Dems are getting toasted via video.

Especially when they stand and clap.

And then when they sit there and don’t react,
coldly...

...indifferent to the American Way,..

..in the close-ups.

I always though the standing and clapping was so ridiculous. But tonight I got to see the us Congress chanting usa usa! On the floor of the house. We really have fallen far.

I didn't watch it because I didn't have enough liquor in the house to make it through five minutes of Trump-speak, let alone the rest. But I did glance at the coverage and have to admit, I love this gem:

Quote :
"If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation."

Whoever wordsmithed that one should be tried at the Hague for crimes against speechwriting.

Am I interpreting that correctly and he's threatening to grind to country to a halt for his own personal crimes?

I think it's more accusatory than threatening - "You guys! All these investigations are distracting us from doing stuff! Also they'll break the economy, somehow!"

But even more than that, it's just very, very stupid on every conceptual, rhetorical, and linguistic level.

NPR's fact-checking is on point (no pun intended). https://www.npr.org/2019/02/05/690345256/fact-check-trumps-state-of-the-union-address

Trump:
Quote :
"Together we can break decades of political stalemate. We can bridge all divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions, and unlock the extraordinary promise of America’s future. The decision is ours to make. We must choose between greatness or gridlock, results or resistance, vision or vengeance, incredible progress or pointless destruction."

NPR:
Quote :
"This language is strikingly similar to what President Trump said on election night 2016, when he said it was "time for America to bind the wounds of division" and "come together as one united people.” Of course, America didn't come together, and more than two years later, the president is still reading lines from a teleprompter about healing those wounds. Less than a week ago, Trump said, "The Democrats are doing a tremendous disservice to our country" and "should be ashamed of themselves." And mere hours before his address he taunted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., about election losses Democratic senators experienced in the midterms."

This was Trump's attempt at owning the libs Schumer:

Quote :
"I see Schumer is already criticizing my State of the Union speech, even though he hasn’t seen it yet. He’s just upset that he didn’t win the Senate, after spending a fortune, like he thought he would. Too bad we weren’t given more credit for the Senate win by the media!"

Do you think anyone tried reminding Trump that in this last midterm Democrats won 22 senate seats and the Republicans only 11, and the Democrats won 59.3% of all votes cast for senators?

Next year I'm taking the day after the SOTU off work and I'll be playing a drinking game. Shot every time someone gets caught rolling their eyes.

Can you have an ambulance on standby? Asking for a friend.

I am wondering why he had no problem praising WWII vets for defeating the Nazis in Germany but couldn't offer a meaningful response when they marched in the streets of Charlottesville.

Stephen Miller was seen uploading the SOTU speech to the teleprompter as Trump was walking to the dais.
