Brand new gaming system announced today.
No consoles, storage limits or updates, only a remote.
This seems like such a no brainer, with Netflix like capabilities for video games. Curious what titles they get, etc. but I like the idea so far. Thoughts?

I use GeForce Now on a shield and haven't had any latency issues (although I'm not playing competitive shooters on it) 3/20/2019 9:03:14 AM |

Until game pricing is announced it's a little early to say it's like netflix for video games. Much more likely IMO that it's more like Movies Anywhere for games where you still have to buy the game for full price, you just don't have to download it.
An equivalent to Netflix for video games will more likely be the upcoming Microsoft xCloud (a service that will be very similar to this and will almost certainly be announced at e3 this year) + Gamepass which is already out. 3/20/2019 9:13:43 AM |

I'll believe it works as well as they claim after it's been out for 3 months. 3/20/2019 2:16:59 PM |

^ This.
If they have a game pass subscription type deal that'd be one thing. But I'm not shelling out $60 for a game that I wouldn't technically own. Even with digital purchases now the game is on your box, I'd feel like I was paying full game price for something they're just letting me play until they decide to no longer support it, or whatnot. 3/25/2019 4:24:27 PM |

I'd bet the majority of people never resell their games 3/25/2019 4:51:47 PM |

I assume it's a streaming subscription game service which supports every game/update on the Google server. Anything else where you buy/resell individual games wouldn't make much sense as it already exists.
Seems like that old gamefly idea but streaming on a obrien that can handle it. (Like netflix) 3/25/2019 6:26:26 PM |

A key difference with stadia vs other game streaming platforms is stadia requires games to be modified/compiled for the stadia platform.
Where OnLive/PlayStation now mostly does it’s magic on the driver level to capture frames.
This lets them implements certain tricks to compensate for latency they couldn’t otherwise do. 3/25/2019 7:00:11 PM |

I don't see how Google could make an affordable streaming subscription service that supports every game. IMO you're still going to pay $50+ for any new game, only you're not going to actually own it.3/25/2019 8:51:53 PM |

platform runs on a custom OS on custom hardware. frames are captured via vulkan, which means the game also needs to support vulkan. although google has a LOT of money to throw at the platform and content for it, I don't see there being a lot of games at launch or any time soon. I need to see a viable business model for this be worthwhile. the technical portion of the problem has been solved for a long time, it's the business model that no one has cracked yet. 3/27/2019 7:04:25 PM |
