38 AM |

Metlife. My rate went up after the first roof of course, but not to something that I would call egregious. We're waiting on the increase from the second roof - the damage to the second set of shingles happened right after the first rate increase was going to roll off.
I have been extremely happy with Metlife. Both times the adjusters came out, looked at the roof, and gave me no flak whatsoever. For the second roof, I told the adjuster that I didn't want another roof, as I was very happy with the first one, and that only if he absolutely thought I needed a new one would I get it replaced. I guess the hail damage was bad enough to warrant it. The first roof was a no-brainer. A straight-line wind came down and removed 10x10 sections of shingles.
And our deductible is only $500. I highly recommend Metlife.
But we're walking on pins and needles now because I know one more claim, no matter what it is, will probably get us dropped. They haven't told us this, but I don't see how I could have another claim and not get dropped.

Well they offered me a hotel, but with a 12 month old, it was just easier to 'rough it' upstairs. They told me they'd cover any food outside of normal expenses, but didn't give me ant guidance on prices 10/15/2018 12:17:57 PM |
