Too many fucking turnovers. Just like the Wake game and UNC game, we can’t get over the hump. Too many bad shots and turnovers once we tied the game. This team has loads of fight and energy and Bryce is really coming on lately. But we desperately need Markell. We also need to figure out how to get to the line. This isn’t a comment about officiating - we are an aggressive, fouling team. It’s just part of how we play. So we will probably foul more than the opponent most games. But we really need to be able to get to the rim and draw fouls - maybe having Markell back can help them. But it’s pretty disheartening to shoot 7 FTs in a game and never even get into the bonus in the 2nd half. Part of it is settling for jumpers, obviously. But it would be nice to have a guy who could drive and draw a foul when the offense stagnants.

I don’t want to sound like a homer but this free throw disparity is bull shit. It’s not like we’ve only been chucking up threes we’ve been driving a lot. The Devon Daniels turnover after we got a stop down by one was a killer. Ugh another game where we fight hard and are in it. Can’t fault the effort can’t hate the team still better than Lowe/Gottfried

I could be wrong but haven't we been outshot at the FT line in all six games? The disparity isn't even close. 23 fouls to 12 in this one.

One thing I have come to realize over the last few games...we aren’t really that talented. Funderburk has a ton of potential, Markell is great, and Bryce looks like he’s really coming into his own. But we aren’t winning many games by simply being more talented than the opponent. Our defense, tempo, depth, energy and hustle can go a long ways. And those things can help us win lots of games. But this roster still lacks skill and talent at some spots and it’s especially evident with Markell out. Walker isn’t really an ACC caliber player. Harris has a ways to go. Daniels is just doing too much. Hellems is a freshman that isn’t adjusting well to ACC play yet. Even a really good player like Dorn isn’t a super talented guy. This roster plays super hard, hustles, and does a lotta things past State teams didn’t do. So I am excited to see some of these young guys improve and the talent level increase while maintaining the hustle and energy. But we aren’t totally there yet.

And to be clear, I’m not saying we’re trotting out a D2 roster or anything. Our roster is fine. But this isn’t a roster that can cruise on talent alone

Yeah, the roster was put together with the idea that we'd out-math teams by creating extra possessions and making more 3s (both by limiting the other team's takes and guarding it)

Unfortunately, Keatts decided to recruits a bunch of guys who can't hold onto the ball

I'll go ahead and call out the elephant in the room this year - what the fuck happened to Dorn??

Dude looked like a potential draft pick if he had another year of growth as the focal point of the offense. Now he is just a middling guy on a slightly above average ACC team.

I don’t think Dorn was ever gonna be a draft pick. As tower said in another thread, he’s a 6’5” PF. He’s not a good enough ball handler or consistent enough shooter to be a guard and he’s too small to play any other position in the NBA imo.

But he’s still a good college player. I don’t think he thrives as the focal point of the offense, that doesn’t seem to be his strength. But he’s generally good at taking what the D gives him. And for somebody his size, he’s good on the boards and that is another way for him to score.

Daniels is an off player. Will get hot for a few minutes and make some great plays. Then he just goes crazy for a few minutes and racks up some wtf turnovers. It was fitting that the play that was the final nail in the coffin was Beverly turning it over on a foul. The two things that killed us, turnovers and fouls, all wrapped up in one play.

Yeah, Dorn was never gonna be an NBA draft pick. He's the size of a shooting guard but he has an insanely flat shot that leads to poor shooting percentages on anything not at the rim (just look at his terrible free throw shooting.) He's great at getting to the rim in college, but there's about 0 chance that would be the case in the NBA with no threat of an outside shot.

23 turnover a game is a turnover in every 2 minutes or less.
We need to bench daniels asap and start Markell asap. Markell is the only player with closer ability.
Beverly is not someone you want to give the ball to drive to basket in final minute in close game.
Alot of our attempted 3s were forced 1on 1 shots and luckyly we had many of them go in and that kept us in game. If those didnt drop it would have been similar to 1st half of wake game.
Last night’s loss was just as embarrassing as wake game.

I basically agree with this but we still don't seem to be recruiting guys that are built for a 3-and-D gameplan. I don't know how we get there in the next few years. Who knows if Lecque will ever set foot on campus?

the thing that was so frustrating about freeman is he did a lot of dumb things he didnt have to. the mistakes were correctable

when I watch daniels, I don't see a world where he doesn't get the ball poked out of his hands once a game and he doesnt put his head down and drive wildly to the basket at least twice a game. its who he is, not correctable

I think the turnovers can be correctable. IMHO, it's just a combination of everyone trying to shoulder the load, or some people doing more than they should, from the loss of Markell AND the improvement on D for Louisville since the beginning of the year.

However, the fouls/FT thing is still baffling. I get State is aggressive on D, hence more fouls. But where is it for the opponents? Is State not being aggressive enough driving/getting into the paint? State had just 7 attempts from TWO people (Dorn & Daniels). Neither of the post players had any attempts---something is wrong with that.

1. Raycom is trash
2. Preventable turnovers are killing us
3. Too much disparity on fouls

I think we're just playing way too fast and constantly trying to force shit when we could just reset and take a higher percentage shot (or even pass for that matter). I get that we have a fast system, but these guys are trying to play like they've been together four years when really they're totally out of sync.

On a more positive note, it looks like Walker and Funderburk are learning to not get in foul trouble so early. We also have a lot of guys that can step up if others get cold, which should play to our advantage when Markell is back. We're getting a ton of rebounds, too, we just have to know when a gift is a gift and convert it rather than give it right back.

Right now they're leaderless and you've got 2s and 3s trying to play point guard, when really only Braxton is a passable in that position (better as a 2). Daniels is improving but still gets tunnel vision and goes to play hero ball too much.

This may not be an ACC #4 seed or get a high seed in the NCAAT but come tourney time, I think we'll be (and already are) a very dangerous team, just not in the advantageous seeding position we'd hoped for.
